UK speech law is a bit draconian, you can get charged with libel for saying things that are true
US speech law is a bit too lax, it's effectively impossible to get anyone convicted of libel
We need some kind of middle ground
Not as hard as it sounds in the US if 1) the media isn't involved; 2) you're not a "public figure" and 3) it's very clearly a fact alleged and not an opinion.
Like, if you go around town claiming that you slept with someone and you really didn't that is ridiculously actionable if that someone wants to sue your ass for defamation/slander.

Yeah libel/slander statues in the US are one thing I think is actually tuned properly. Truth should definitely be an absolute defense there.
Simon Singh has been championing reform of the UK's statutes. Incidentally he also wrote one of my favorite books (The Code Book, a history of cryptography).

I finished reading that book like 2 weeks ago! It was a pretty interesting read
Jim sterling was labeled an "enemy" by the Gamergaters earlier than even this little non issue, mostly because he decided to not side with them, the same with MovieBob who also does content over there at the escapist.
"if you're not with us, you're against us"
We have thousands and thousands of people behind this, but our voices are only a fraction of what they could be, if only the silent majority would DO SOMETHING.
Stand up and be heard. You're already here hearing and talking about this. That's half the battle.
Now finish it.
What the hell have you done today?

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

I love that in these big sweeping speeches they never actually say what 'this' is

Because they don't even know what "this" is beyond they have a hunch "this" exists, and well a hunch is more than enough to turn something into a giant excuse for douchebaggery and dickshitting

And many of the "thises" they do agree on are fabrications or misinformation, or ignorance about normal, professional lives.

Well the Muslims are occupying a lot of Jewish territory, forcing them into a city that's being bombed with blockades, hiding behind superior firepower...

Good grief.
I would listen to a podcast that is just Jim Sterling coming up with elaborate plots to literally get in bed with Chris Remo.

I did type those out as you're. it didn't save that draft. I swear

This is hilarious because just a few days ago I read a tweet where a gamergater labelled SJW's as the Religious Right of the 21st century.
Apparently everyone's the religious right to their opponents.
all that climbing had the most perfectly possible end

Any group that claims silent/moral majority status is the religious right (so yes probably everyone is to somebody)
It's a key demographic for fedora sales.

Yeah, there's no way that's not satire.
So who's the pope in this scenario?
