I am very lucky in the sense and I feel bad you other ladies have it so rough, because when it comes it buying a piece of essential clothing shouldn't be that goddamn difficult and expensive.

Had the weirdest argument w/my girlfriend last night and this morning. She made a joke about being conservative and it kinda worried me/flipped me out, which hurt her feelings, so she started teasing me/accusing me of radicalism and it all kinda spiraled out of control.
Eventually I conveyed "saying conservative tells me you are associated with people who are WAY more likely to want to cave my head in with rocks, and even given what I know of your politics and activism and how you feel towards me is completely diametrically opposed to the right-wing, it still scared me that you didn't get why that spun me out."
She took that in and we talked it out and I was sobbing by the time I dropped her at work. Jesus I love her.
Mother and daughter sits down in the waiting room, Mother gets a tabloid magazine, starts reading it out loud.
Daughter: "Mom, please,stop reading it out loud".
A minute or so pass, and then she points to something in there, and says to her daughter
"Oooooo, did you hear what happened to this guy"
Daughter: *exasperated sounding* no, what?
Mother: "He had sex with a transsexual!"
Daughter: "So, why's that important?"
Mother: "Because he's an idiot".
During that last line is when I was called in to my appointment, I don't know that I could have told her to fuck off regardless.
Anyway, it was disturbing to see the mother behaving like that, but heartening to see hte daughter not appear to enjoy any of that shit even with that...influence.
I was once that daughter. Back in the 90's my mom saw some guys holding hands while grocery shopping and she was "Oh my god they're gay!" in a hushed whisper. A resounding "So?" was my answer.

I am a resident of Westerly. I was proud to wake up this morning and read the news that you were considering meeting the needs of transgender students in the school system. Unfortunately the yes/no opinion poll in the Providence Journal is overwhelmingly negative, and the comments on the article are sadly, ludicrously misguided and hateful. I wanted to reach out and offer support for a resounding YES! Please do the right thing and make the Westerly school system a safe place for transgender students.
When someone is suffering, we should react with compassion and understanding, not with fear, ignorance and hate.

Whenever an LGBT-related poll would come up on the CBC website, especially as it related to schools, they would be bombarded with thousands upon thousands of negative votes, which was odd when every other poll on the website would struggle to get a few hundred votes.
Then the CBC admins released a note saying that an overwhelming amount (greater than 95%) of the negative votes came from outside the country (the vast majority of those were from the States), and posted that most of their click-throughs came from some super religious right websites in the states who were telling theri readers to go to CBC and vote that way.
I didn't see the actual poll, but I wonder how much of that is the same.
There's definitely communities out there which will try to take influence on online discussions on other sites. Which is to some extent a completely normal thing (hey, check out this...), but it can also create huge attacks.

I didn't even know they were going to have an open meeting, I would've gone and said something. The one bright spot is that the Rhode Island Dept of Ed is going to continue working on this statewide, hopefully some minds can be changed by the time it comes up again.
