Wow, today, I wandered around and found a really cool subculture called Steampunk.
You haven't seen my gradual conversion from cyberpunk to steampunk then. :P
I'll be making a more steampunky monocle.
Fuck Cyberpunk. Jesus, somehow I got an LM to one of their sims.
Glad you decided to step into the cooler subculture. Heh, why didn't we find Steampunk in the very beginning, Steampunk themed fancy lads? I mean, we already were high class, we just needed some capes or hats, maybe some canes and presto!
My weekend begins today, and when I wake up tonight I plan to head right into building. With any luck, by Wednesday it will be finished enough that I can open it up to the public.

For serious. Radd, you really are the most impressive builder I have met so far.
Send some pic.s to LL or something, you might get some kind of award because they love to see people make non crappy crap in their "virtual environment."
Heh, I love steampunk, have for ages. Love cyberpunk, too, but cyberpunk is so much more prevalent, you see it everywhere. Steampunk is a little more uncommon.
so I log back in to my old character because apparently I hadn't purged SL from my harddrive, like i thought I had
I still have my mudkip and Darwinian outfits, and all the crap I created during the PA plot fun times (mudkip tatchikoma, mudkip combine gunship, untextured siege tank)

I would like your crap, a Mudkip Tachikoma sounds like a nice thing to have. Would you like a Wind-Up Tin Zaku?
You know, I've heard nothing but smack talking from people I know about this game. I'd never looked at it at all. But from what I'm seeing in this thread, it sounds like an awesome game. A creative playground. I don't see how that could be bad.
I might have to check it out.

Glow: Disguising poor textures and bad modellling since the PS2.
Too true. What makes it worse in SL is that you currently have very limited control over glow. Set aan object fullbright (so lighting and shadows do not affect it, it always looks completely bright) and it glows like the light of a thousand suns. Since most people don't know about glow, everyone sets their vendors fullbright, meaning you can't go shopping without turning glow off. People also abuse fullbright for other things, rather than creating light sources in buildings and whatnot, they'll set entire houses as fullright, inside and out. People set their hair fullbright. It's just odd.
If it's a light source, you have a bit more control over how much it glows, turn down the light intensite and the glow intensity drops. Still, I wish these two attributes were separate.
Apparently an update is coming in the next few weeks that will give better control over how much an object glows.

Ja, like Echo said. There's actually a lot of crap in SL. And since it's not really a game, not in the sense of WoW or Bioshock or anything like that, people log in, find themselves in a very crappy looking environment with no idea of what they're supposed to do.
Most of SL is illegal casinos, poorly built sex clubs, and awful looking default avatars. Even the nice areas vary in quality, since not everyone is decent with building.
Actually the casinos are out, and some of the sex clubs are actually really impressive. Don't know about human clubs, though. Heh.
Are there any places to rent or buy Steam punk themed homes/lots? I would maybe like to get into Babbage but is there land available and if so, is it expensive? I'm finding I like Steampunk more than fur.
Casinos are out whenever they get reported, you still see a few popping up here and there. Can't say I'll be too displeased when they're gone. Of course, that's no guarantee that whatever replaces them will be any less of an eyesore or scam.
And I believe New Babbage has some rental homes. I know they have parcels you can buy. One of my favourite steampunk areas in SL. The land there is pricier than on the mainland for the prims you get, but they maintain a higher standard of visuals and private sim owners are much more reliable than Lindens for enforcing policy and removing griefers.
I'm running an AMD 3500+ with 2 Gigs of RAM and two nVidia 7800GT video cards linked via SLi.
I get generally decent framerates while keeping reflections and glow running, with all of the detail settings firmly in the middle except for flexi-prims which I keep the detail cranked higher because it shows the most when you turn that down, moreso than any other detail settings.
When they did the Windlight preview it ran perfectly fine for me, that was before I picked up the second videocard. Apparently more fancy effects, or at least more control over glow and the sky settings will be coming within a few weeks.

2 7800's and you get decent frames? Okay, guys, we have a new benchmark for PC's. Fuck DX10, SL ought to be used if you want to make a computer truly cry...
I generally get 25-50FPS with a Stock Speed E6400, 2 gigs of DDR2 ram, and a 7600GT.
Would a 10,000RPM HD make a difference in performance at all? I'm curious on this one.

Given I have a 10krpm scsi hard disk and an 8800gts-640 card? not really. I think my cpu is dragging it downwards being a pentium D 920 (which I have been itching to fix)
I think theres a glitch with the 8800 cards that runs me out of memory. 10krpm drives help with overall system latency all around. I notice it on keystrokes. Having a faster platter spin speed makes a huge difference usually in loading things.
Huh - I've never really been all that interested in Second Life except for shots of what people have done.
But during my first IST class my teacher told me we'd be using Second Life alot in class as long as the majority of the students are over 18. I'm kinda interested in what exactly we'll be doing.
Mmmm... Cocks... on

There is actually "productive" ways to use second life. Its a very unusual game. I've taken a break from SL because theres only so much online debauchery a person can take.

So I take it you don't post in SE?
EDIT: Whoops! I read that as "Douchebaggery"
That aside, SL is actually really cool when you set it up right. Right now it is very open, but say you can host your own grid, then SL, as a regulated virtual platform, it is pretty advanced. But when you turn it into Myspace, well yes, you will get griefers and people trying to make sleazy strip clubs.
Alright guys, I have been trying to do some real 3d modelling that will keep perspective and everything going. I uploaded the concept of the Rosie Big Daddy and from there I made 2 planes, made them intersect at her skull and began roughing out a shape for her helm. I warn you, this looks like crap, and while yes, you can probably do better with just eyeballing it and throwing prims together, this is about an hours worth of work for a complete noob and it is dead on to those concepts in matter of scale, and positioning. Except maybe the sphere on top, that needs to be blended in a bit... But not bad for a complete noob.
EDIT: In case you cannot tell, it is nowhere near finished, but for just the rough geometry, I am proud of it, even though yes, my canes were better, but they were not accurately sized or anything, this is and hopefully everything will come out to be at the right scale and perfect.
Then I will sell it for big bucks.
Oh, and Echo, how did you make your eye glow like that? A torous inverted and then set to invisible with a glow on it or something?
Looks like you put a giant metal penis on your head. Cut the sphere in half.

Yeah, it looks like shit but it was just so silly and got me to really learn how to deal with the interface a little bit better. I'm sure if I used the grid and was being precise, well, then yeah it would have been much better. I will deal with it later. I have no Idea how I am going to texture this fucker though. I do have the game if that can help in anyway.
Need to build by numbers rather then by eye. Using ruler mode "local" helps alot with this, along with using grid. As for textures, the game isn't going to help too much, with how models are textured and how prims work. Quickie that Remington did a few minutes ago.

Well yeah, I know by eye is the wrong thing to do, but for getting started, just having fun is probably the best first step to getting experience as opposed to just doing tutorial after tutorial. At least for me it is.
You'd be surprised how helpful the Ivory Tower Tutorial is. It doesn't take that long, and it explains a helluva lot. I don't know if it's been updated for sculpies yet, if at all, but I highly recommend it. Once you've been through it, figuring the rest out is a breeze.
I have a posing stand to stand on when modeling stuff so I don't move around, I'll give you a copy if you don't have one.
WHen modelling stuff to stick on myself I put a cube somewhere, change its coordinates to the nearest even meter to make math easier when moving stuff around, and then move my posing stand (with me on it) to match. Then I start building.
I've been thru half of the Ivory tower. I made my canes just from screwing around but those were easy, just a few cylinders, and a sphere and texturing. I am having issues making things that aren't made out of simple geometric shapes, hence the helm, which I did remake which was better but I scrapped anyways.

Heh, ja that's light bloom. It's one of the features that's hidden in the debug menus because it doesn't work for everyone. If you have a beefy computer (I'm running an AMD 2800+, 2 gigs of RAM, and two nVidia 7800GT video cards using SLi) try hitting ctrl+alt+d (it may be ctrl+shift+d, I forget) to activate the two debug menus at the top of the screen.
Under client, scroll down to 'Debug Menu'. This gives you a window with a drop down selection box. Start typing 'render glow' until it autocompletes. Change "false" to "true".
If you're being really adventurous and have a lot of faith in your computer you can also activate reflections (which are lackluster on their own, but look fantastic when render glow is also on) by typing "render dynamic reflections" in the drop down box and setting it to "true".
.
I'm not getting a the drop down selection box. I can multiple thread SL now (I need that Core2duo UPGRADE!)

The canes you make the ones you showed a few pages back? If so, you got pretty decent skill, specially for being somewhat new to building. More messing around and you could probably get a pretty good Big Daddy going.

Kind of a mesh of 2D and 3D incarnations of the Space Pirates from Metroid.
*edit*
Added the Space Pirate avatar and another freebie to the build, you can now find them there. I've also updated all of the lifts, so you just need to left click on the hologram arrows and they'll transport you to the next level. Speaking of holograms, I updated all of the display holograms in the build, they are now approximately 33.3% more crescent fresh.

Oh, and yes, yes those were mine. Those were much more impressive because it is just what, 4 prims put together, but the Big Daddy is incredibly hard because I have no idea how to abuse the prims to make up the complex shapes.

There's some damn impressive stuff to be found. You just need to look for it.

I can't help it, another screenshot of the Space Pirate avatar, with some of the new holographic displays I'm replacing the old displays with.
I should make a space pirate HUD to go with the avatar, if only for looks.
