Arcade. It feels more realistic than most arcade racers, but Gran Turismo it is not.

You even get like, points, for doing cool stuff like drifting and drafting.

I'm not too familiar with NFS, but I'm pretty sure PGR's handling feels a lot more realistic than NFS.

The result is that it feels realistic enough to make you feel awesome when you do cool stuff, but not so realistic that doing awesome things is impossible.

Yeah, some cars will spin the fuck out on you if you push them too hard (i.e. the Sledgehammer) and you will sometimes need to do crazy things like use your brakes but it's one of those easy-to-learn-effort-to-master type things.

Well, you can't take a 90 degree turn at full speed in PGR. It's more like... well, let me make a diagram.

PGR4 has realistic physics and driving, but puts them in unrealistic positions, like powersliding round 500m bends or taking a 90 degree corner at 240.

Talking of it as a sim is wrong. It isnt. But it also isnt arcadey. Burnout is arcadey. PGR4 is definetly more sim than arcade.

The bike list is kinda 'meh' in my opinion.

I'm sure it'll be fun to play, though. I ride every day to commute and am a motorcycle enthusiast, yet I can't seem to find a motorcycle racing game I enjoy.

Hopefully this game will fit the bill besides having to race on GSXRs and Ninjas D:

Main problems were they removed a lot of fun vehicles because they focused on having only really fast cars. All the suv's were gone too - which were an interesting challange. You could now use any car for any race which meant two things; the gameplay got really samey because you could always use the same car, and the difficulty was fucked because of all the different vehicles you could use to do it. It was too damn easy to get all plats - I'm only missing one or two out of boredom to be honest.

Also mutliplayer took a step back in terms of guests, split screen etc. So did weather, and loading times.

I can't blame them though - it was a launch title and these things are always going to be mad rushed. It still looked damn cool, the cockpit view was fantastic, the garage was a great idea. Hopefully this time they've had the time to reall craft what they wanted. I hope pgr4 is more akin to pgr2, just as I see pgr3 as being more like pgr1 (which I fucking hated, and I love pgr2 so much it's unreal).

Surprise! This game whomps some ass. So far it's prettier than PGR3, the car variety's a lot better (it's fun to throw an '81 Esprit around, and I can't wait to try the Cortina and the Mini Cooper I've unlocked along with it), and there's a good challenge to it; I started out Career mode on Normal and it looks like I'm not going to be finishing first anytime soon until I unlock some faster rides. The small touches (including a mildly customizeable paint job selection and the whole international feel to the opponents) are great, too. Only gripes are that I don't get a reliable digital readout of speed and gearing in cockpit mode, and I can't customize the controls (I'm so used to using B/A for gear up/down and X for handbrake in other games that the Y/X shifting/A e-brake scheme will take some getting accustomed to).

OK, now I'm confused: I've seen reviews complain that the only damage is "cosmetic", but I don't even see much of that at all -- I checked a replay where I smacked an M1 head-on into a guardrail at about 95 MPH and aside from what I think is a little spiderweb crack in the windshield it looked pretty much intact. Boo!

Not unless the racing is in karts. ;)

Seriously, sports/racing games definitely don't have the draw on here of other types of games. It seems, in general, that racing games are their own column, with their own forums, etc.

So how is PGR4? My first impression based on videos was 'meh' - Forza is more my speed.

I actually wonder why. Too far towards a different kind of geek culture (sports fans/gearheads) that supposedly clashes with the hardcore video game fan's persona? No storylines or empathizable characters? A steep learning curve? I used to think "drive something fast and do wicked powerslides" or "check it out Bo Jackson is retarded fast" were about as universal a draw as anything until I came here and saw every "I just bought a new system" recommendation thread start with the phrase "I don't like sports or racing games". Kind of grates on me, but whatever.

Anyways, I've been playing this for five hours straight and while the flaws are kind of starting to show (again, no MPH/RPM/gear indicator in cockpit mode, especially when you can't see the dials -- i.e. the Jaguar D-Type -- suuuucks; also motorcycles in cockpit mode = ready a barf bag), it's still way the hell fun. A transcription of the thoughts that ran through my head when I got to the "drive the Maserati 250F on the Nurb during a snowfall" career Invitational can basically be broken down into alternating usages of the phrases "oh shit," "damn that's gorgeous" and "whee", finished off with a "damn, I can't believe I actually finished that race with 15 seconds to spare".

What kind of multiplayer modes are there this time? Ive heard of an open city mode similar to Hunter from Midtown Madness 3(Or more recently, Infection in Halo 3), but are there any other modes that allow one to drive through a whole city without the barriers?

    this is incredible.

3 was good, but not great because of the horrible way they set up the career. in this, theres an actual career mode, and 3's is now the arcade mode where you race for medals and not standings. that was my biggest gripe with 3, if i wanted to just pick up and play a race it was a hassle. 4 is perfect because of the way they streamlined it.

ive put about 4 hours in, and this is the most fun ive had with a racing game on the 360.

Photomode adds a lot of effects and AA. Of those screens I just posted, the first one is basically what gameplay looks like, but the second two look way better than the game actually does. There isn't blur like that in cockpit mode.

It's a great looking game, definitely among the best released to date, but I thought that'd be good to clear up in case anyone didn't know.
