I love the gelatinous cube, just because of all of the amazing opportunities it presents to an enterprising DM

door opens to a 10x10 room. coins and bones appear to be floating before your eyes. No other movement can be seen.

    Oh, you touch it?

The room begins to distort slightly, like looking at the surface of a rippling pool. Your hand begins to burn, as if by flame, and you feel yourself being pulled forcibly into it. You are in agony, your every nerve tingling with panic.

    You're so fucked right now.

your head falls off and you become one

I once dove headfirst into a pool with a glimmer at the bottom of it as a warforged juggernaut

this was not the best of decisions

it took me 10 turns to realize that if I power attacked and punched this thing once it would die

4th Ed. is supposed to be very online-friendly.

DM client, map program, voice chat, etc.

You just gotta wait another 8 months till it comes out.

I'm really hoping they do a good job with it.

Fuckers didn't have any info at PAX.

is it still rooted in the d20 system

is it still the worst game system in the universe

    Mmmmmaybe.

They're cutting out a lot of the bullshit that would slowdown gameplay, like special grapple rules and stuff, as well as making the classes more 'fun' and capable of doing some neat things. For example, a wizard that runs out of his daily spells will still have some kind of cool 'arcane blast' thing he can use X times a day so he's not just 'guy with shitty HP and a staff' when he runs out of spells.

As well as steamlining combat considerably.

oh they're making it even faster and more accessible to casual players?

because that's part of why 3rd edition is so crap

there needs to be a balance between simplicity and attention to detail

You just miss THAC0, don't you?

Yeah, because I sure do love having to sit down and do the equivalents of filing my tax returns just to be able to stat a goddamned dragon.

Seriously, I can't wait for 4th edition. Simplicity is a good thing.

thac0 is simple if you don't have a mental handicap

and no, that's still not what i'm talking about (2nd edition d&d was a terrible game system as well)

man, what I'd like to see is a game set in a fantasy world with a healthy dose of steamtech, lots of great gnomish culture throughout the setting

nice easy combat system, not two hundred pages detailing every fucking stupid thing you gotta roll dice on. Accessibility while addressing detail but not drowning you in it.

character creation that isn't nearly as much about numbers and stats as it is about generating a character, about using a character's backstory as honest-to-god traits and attributes, sort of how Spirit of the Century does it

a unique system of party interaction - more than just the "okay we got a healer and a tank and a wizard, we're good" bullshit. Methods to actually have one person's skills and traits play off of the rest of the party's attributes to allow and encourage better inter-party development and interaction.

That's what I'd like to play.

I've played ebberon, and I've played heaps of shadowrun

    and no

    that's not what I meant

ebberon's style... I just can't like it. I've tried, and it doesn't work for me. SOmething about it is all kinds of fucked up and rubs me the wrong way.

And shadowrun is far, far too stats-based and numbers-driven for what I have in mind. Seriously, everybody needs to try Spirit of the Century. It certainly has its problems, but it is such an amazingly different way to go about building characters and their interaction with each other and the environment, it really needs to be adopted by more systems.

I've always been partial to the flexibility of GURPS. Not strong on campaign settings but the beauty of GURPS is that you can do any kind of setting you want with it and the rules are pretty scalable so you can adopt optional rules that make combat more complex and more detailed, or you can just say fuck it and keep it fast and loose.

SotC was a lot of fun, it's just we took too much time (well, rather, we didn't have enough time) on character creation and a full out game.

    But it was good times.

It wouldn't be that much work.

Hell, you could use the Eberron setting as a basis for SotC game, as both had major conflicts in each settings respective past, and Eberron (yes, I know you said you don't like it) is intended to have a bit of a pulp feel to it.

Rather than describing your first pulp novel, describe the first handful of adventures you went on to get your attributes and the like.
