I am so fucking stoked that Beavs is a mod now

It's about time someone with an animator's construction perspective gets to rule with an iron fist around here.

also...once again i clicked "edit" instead of quote
finding out i edited a person's post feels so invasive.

What? What are you quoting? I never said that.

A mod must've edited my post and changed everything.

I just wanted to say (hopefully without sounding too yucky) that I've found the people in AC to be brilliant - welcoming of me, incredibly generous and helpful in the way I've been given feedback that's enabled me to improve what I'm doing. Thank you.

Don't flatter yourself AC, you're all a bunch of self-serving jerks who occasionally pretend to be nice people.

A useful consolation for new members who might feel our criticisms are too harsh:

"Those who venture to criticize us perform a remarkable act of friendship," wrote Montaigne, "for to undertake to wound and offend a man for his own good is to have a healthy love for him." I found it in this article about friendship, and we're all chums here.

I got an infraction once. I couldn't resist being mean. Given a few years to reflect, I can say...still totally worth it. So uh...kids, just make sure if you're gonna be mean, that it's worth the infraction?

Quick question: Been awhile since I've posted here and I don't want to piss off the locals. What's the etiquette for posting my new/first webcomic here to hopefully get some feedback? Just start a thread for it? Post it in another thread?

It hasn't "dropped" yet, but when it does, the PA community's opinion is one that I value.

Edit: Read up a little more here and found that I need to post some art/examples in my first post and no link to my website. Sounds good.

So I'm looking to get into drawing, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed with all the information I'm finding online, and not sure where to begin. I'm just looking for good start point just to learn sketching (to start).

Is it better to revive an old art dump thread or start a new one?

Either are ok. Seeing a new thread generally produces more interest than adding to an ancient one. It's up to you though. Personally, if I was out of it for a while, I'd just make a new one.

If you haven't had much training at all, and not knowing anything about your current skill level, I would suggest finding a copy of ol' Betty Edwards. This will get you thinking in the right mindset for drawing and eliminating most problems people have when starting to draw. From there check out the Andrew Loomis books here.

Feel free to make a thread for your progress to get some feedback, but also just to have a nice place to look back at your improvement over time. It can help as a motivator.

Where is a good place to post your artwork on this site?

  • two_larsenstwo_larsens Registered User regular
Do you just leave a link?

  • m3nacem3nace Registered User regular
    @two_larsens
This place is for critique, not showing off. If you want to receive useful crits on your artwork make a thread and post the stuff you want critiqued in it, inside image tags. Leaving a link is considered "sitewhoring," you have to post your artwork itself on here.

  • two_larsenstwo_larsens Registered User regular
Ok, I just thought it would be easier, so people could look at what they wanted instead of one or two things, or dozens.

  • two_larsenstwo_larsens Registered User regular
What an awful name to call people who are just trying to show their art work as well, as if there is something wrong with going to the trouble to making a website to showcase your hard work! It is not as if there is anything to sell on it.

  • brokecrackerbrokecracker Registered User regular
@Two_larsens The rule is there because some people come by and drop off links to their sites just to push traffic and for no other reason. I understand it is easier for you to direct people there so they can see everything in one spot, but that is only easier for you and not the people you are asking for free advice from. The term is archaic as far as Internet terms go, I know, but the rule makes sense.

Another rule to note is you can't post someone else's art for them. You should talk to your husband and tell him that if he is interested he should make an account and post some stuff, believe it or not we are a great bunch of people. But please go back and read the rest of this thread to get a feel for the rules.

Do you just leave a link?

Lots of the folks on here have links to their blogs/tumblr/DeviantArt pages in their signature lines.

I'd put your site there. That way any time you post, people will see your url in the signature and be able to visit the site if they want.
