EA Releases Command & Conquer for Free

In something that seems completely out of whack for the perennially evil EA Games, the company has released the original version of Command & Conquer - Tiberian Dawn... FOR FREE! It's for the game's 12th anniversary. I know that Tiberium Wars did pretty good business, so for those youngin's who, haven't played the game that started the whole shebang (or old diehards that want to relive old memories), here's your chance to do so.

The download is actually for the Gold version of the game, which was the native Windows 95 re-release (so no ultra-cool DOS installer for you). It should run in Windows XP fine, but you may or may not run into any quirks since the code is so old. YMMV. (FYI, it's the same version that was in the Command and Conquer First Decade compilation.)

Full disc images and install instructions are on the EA C&C site here. Now, download and play for Kane!

    We should probably try to setup a game, even though the AI can't build bases.

    Too bad that Westwood Online isn't functional anymore for it..

    This has to be a trick. Somehow it's going to give me AIDS, or my house will catch on fire, or something horrible will happen if I try to download this. EA cannot be trusted.

    When your neighborhood murderer and child rapist suddenly decides to give your child a ride to school, he hasn't had a sudden change of heart, it's a trick!

    The hero and protagonist, whose story the book follows, is the aptly-named Hiro Protagonist: "Last of the freelance hackers and Greatest sword fighter in the world." When Hiro loses his job as a pizza delivery driver for the Mafia, he meets a streetwise young girl nicknamed Y.T. (short for Yours Truly), who works as a skateboard "Kourier", and they decide to become partners in the intelligence business.

    This is awesome I use to play this everyday with my dad back in the day. So many memories.

    We had 2 computers setup next to each other to versus, he had put a curtain up between us so I couldn't peek at his base.

    The only good Covert Ops mission was the one with 5 bases, and you start out with 1 commando

    That mission made the entire pack worth it, though

    Wow, EA doing this? Something has changed in the cosmic alignment. This is, of course, a good thing. A lesson for any recent RTS player to play one of the most influential games of the genre.

    Too bad I still have my working original copy though.

    EA is trying to change its image. Ive heard a lot out of there about this. Producing a quality madden, skate, free games and a change in marketing is an attempt to return ea to the old days before they supposedly 'turned evil'

    The competition by activision for top spot has made them turn good again.

    No, I don't. I recall having to change a jumper on my SoundBlaster 16 board to change port to 240 so Mortal Kombat wouldn't freeze.

    Though dated 2 years ago, apparently announced for the decade pack.

    Greetings from your C&C Community Manager!

    To continue the ten year anniversary celebration of the widely popular
    Command and Conquer franchise, I am pleased to reveal EA's partnership
    with XWIS (XCC WOL IRC SERVER)!

    Through this partnership, all Command and Conquer games formerly
    supported by EA/Westwood Online will be redirected through XWIS, thus
    instituting XWIS as the main online game server management team. XWIS is
    a community driven online game server that launched in October 2003 to
    replace the XCC Community Ladder. The new and improved features enabled
    include chat, in-game ranks, matching filters, lobby monitoring,
    improved Quick-Match, and fully functional automatic ladders for clans
    and individual tournament players. The beauty of this partnership is
    that you won't have to download any external programs to utilize XWIS.
    All the enabled features and connections to the servers are already
    integrated into the supported games!

    I'm also excited to share with you that the Strike Team will be
    monitoring the banning and anti-cheat controls on a daily basis and will
    provide technical support as needed. The Strike Team is a website built
    of hardcore Command and Conquer fans and is sponsored by the EA German
    Community Team. Their goal is to ensure a controlled and fun online
    environment for all players.

    XWIS will commence a two week trial period with Command & Conquer Red
    Alert 2 and Command & Conquer Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. Once this
    trial is completed on Oct. 20th, XWIS will be supporting the following
    EA/Westwood online games:

    * Command & Conquer Red Alert 2
    * Command & Conquer Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge
    * Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn
    * Command & Conquer The Covert Operations
    * Command & Conquer Red Alert
    * Command & Conquer Red Alert: Counterstrike
    * Command & Conquer Red Alert: Aftermath
    * Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun
    * Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun: Firestorm
    * Command & Conquer Renegade
    * Dune 2000
    * Nox
    * Emperor: Battle for Dune

    EA is 100% dedicated to the Command and Conquer franchise and wants to
    ensure a strong and secure online gameplay environment. Long live
    Command and Conquer! We hope to see resurgence in the legions of NOD and
    GDI followers claiming ground online.

    Good luck soldier. Hit the hot keys and get online with Command and
    Conquer!

    tl;dr: EA used best and most popular freeware replacement for Westwood OnLine for the decade pack (So it says at least, never bought the pack myself) Implies the new free versions do as well?

    Holy Carp! I remember that old talking DOS installer and how it was the greatest thing since installers were created. It's too bad more games don't have something like that. They could use the time to introduce the game, or give hints, maybe even control configs and setup options.

    Renegade 'almost' FTW. The demo is still on Fileplanet and you can still find a few servers, but it's plagued by bad netcode and other issues. I played the hell out of the demo and had some good moments, but just couldn't bring myself to buy it because of all the problems. Came close though. It had such potential.

    That installer alone was a mark of sheer polish for an already brilliant game. I still remember the opening level. Everything seemed so cinematic after Dune II. The CGI / Acted intro taking the form of channel flicking (and subsequently explaining the plot and setting in about a minute), hovercraft making a beachhead landing while onshore artillery cannons pound on your support gunboat, "reinforcements have arrived", and THAT soundtrack probably made it one of my own personal most memorable game openings ever.

    Man, I wish they'd release that game for free. Nox multiplayer was insanely awesome. I keep wanting to do a game on, but there's really no way too thanks to the fact that the only way to play now is over Hamachi (it has no non-Westwood internet mode) and because the LAN mode isn't optimized for the internet the lag is horrendous. That's not even counting that the damn thing checks if all players have a unique CD key, so the only way to be able to play is to hunt down a copy on ebay.
