So, Marvel announced that Thor is changing genders
More accurately, Mjolnir is being passed from the blond Asgardian man everyone knows to a new character, who is a woman we don't know much about yet.
The old Thor will continue to exist but he's not really Thor anymore and has his own thing going on.
Whereas this new woman is the real Thor, wielder of the hammer. Marvel even made a point of saying she's not "Lady Thor" or "She Thor", she's just the new Thor taking up the mantle, just like other legacy characters like Flash or Spider-Man.
Also of note: her outfit is super badass and not really that sexualized and guys I kinda wanna make this and wear it to like a con or something sometime because she looks so cool
That is a pretty great outfit, but why's there only one sleeve?

What am I supposed to do with all these T-shirts that read "She sells She Thor by the sea shore"?
Also the other arm is defensive, with the plate on there. Functional! Kind of a shame about the overly boobtastic chest armour, though it's still a good leap forwards for comic design.
Is Comic Thor's backstory still just any regular person who picks up Thor's hammer and is worthy?
depends on which comic
616 is yes, kind of - it's more Thor and Donald Blake share a body but you could argue that Donald Blake had to be worthy in the first place (EDIT - though from memory Odin actually chose Donald Blake because he was perceived as "frail", what with needing the walking stick and all)
Ultimate (which is closer to what the movies are based on) is no

EDIT again - just fact-checked
616 Thor's backstory is Odin creating Donald Blake as a way to teach Thor humility (original Thor is a lot like initial Thor in the first movie), deliberating creating him with a disability and as a medical student; after a number of years when the lesson is learned and he is worthy of Mjolnir Odin reveals his true identity to him
Ultimate's backstory I'm more familiar with since I read it more recently, which is that Thor is just Thor reincarnated on Earth with lots of tech that give him powers similar to Thor's and he is also an angry hippie, and he later finds Mjolnir in a later storyline
Has any writer done anything with the inscription on Mjolnir not including women? Spells are notoriously literal and it seems like you could do some interesting stuff playing around with it.
Obviously it's not meant to be male only though, women have lifted Mjolnir in the past.
Apparently there was an alt universe where Rogue absorbed Thor's essence and all and basically became thor, which ended with Odin updating the inscription to say "he or she".

I believe in the early 616 comics it was a lot more ambiguous as to what Thor actually was, they eventually settled on the actual god Thor sent down to earth to learn humility but it was possible to interpret it as Donald Blake taking the image and powers and title of the mythical Thor
which seems to be a direction they're returning to with this new thor
