[Game On]WurmOnline: More like WorkOnline, am I right?

Disclaimer: This post is a work in progress. Mount Awesome isn't really set up to accept many new villagers but we can provide free food, medium quality tools, and use of 50QL forges and ovens. We can help new players settle nearby if interested as well but no further digging, mining, or terraforming will be taking place near Mount Awesome unless any of the village elders do it. We are working on getting the 1g village deed to expand the amount of villagers we can have (from 11 to 41), but making money in Wurm is borked as the economy is all kinds of messed up.

Here is a very NEW map of the world!
Version 2 of the Roadmap is out with even more villages and roads! Warning, this is a 20Mb picture file. You may want to right-click and save as.

New players, please do the newbie guide quests in Newtown to get your starter tools. The most important piece is
the 50QL Steel and Flint as we can't really make these. You will need this thing until the end of time, try not to lose it.

Directions on how to get to Mount Awesome are on page 3.

What is WurmOnline?
WurmOnline is a level-less, class-less, skill-based MMO that describes itself as a Fantasy Medieval Life Simulator.
The goals in game are almost all player-created which can leave more "traditional" gamers confused, bored, or put-off.
Some players join with the humble goal of starting a modest house somewhere in the woods, starting a farm, and perhaps
starting a craft and selling goods. Others strive to build communities and ever-expanding towns in an insatiable lust
to conquer nature. Whatever you choose to do, it's always best to have fun and find something you enjoy. The game is
indie, community-based, community-driven, and very small. The player base is spread over many timezones, but there are usually
only 100-150 players on at any given time.

A comprehensive Overview of WurmOnline's features.

What does WurmOnline cost to play?
WurmOnline offers FREE (not trial) basic accounts which basically limit how high you can raise skills and stats (capped at 20 out of 99).
Basic account are limited from certain activities that require higher than 20 in certain stats. Here are certain (but not all) activites
that premium players can do that basic players cannot:

Build stone houses (Requires 30 Masonry, Basic Players can still build wooden houses)
Build larger houses (Requires higher Carpentry)
Terraform Roads
Terraform near roads
Break pavement (requires 21 Body Strength)
Steal (Requires 20.50 Body Control)
Attack Other Players (20.5 Body Strength and Soul Strength is required to attack players on the Home server)

Premium player accounts cost EUR$10 (USD$14~15) for either a Two Month Subscription or a One Month Subscription and 5 Silvers of in-game currency.
When your premium time expires you do not lose your skill points, but all skill-related checks are basically set at 20 if that skill is over 20.
Your skills will also slowly decay back towards 20 until you reactivate your account. Basic accounts can perma-die if they suffer too many
consecutive deaths without improving their Body Strength stat. Upon death you suffer minor stat losses which can be regained (at lower levels)
with very little effort (around 10-20 minutes of working). If you die six times in a row with a Basic Account and you do not increase your
strength, your account will become unplayable. It is very hard to die from permadeath (and is mostly to prevent basic accounts on the pvp server
from suiciding against players) but it can happen, so be aware. Body Strength is easily raised by basic activites such as mining or digging.

Detailed information on permadeath from the wiki:
After your strength level has decreased by 0.06 from your max strength ie:
20.00 to 19.94
19.50 to 19.44
(Approximately 6-7 deaths), You will be "Perma-Dead", meaning you will be un-able to play as that character any more. This applies to both the home server and the wild server. You can re-gain your strength by doing tasks such as Mining, Digging, or Woodcutting.

Our player settlement has a large mixture of both premium and basic accounts. Basic accounts can limit you to not being able to do
large projects on your own, but you can still contribute to the community, find your own niche, and help out on projects and have fun. Although
with a skillcap of 20 you will not be able to craft high quality items, you can still craft items that a premium player can improve
into a high quality item.

Getting Started:
The first technological advantage of Wurm: it is done in Java. This means that we can reach gamers on operating systems
that usually have few if any of these types of games to play. We also consider Wurm to be the first 3D java game that
actually looks better graphically than most PC games while still being playable.

You will need Java to play this game, but this means the game also runs on other operating systems other than Windows!
To download and install the latest version of Java, see here: Java For All Operating Systems

Next you will need to register an account with WurmOnline: Register on WurmOnline (We are on the Home Server)

Next you will need to Launch the client. This can be done from WurmOnline's Website
in the top left corner from the "Launch" picture, right above the Google search. Alternately, here are the direct links
to the clients:

The release client: http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp
The test client: http://www.wurmonline.com/test-client/wurmclient.jnlp (The test client now connects to the test server. You will log onto it in a testing zone with 20 fighting skill and some weapons. There isn't much to do here.)

The first time you launch the client it will ask you for an install directory and download roughly 100Mb of files. This does not take long.
System Requirements:
  • 1 GHz Processor (2 GHz recommended)
  • Java Runtime, version 1.4.2_06 or better
  • A graphics card like nVidia GeForce 2,ATI Radeon or comparable,
with recent drivers and at least 32 MB Video RAM (128 MB recommended)
  • At least 512 MB of system memory (1024 MB recommended)
SiS Savage 3D, VIA UniChrome, and most Intel chipsets do not support a version of OpenGL high enough to run Wurm Online.
Some ATI Rage chipsets might be able to run the game somehow, but you will probably get a horrible performance.
Even a driver update won't help here. If you want to run Wurm Online on a laptop, you most likely have to use drivers
supplied by the manufacturer of your laptop (Dell, HP, Acer, etc) instead of those by the manufacturer of your graphics chip.
Note: If you receive poor performance with older ATi video cards it is recommended that you use the LWJGL renderer and not
the JOGL+AWL renderer. The JOGL+AWL renderer should provide overall better framerates for nVidia video cards and most later
model ATi video cards.

If you experience very very poor performance, try these quick fixes:
On the advanced tab turn off "unlimited" texture sizes. All players should probably do this regardless.
Turn off large textures
Turn off terrain bumpmapping
Turn off GLSL
Turn off sound
Turn reflections down
Turn tile decorations down
Reduce structure and item/creature render distance
Turn shadows down
Turn pretty weather off
Turn tree render distance as low as possible to start (number one cause of lag, there are lots of trees in Wurm)
If you are running the game in full screen mode, try windowed mode and/or a lower resolution

WurmOnline does not have the most efficient code or rendering. Despite it's simple graphics, it may still take a very
powerful computer to run the game at higher settings.

The test client adds new binds and functionalities to the game, but is still in the
testing phase. Some players report lower framerates while other report higher framerates.

You'll want to open your "autorun.txt" file in your WurmOnline folder (after the client finishes downloading)
and add these lines anywhere.
bind 1 activate_tool1
bind 2 activate_tool2
bind 3 activate_tool3
bind 4 activate_tool4
bind 5 activate_tool5
bind r toggle_climb

You can change these to whatever is more convenient. Check autorun.txt to make sure
the key you are changing it to is not already bound.

Gameplay

The user interface is very simple:
  1. You move around with the WASD keys.
  2. If you right-click on things a menu will pop up with various actions you can perform.
  3. If you press F3 you will see your inventory.
  4. If you double-click on an item in your inventory you select that item (a). Then when you right-click on something else (b) you attempt to use a on b.

Outdated instructions. Will update these when the time comes to do so.
Arcadia

Step 1: Register at The Empire Arcadia Forums. This step is how we decide which players are active
and inactive, as well as getting important information to the members of our community. Even if you don't read the forums, bookmark them and log in at least
once every 3-5 days.

Step 2: Set aside at least one hour to make the trip to Arcadia. The world of Wurm is 256x256 km (curse you metrics! that's nearly 159x159 miles!). We are located
almost as far north as you can go, but this also means we don't have to worry about random noobs wandering in and bothering us (most of the time).

Step 3: Arcadia is now ruins, vultured by various adventurers.

Tips for New Adventurers:
  • Newtown lags for everyone, it's not just you. Waiting 5-10 seconds for the game to load will help before trying to move.
  • For your first 24 in-game hours of playing, the Bistro (blue building next to the compass) in Newtown will give you free food and water refills.
  • Do not fight anything. ANYTHING. At the starting level of fighting, the only thing you can kill is a rat.
  • Open up your inventory, expand your Body until you can see your left hand. Drag your wooden shield onto your left arm to equip it. While this won't provide hardly any protection, you may brush off a spider attack one day through a fluke, which could save your life. I've had it happen before.
  • Right click on a tile near you and make sure your "Mode" is set to "Defensive". It should be by default, but double check. This could help you should you get attacked.
  • You can outrun almost all the animals you will come across as long as you are running on dirt/packed dirt/road. Spiders may outrun you on grass.
  • There is no in-game map.
  • You will not start with a compass and you will not have any means of getting a compass until you get to Arcadia.
  • Wilderness Survival 101: When cutting down a tree, the felled tree's large end usually points north, while the pointy end usually points south.
  • Cardinal directions square up to the tile sides, not the corners.
  • Stop moving for 2-3 seconds to regenerate your stamina (green bar). If this bar reaches 0% you become exhausted and cannot move.
  • Rest when your stamina is at 50% and you do not see any beasts around. You never know when you'll need to run from one and you don't want to be at 10% stamina when you do.
  • If you're near water, drink. The blue bar in your top-left corner is thirst and as it goes down so does your stamina regen. Ideally thirst should never be below 60%.
  • Spiders almost always attack you in the legs. When this happens, you are dead. Stay at least 5 tiles away from spiders at all times if you can. I've seen them aggro from 8 tiles, occasionally.
  • Bears, Crocodiles, and Rats are the only aggressive enemies that can swim. If you are being chased by a Spider, Wolf, or Cat, you can jump into water and be safe.
  • Your starting equipment will always spawn on your character as long as you died with it in your inventory. All other items always drop on your corpse.
  • Your starting equipment can never be improved. It will eventually get too low quality to work with, or break, and you will want to replace them with craft tools at some point.
  • Almost all items are replaceable. While it is not smart to wander into the wilderness with all of your crafted tools and items, if you lose them and can't find your corpse, we can help resupply you.
  • Travel light. Carry only what you think you'll need when adventuring away from town. Carry weight affects stamina drain.
  • Ingame currency in not mintable. The only way to get it is to sell crafted items to NPC traders or to buy it off the website.
  • Ingame currency is not tradeable for real-world money.
  • Before cutting down any Willow, Oak, Cedar, or Birch trees, ask. Pine trees are best for early things because they grow fast and are plentiful
  • You can turn off the Jenn-Kellon chat tab by typing "/kchat" in local. You can add this line to autorun.txt: "say /kchat" to prevent it from turning on everytime you play
  • If you see a mine shaft with a locked fence in front of it, do not attempt to "fall" into the shaft. If the fence is locked, GMs will not help you get out and you will have to /suicide if no players can let you out nearby.

We know longer use IRC in-game. The information for setting it up ingame is still relevant for those who want to.
Step 4: IRC
We use Internet Relay Chat as our main source of communication in-game. Luckily for you the game has a built-in client!
Here is a detailed description of the commands: Wurm IRC. Read that later.
Here is what you need to know. Open your autorun.txt and insert these lines:
irc irc.slashnet.org 6667
ircsay /ns identify <password> (leave this line out until/unless you register with NickServ, read the above link for more information on that)

This will cause your client to join IRC and join our channel every time you log in to Wurm (you can add any extra channels later.
Any of these commands can be bound to a keyboard key or executed in the console (F1) as well. It's not uncommon for the in-game IRC client
to disconnect when idle for roughly 30 minutes. You can also run an out-of-game IRC client to talk to people in-game while you are not.
A popular Windows client is mIRC. I will not provide information or instructions on setting up any out-of-game clients.
Keep in mind that Slashnet's IRC server's only allow you to run 3 IRC connections of any kind to their servers from your IP address.
If you run homebrew on your NintendoDS, DSOrganise has an IRC client that can be configured to
connect to Slashnet so you can harass us on the go. Don't be surprised if you get accused of being a spy.

I'm In the Game, What Do I Do?
Alot of new players have trouble finding what they like to do, which is ok. There is alot to do in the game and no one to tell you what
to do. You are always welcome to ask if anyone needs help with something. There are plenty of "unskilled labor" jobs, such as cutting logs
into planks and shafts, helping build house walls (When your carpentry is high enough), mining, cutting trees, spider bait, etc.

Examples of things some jobs players do:
  • Cook - supplies the town with meals to eat, very important (usually also involved farming)
  • Blacksmith - provides crafted tools of higher quality to work with
  • Carpenters - Help build houses and needed wood items (beds, carts, barrels)
  • Weaponsmiths - Self-explanitory, some "tools" count as weapons (axes for treecutting, sickles for harvesting, etc)
  • Armorsmiths - There are chainsmiths and leathersmiths as well as plate armor (which none of us can use really, 30 STR required)
  • Roadbuilders - A combination of digging and terraforming and paving, you almost always need to premium to have enough digging to build good roads
  • Explorers - Dodging rabid spiders and braving the wilderness to find valuable resources, as well as "rescue" items from abandoned settlements
(coming back alive gets you bonus points)
  • Stone Masons - If premium, can help build stone houses at 30 Masonry. At 20 Masonry (free account accessable) you can start and continue on a Colossus statue.
  • Road Safety - Building towers (a work-intensive endeavor) that spawn guards to help keep the outer areas of our settlement safer from beasties

These are just a very few of the things you can do in the game. There is also tailoring, farming, animal herding, fishing, growing orchards, etc, etc. The list goes on. Most of our players do a number of these things together, not just one. Find things you like to do. Everything is useful and contributes to the town. Arcadia is a very communist-based setup. Nobody gets paid but we all benefit from everyone else's work and contribute to the town in order to flourish and grow. It's okay to do selfish things as long as you chip in elsewhere in your time. New players will get a serious jump start in anything they do because they can access virtually any tool or facility that we already have built. I would estimate that your progress towards anything in Arcadia versus a new player trying to get help in New Town would be at least 10x faster, if not more. Players that don't contribute anything to the town and are only playing for themselves will be removed from the settlement. Players that break laws, act like jerks, etc, can be set so that the guards attack them on sight (this is a very extreme course of action and our last resort with players).

Stealing and PvP
As long as you keep the "Lawful" and "Faithful" buttons highlighted white (turned on) you won't be able to "accidentally" break laws. By using the "/reputation" command in your Local chat window you can see your reputation. Reputation goes down with every illegal action you do (by alot) and goes up at a rate of 1 per hour (even while logged off). Once your reputation goes below 0 you become an "outlaw" meaning any player can attack you at any time without penalty (although most won't, it's a safe idea to stay away from large towns while an outlaw). At -100 reputation all Jenn-Kellon guards will attack you on sight. At -300 reputation your character will transported to the Wild (PvP) server. Firing catapults will lower your reputation by 30 on the Home Server every time. Illegal activites on the Home server are almost never worth it and are not recommended.

The Wild server is accessable by swimming west across the ocean from the Home server. You can travel back and forth across the servers
freely if your reputation is not in bad standing. Players with bad reputation cannot leave the Wild Server (to prevent mayhem and havok on the Home Server). The benefits of being on the Wild server are that there is player law and open PvP, and the Metal Ores can get up to 99 Quality Level on Wild, while Metal Ore is capped at 50 QL on Home. There are currently no plans to move to the Wild Server but the option is alawys open in the future.

And finally, here is a composite picture of one of Something-Awful's settlement's road building projects, to show you how quickly things can change in the game:

Composite of Bearback Mountain Highway

Here is Utsa's very cool map of our area in relation to New Town:
Linky because huge map is huge

Questions and Comments welcome, we are always looking for new players.

Edit: Some final words of advice from fellow players at Something Awful:
That's your problem right there. Time and time again, I see new players make the same three big mistakes. The first mistake is building a house right away. It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, and many people who finish their house quit right afterwards. I HIGHLY recommend you either get on-deed housing from one of the guild leaders, or ask a skilled carpenter for help. Wurm Online is a very open-ended game and you pick your own goals, but players who treat it as Barbie Dream House frequently wind up dissatisfied.

The second big mistake is to go wandering through the woods alone and unprepared. This is the second quickest way to get killed in the game (the fastest is to jump off a cliff) unless you know what you are doing. If you're new, don't wander far from populated areas, travel only during the day, and avoid dense vegetation that blocks your line of sight. When you start out, a DEER can kick your rear end. You might want to grind up some fighting skill (doesn't take long at all to get to 20 fighting) before venturing out by yourself.

The third big mistake is to try and do everything yourself. Wurm Online hates everybody, but it ESPECIALLY hates hermits, jacks-of-all-trades, and do-it-yourself-ers. This game was basically designed to promote collaboration and group efforts. Pick 1-3 skills to specialize in, and only grind those skills. For all the other skills, find specialized village members and ask them for help and equipment. You'll find that other people will help you more frequently and more quickly if you help out with village projects, and if you help out the village in general with your specialized skills.

Any PA'ers that are also goons can also hit up the Goon recruitment threads here for more information:

We are starting to make money at a nice rate. We've made 7 silver by selling a few compasses and meals, with little effort beyond what we were already doing. At last count we were at 77 silver, but bob is starting to mine our silver and gold, and people are starting to make jewelry out of it, so our coffers should grow soon.

Well, I made a character and I started the long journey to Arcadia. Along the way I was messing with options. I cut down a tree and made some random stuff to see how open ended crafting was and it seemed really cool.

So, about halfway there, just following the dirt road past the fork to The Price is Right, everything started to go awry. The guide was outdated too much or I am an idiot, but I ended up in the middle of no where and I have no idea where I am or how to get anywhere. Is there a way I can find my way to Arcadia from here, even if it means going back to the starting town and finding a guide or something?

I am all alone in the wilderness and the scorpions want to eat my flesh. Oh no!

Right when you get to the Price is Right some idiot dug up alot of the road into a massive craggy dirt field. You just have to keep going until you find the forest path ahead. It's all a straight shot though through the dirt field.

If you get lost and end up in a lake next to a sign that says "Hellside", you can go that way to get Arcadia as well. Go past Raffeh's house and take a left on the cobblestone. Otherwise try to follow the guide. If you get lost your best bet is to keep going north and hope to hit either a road or water. The reason is that once you get to the Price is Right you are almost directly south of Arcadia (give or take a few mountains).

Also, get on IRC first thing and someone can usually help you out. Alot of us never made our first journey. It's frustrating as hell to get lost, die, and start back in New Town. I know, because I died 7 times before making it to Arcadia. The average is about 1 death per new player to make it. If you get hopelessly lost and you want to make a hail mary play, pick a direction and stick to it as much as possible. More often than not you will eventually hit some kind of player settlement/road or a spider and die anyway. Last ditch effort you can use /suicide and give it another go. Make sure not to use it too often without raising your strength or you will permadie.

Maybe we can get someone to check out the new spot, make some screenshots, and possibly update the guide.

So, as much fun as I had playing Wurm, I simply don't have the time to enjoy it anymore. The job has picked up, my internet access is sporadic at best now, and I don't have any free time anymore.

Rather than just let my account die off slowly, I'm willing to give it to a fellow PA'er who's interested in playing. Ideally it'll be someone who's played the game a bit, so they know they like it, but still has basically a brand-new character. The account still has almost a full month of paid time on it I believe, and although my skills aren't "stacked" by any means, it's better than starting with a newbie character.

Send me a PM if you're interested. As for my fellow Wurmians, thanks for a great time, and I'll keep checking in to see how Arcadia's doing.

The Home Server is always a great staging ground for new characters to skill up in, but I'm sure every large community of players makes plans to travel to Wild at some point, it would be silly not to.

Nobody's really come up with a timeline or a set of goals of when. We would need one or two good miners before we even considered it, to be honest.

I doubt we have any serious plans to move entirely to Wild, but an Outpost has always been thrown about in the future. And we at least have Rhesus over there to tell us how bad we're going to die.

I updated my map a couple days ago (when I was last on. Man, I should pop back in and work on the orchard some more). Mostly I improved the accuracy of the Rosewood - East Lake path, since Stonegate's road is more complete and I helped straighten the dirt road leading to it a bit (the 'crossroads' of the old guide is all but gone now, simply a 3x3 dirt patch before the path runs into a cobblestone road). It's much less of an abstract estimate of the route and more of an actual map. Also added rough estimates of where people have said Stonegate and Arcadia bay are located 9haven't been that far west or north myself).

I find navigating by the map to be extremely useful. My last trip from Newtown back to Arcadia was done in just under thirty minutes, while hungry and tired at several instances.

I think we need to look into building a stone road across the Steppes, or at the very least a pair of signs for an official Steppes Crossing.

Edit: The topic is missing "of" - Empire OF Arcadia.

Well, it wasn't really a typo, I just thought it had a nice ring to it, sort of like "Empire: Arcadia" or a newspaper headline. If it really really really really bothers you though, I can totally put an "of" in there.

I think that either Empire of Arcadia or Arcadian Empire sounds the best, but it's not a big deal.

Everyone should play this game for a couple weeks at the least, it's a unique experience.

Has anyone taken a look at this mapping tool: Wurm Mapper. Would be cool to make a map of some areas. Here's the forum post accompanying it: http://www.wurmonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13240

There is a new route slightly different route to Arcadia. The old way has fallen apart, so you will get lost and eaten if you take it, so don't.

Follow the guide until you get to the steppes, right when you get to them look for a paved road on the right and a sign that says Arcadia/stonegate thisway (or something like that). If you hit Price is Right you went too far.
Keep following it and it will take you around a peat field. You can go through the peat, but it's not a good idea since it slows you down.
Eventually you'll get to a building by a lake called "public road", go into it, turn to the right and go through the door into the mine.
Keep going through the tunnel and when you hit a fork go up. Exit the tunnel, go through building and go straight.
You can start following the guide again, but basicly keep following the paved road and you'll get to arcadia.

Edit: On an unrelated note here's a cude map showing where stonegate is:
    Stonegate.gif
As you can see I made a road that almost goes to their road, so you'll have to do a little swimming.

Is that the road that ends at a copper mine? Because if so, excellent work. Your road-making technique is flawless.

Yes that's the one. It was good practice and I needed a way to get to the water from my farm. If anyone wants to use the road or mine feel free to.

This looks interesting. I've always been into crafting in mmo games so hopefully I'll enjoy this. Probably give it a shot some night this week.

I created a character yesterday; I'm going to attempt the journey this afternoon or tomorrow I think. Wish me luck.

Are the requirements of this game moreso than the ones for WoW? I have a pretty old PC, but it can run WoW, and I would like to get into this. Its seems like something I could enjoy more.

I don't specifically know, but considering Wurm looks far worse than WoW, I'd say no.

Looks are pretty deceptive here. Keep in mind this game is programmed by pretty much a small handful of people and in Java. It runs like crap on older computers, but if your old computer is at least 1.5Ghz and you have anything close to or higher than a Radeon 9700/9800 or GeForce 5/6 series, you'll be able to play with the settings turned down.

So after getting lost more than once, starving, going around in circles on the steppes (twice!), and nearly getting eaten by a spider, I made it!

What skills should I start working on -- what does Arcadia need?
