I'm kind of considering trying to restrict my diet/cooking to only sustainable foods. I'm currently seeing how difficult that might be for me, considering how much I like eating/cooking a wide variety of things.

    I'm like, wooooow.

It feels weird if I don't floss! And yeah I think I might be more dedicated than the average person. I like getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist.

Hmm, looking into sustainability practices, it doesn't seem like it'd be too terribly difficult to follow through on. I will research further.

Meatless Mondays are probably a good idea too.

I have noticed that when I floss regularly, my gums bleed less.

I'm not entirely sure what sustainable foods really means - in my understanding, it's trying to eat locally grown/raised vegetables and meats and such, as well as only eating things that you know have been prepared without hormones or genetically engineered crops. Buying, say, quinoa from a local source is more sustainable than buying quinoa that was imported from canada, because of transport costs, carbon footprints, etc.

I'm sure I am completely off base here. I think @Lost Salient and probably @Druhim are better informed about this sort of thing than I am, honestly. I know LS at least avoids fish because most of the fishing practices are wholly unsustainable.

I used to think my gums were bleeding because I flossed.

After all, the only time they bled was... when I flossed.

But then my dentist told me that was stupid and that I'm stupid.

Bad: I start every day immediately with a very large coffee with cream and sugar. When I drink, I drink a lot. When I smoke, I smoke a lot.

Good: I've been cig free for four years. I run 4-5 miles two out of every three days or so; I lift weights every other day. When I do neither, I'll try to swim, but I get bored really easily by swimming.

Diet: I've cut out processed sugars almost completely. But I negate most of the value there by putting lots of sugar cane in my coffee. I don't eat as much vegetables as I'd like, but If they're available I go hard. I try to eat around 70-80 grams of protein a day and milk helps there. I don't usually eclipse 2k calories. A good chunk of my calories come from fats, probably more fat and protein than starch.

From what I've read and in speaking with athletes ranging from weightlifters to soccer players, the negative effects of eating before bed are way overblown. But like most things that have to do with heath, there's arguments in either direction.

With a slightly more serious attitude. It's far more, by the time I get to bed I just want brush my teeth, pee and get into bed. I really don't want to spend my time flossing.

And in the morning I'm running around all elbows and arseholes trying to get ready. I shower, make breakfast and lunch, eat, brush my teeth, get dressed and leave with not much time to spare.

The answer of course is to get up earlier, but who wants to do that?

  • Blake TBlake T Registered User regular
Plus. Flossing is something I am plain not good at.

    if i don't floss, i haven't brushed my teeth

side note: i went to the dentist the other day and he said i had the best teeth he'd seen in years

    FLOSSING

I'm trying to stop drinking soda, so I'm drinking tea instead

Mainly herbal teas, there's this delicious licorice tea my sister left me that is just freaking delicious

Man, I'd forgotten how much tea makes you have to pee, like, all the time.

@Moriveth local produce being more environmentally friendly is by and large a complete fallacy. It's an economy of scale thing and if you're concerned about carbon footprints, you're generally better served continuing to buy from around the globe.

I'm phone posting and my internet is being a jerk, but if you google, 'Freakonomics + local food' you can get their podcast and transcript with links to a few research papers which debunk the locavore movement

That said, I buy locally because I like to support my local community and I kind of get off on being able to drive past the produce I'm going to be eating, even if there nothing objectively better about it

Interesting! What about eating in season, and such? Same thing?

    KanjiSig.png
  • TefTef Registered User regular
Yeah I think issues with eating things out of season would still hold up, regardless of where it's produced. I'm just assuming though

I mean, if you're eating mangoes that are grown in an equatorial region, those would probably be ok. The climate there is pretty much conducive with mango growing all year

Eating in season and eating locally is where the quality of food will come into play as it will be fresher.

Additionally seasonal food is cheaper due to basic economic laws of surplus.

thread I made some poor health decisions today and yesterday. It was hot as balls, so I didn't want to do anything. And then I didn't do anything. For two days. I knew academically that walking around outside would feel less hellish than chilling in my hot room, but alas.

Now I'm trying to break out by going to grab a beer with @Swill but he will not tell me what bar he is at.

    Just go to every bar.

    All of them.

Either you'll find Swill or you'll be so drunk that you won't care by the end of the night.

I did the same thing today, though - I tried to go for a bike ride before work but it is "Feels Like" 109 with 74% humidity and so I turned around and ran back inside.

I am going to yoga tonight and then for a hike on the old city wall but I still feel fat and awful.

the corporate legal practices associated with gmos (cross-pollination issues, using terminator seeds for foreign aid, etc) are pretty shady.

But healthwise there is laughably little evidence that they are anything but healthy. Conspiracy theorists are crazy, it turns out.
