i guess the n-word is our closest equivalent. in some close groups of friends (or in some shitty urban communities) it's ok, without the r at the end. even for pasty whites. but it definitely has the broadest swatch of 'stay the fuck away from this word' of any i can think of. for most people it is unsayable.

I'm about as willing as one gets with offensive jokes, but shit son, that is one word I don't touch. Too much meaning behind it, even if the person I'm speaking to knows I'm joking.

you're also a young professional in northern virginia lol

I grew up in rural New York.

    the plot thickens!

i've p much spent all my time in america in very shitty neighborhoods in large cities with large black populations

NoVA has pretty decent racial diversity. Upstate New York doesn't, my hometown was almost entirely white when I was a kid (that's changing now), but it was also full of racist rednecks.

One of the big wtf moments of my life was when my cousin got knocked up, and my aunt was more offended by the fact that the father was black than the fact that my cousin was 14.

I never noticed before the part near the end where he says "This racism is killing me inside." If I recall correctly, that's the reason he ended the show.

I had heard it was because he hated his typical audience. He was trying to make a point about racism through his comedy, but that point was completely missed and he got tired of people shouting "I'm Rick James, bitch!" everywhere he went.

I thought it was because of the racial stereotype fairies (which people say they've seen but somehow I missed it) and there was a White cast member who he felt was laughing at instead of with him.

That and the audience. Something about him telling them off for playing into the corporation's hands or something.

Congress controls the money. What happened was, Obama said "Gitmo is closed. This shit is awful and it's done." But then there were delays because we had to do something with the prisoners but no state wanted to volunteer to host a bunch of suspected terrorists (let's face it, human rights and due process violations or not, there are a lot of pretty awful people in Gitmo). And then when Congress wrote the next defense budget they specifically said zero money can go to the closing of Gitmo. Obama's power as the executive leader is to execute Congressional legislation, and executive orders are bound by that legislation. I think that, theoretically, if Gitmo could be closed for free, it could happen. But since even an hour of a single private's time costs money in wages, that ain't gonna happen.

i am going to a convention about FOSS next weekend. i guess that makes me a nerd. also the thing where i make donkey kong dress up like, well, donkey kong. every time we... you know.

i think there needs to be a specific word for like, fandom people. like, people who are super into british television or anime or comics or videogames or whatever. that is probably what i find to be the most tedious part of the nerd community (as someone who's only interested in a relatively small subset of nerdy things). it's really hard for me to ask for sci fi or fantasy recommendations from some 'sci fi and fantasy nerds' because they are very self-involved in their love or fanboyism for that thing. they tell me stuff that they think constitutes or embodies the genre (instead of a recommendation that fits what i'm asking for).

Yeah, I guess I'm interpreting that comment to mean something like that - that he enacted all these terrible racist things as satire, but was ultimately unsure if it was always being received as satire.

Comedy Central were dicks, he got into a fight with the guy that had been his cowriter forever, alienated a bunch of people. The racism thing had alot to do with the business side always assuming the white guy wrote all the jokes and Chappelle was just the face because he was a stupid black guy who could make a fool of himself.
