It makes me sad that I've sort of developed a subconcious dislike of seeng trans characters in media at all. Because even when the shows seems to being trying raise awareness and understanding regarding transpeople(at least I think that was what Family Guy was going for) the depiction is still very cringe-worthy.
I dunno I watched a couple of episodes of Family Guy with a trans character and I felt it was really offensive. Dunno how they could have spun it as positive?

The episode with Glens father getting a sex change.

The episode concludes with him coming to accept his father for who she is.

The surrounding characters however respond really terribly to her. Like really disgusting stuff, but I got the feeling like the episodes goal was to point out just how terrible that kind of treatment was. It felt like it was trying to shock people into seeing how terrible they were being to other people.

But I could be wrong there.

Either way it was the episode that finally broke me. It turns out you can only make your characters so monstrous before its impossible to watch them.

And that shit was fucked up.

Because Seth MacFarlane and his writing team confuse "shallow political incorrectness" with "edgy humour", and because they are shitty writers in general.

Just for the sake of hearing it explicitly stated, can you clearly define and example those two things?

Just because something isn't blatant, or violently offensive doesn't mean it isn't some form of ignorance which should be casually accepted.

Nah. All of the other shows that he's been involved in that aren't Family Guy have been pretty decent.

I think FG at this point is pretty much him trolling as many people (people who like FG, people who hate FG, Fox S&P) as possible.

Edit: either that, or Seth Green is the root of all evil because FG and Robot Chicken both really, really like shitty shock humor with their 80's pop culture references.

This is not me agreeing or disagreeing with you.

@Henroid I'll try, but the examples are bound to be extremely subjective, and reflective of my own sense of satire and humour. From my perspective, shallow political incorrectness provokes zero critical thinking and offers no commentary on the issue it is supposedly trying to address (for example, Brian vomiting for a full minute after learning he had sex with a trans-woman). Edgy humour skirts/crosses the line of bad taste and politeness while prodding you to think or reassess the subject it's discussing; think of a Socratic gadfly except with offensive jokes (for example, the debate over the the South Park flag, depicting white stick figures lynching a black stick figure, and that the kids did not see it as a statement about racism but about violence, since framing it in racial terms was not immediately obvious to them. Ditto the Wheel of Fortune episode as a commentary on white and non-white perceptions and reactions to racial slurs, although the episode as a whole I'm kind of on the fence on).

As far as portrayal of trans-people in popular comedy, I can't think of an example that isn't completely shallow.

As a disclaimer, I was unable to sit through the entirety of most of the episodes of Family Guy I have attempted to watch not because they are offensive or insensitive, but because the writing is complete and utter shit. From a writer's perspective, I'm not exaggerating that it's quite possibly one of the worst shows in the history of television.

the worst part about when Family Guy and the like try to "tackle" an issue but don't actually offer any fresh insight and end up just being dumb and offensive is that they still come away with a smug satisfaction that they are being "progressive" and taking those goshdang bigots down a peg, even though they're simultaneously promoting harmful attitudes against minorities

take for example Family Guy's gay marriage episode where Brian's cousin Jasper is introduced as "your gay cousin" and his entire character is that he is gay. he does not do anything except be stereotypically gay.

it's not even that you're not allowed to have flamboyantly gay characters, but maybe have more not straight white male people that are strong, active, dynamic characters who have traits beyond "I really really like to have sex with other men"? Leeron is a p. good example

Transformers Animated has my favorite depiction of Megatron ever

i.e. someone who doesn't even give a shit about Optimus Prime, or any autobot, until the very end of the series

it really helped convey the feeling that Megatron is a badass robotic despot feared by civilizations, and how very small and ineffectual the autobot team feels in comparison

so that, when they triumph in the end, it really does seem like a Big Deal
