I think there may be some confusion in architecture.
Dual Core systems generally mean mother boards with two separate processors, similar to the old G3s, G4s, and G5s offered by Apple. Requires multi slotted mother boards.
Core Duo is a multi core setup, but they are not separate, but exist on the same die.

That's incorrect. Dual core or multi-core refers to two or more cores on a single CPU. I've never in my life heard of multi-cpu setups being referred to as 'dual core' or 'quad core' or whathaveyou.

I enjoy building my own PC but when it comes to clock speeds/bus and the various 'cache's I get a bit blurry-eyed.
I'd like to think that if I upgraded my CPU to a faster one that my overall system performance would improve, even if only a bit.
Are you saying that a faster processor wouldn't make that little Vista 'performance' number go up? That's all I'm looking for, really. ;-) If I had a few more hundred dollars to spend I would definitely upgrade the MOBO, PSU and get as fast a CPU as I could. Then I would make sure ALL the numbers were as high as I could afford!
Looking at the required spec's for some of the games coming next month it seemed like a dual-core would be beneficial. *shrug*
the way to go. Sure while the core 2 and the quad cores share the same slot types, and sure while the dual core chips are just starting to really be taken advantage of in the upcomming year, the quad core is going to be a good long-term investment, its awesomeness and I love it, yes.
Because Pentium D's and the Pentium Extreme Edition (965, 955, 840) are dual core.
ok. that's it. I officially give up on ever trying to understand this. i'm returning the stupid CPU and will buy a cpu/mobo combo when it's time to upgrade.
It is a pain. I'm going with a PentiumD duel-core in this computer since it's an older 800 FSB. Pentium Ds & Core2Duos are overclocking monsters. The PentiumD I have my eye is a 3.0 that can be jumped upto 4ghs easy. I just have to watch the heat.

You're right. I was thinking of dual processors.
According to the ASUS support site, all revisions of that mobo support all the processors. You just need to have the latest bios version.
