This is how politics works, right?
You have to remember that the Japanese learned writing during various points of contact with various Chinese cultures and Korean kingdoms over a period of several centuries. Consequently, the majority of multi-kanji compounds in Japanese have a reading that can be mapped back into some Sino-Tibetan language, be it Cantonese, or Mandarin or whatever (or a mapping into Korean that in turn maps back into a Chinese language).
Edit: Or in many cases a mapping into a pronunciation that's half a millennium out of date compared to how current speakers pronounce the word.
