Is the economy in X3 similar to X2 with reguards to energy cells? In X2 you made the most money selling the most basic of resources, the energy cell. Thats not supposed to be how it happens with a real economy.

Edit: and are there the purple triangle ships from X2?

Yeah I'd like to know this too. The upside down ecomony was one of the main things I wanted fixed, but I didn't get far enough into X3 to find out how the new economy works. Setting up stations and loops and traders was my favourite bit of X2.

While I'm sure you're the king of best at X3, the fact is that the starter buster has buttfuck nothing for shields, and a single shot from an AHEPT will knock it for six. My advice to anyone in less than an M3 is, if you see a Nova, run the fuck the other way.

Also in the event you capture a pirate nova, sell it and get a real one. Pirate Novas blow ass compared to the real thing.

i've fought novas in a buster as well, i mean every once in awhile shit goes wrong and you'll get nailed by the HEPT and it will sting like a bitch but its not too hard to avoid...

also the pirate novas are the same thing as ones you buy except they arent outfitted, just take it to place to upgrade it and it will be the same thing

(although i normally sell all my pirate ships so i can buy lots of trader ships D: )

Oy, I'm finding it harder to capture ships now than the last time I played it. I tried taking on a bunch of harriers, but none of them would surrender, and although I won, I lost like 36k for 4% repairs. I also downed a Nova, but I didn't really get anything out of it. Poo poo.

I have this game, my computer runs it quite well but I got lost in the campaign missions. There comes a point where you need to make a "Jump" or something, but you don't actually have the resources on board to power the jump... nor are there any available nearby.

Unfortunately I have not the time required to bask in it's glory.

When you install the game, it doesn't install with Starforce. Starforce is only installed once you fire up the game for the first time. If you patch it before you do that, you shouldn't have to worry about Starforce.

I might have to get into this game again. Seeing those screenshots makes me want to play again...

No, they aren't. A pirate Nova's top speed (fully outfitted) is much lower, either 93 or 97 compared to 120 for an Argon Nova

Ok, so I got it all installed fine and fired it up, and I immediately noticed that even though I picked my joystick as the input in the installer, it is in fact NOT using the joystick. I tried to change the settings to use it in the tutorial, but could not figure out how. I don't see anywhere to disable kbam/enable joystick, and even stranger, when I tried to create a new 'control profile', I couldn't enter my name because every letter I pressed, it wrote like 6 times in a row, and would add new letters without me hitting keys. I messed with the settings in other places and found that I could only turn volume UP, not down. And, when I open the launcher, it says version 2.0.02 as it should, but once the actual game starts, it says 1.0 next to the menu options.

So, uh - anybody else have these issues? Is the game not actually updated?

edit:: Yeah, upon looking further, it seems I got the 2.0.01 -> 2.0.02 patch, as opposed to the 1.0 -> 2.0.02 patch. Ignore me.

well for my first real time trying to play this game i installed the eXtend mod. not sure if this is a good or bad decision, but i figure why not add a ton of shit to the game. i'm not real sure how i want to start out making some funds, so the plan is to head to pirate space and kill/capture some rats.

It's worth mentioning that you can only start new games with XTM though. Last I checked anyway. I remember cursing about losing all my stations and wessels from having to start all over. Then I ended up reformating soon after so I never did get to see the dysons sphere.

more confused than the norm though? i know it adds a lot of sectors/ships and some new features (ship building etc), but would that really make a custom game harder? considering i don't have a previous run through to base it on?

my attempts at killing pirates were totally and utterly unsuccessful. playing a custom game i have a buster + 6 guns and 1000 creds. the pirates always seemed grouped in 4s and they out maneuvered me like crazy. i tried one of the named custom games too, explorer i believe. that started me out in a discoverer + 4 guns and a lot more money. this ship was awesomely fast, but when i went into combat i died in literally one hit... i really don't feel like trading with 1000 creds to try to work up for a better ship, seems like thats not enough seed money at all. i've been reading over guides from the egosoft forums but any more firsthand PA tips would be nice.

i'm not opposed to taking out the Xtend mod if its possibly making things more difficult.

Well I mean I won't be able to help you as much because I won't know the ships or sectors. Also, ship building is a part of the vanilla game and probably works differently in Xtended.

A discoverer is an M5 class, or scout ship. It's buttfuck useless in combat. The buster is a much better bet. Practise flying around, and go for smaller groups, staying close to the gate. Also, pick up a jump drive in Home Of Light and some energy cells, and jump out if you're in trouble. Try and pick small groups that DON'T CONTAIN PIRATE NOVAS. Once you get used to things, Pirate Falcons will be your favourite prey, they're slow, don't have rear turrets (standard falcons do) and are worth a ton if you capture one.

GUIDE TO SHIPS FOR BEING BEST

M5 - Scout ship. Very fast, terrible in combat. Most M5s are incapable of damaging an M5 enough to take down its shields before they recharge. They use IREs, typically. Examples: Discoverer, Harrier, Jaguar (faster non racing ship in the game ) Xenon N

M4 - Interceptor. Fast enough to engage M5s and give M3s the run around, but relatively lightly shielded. Good all purpose ships, but flying skill required because you have very little leeway. Normally use BPACs. Examples - Buster, Xenon M uh, some others (I don't fly M4s)

M3 - Fighter ship. Slow, well shielded ships meant solely for fighting. This is the mainstay ship and you should upgrade to one when you can. These are the first ships to have rear turrets, which I personally outfit with mass drivers if available. Don't attack a ship with a rear turret unless you're in an M3 yourself or can strafe. These use AHEPTs, and can normally take out a smaller ship in one volley. Maneouvering into that volley can be tough though, and you will hate harriers. Most M3s can carry disruptors (awesome anti scout missiles) and hammerheads (ludicrously powerful bombs that are basically impossible to use). Examples - Falcon, Nova, Xenon L,

M6 - Corvette. Very difficult to fly, a lot weaker than in X2 (where they were apparently super broken). A lot of fire power, a lot of shielding (compensating for size), a lot of turrets (especially the Centaur), big generators and look cool. Fairly slow (normally a little slower than a fighter) and hard to maneouver. These are anti capital ship, and if you get them into trouble with fighters you could potentially get fucked up. Pretty much a prestige ship. Normally use AHEPTs or beta weapons in general, the Split dragon can use alpha PPCs. The Dragon and Centaur are IMO the best M6s. Examples - Osprey, Dragon, Xenon P

M2 - Destroyer. Big hard bastards. Tons of power, tons of turrets, tons of shields. Only really going to get taken out by other capital ships. Can load a lot of different weapons, typically gamma/beta PPCs and flak. If you don't have flak, you better have escorts, because PPCs aren't hitting shit. Examples - Titan, Ray, Python

M1 - Carriers. Big, considerably less hard bastards. Carry sixty odd fighters and have big guns and shields, but not nearly enough to take out an M2 unless you rock. M1s guard M2s from fighters, M2s guard M1s from capital ships. Similar weapons to M2, but less turrets, less options and smaller generators. Examples - Colossus, Zeus

TL - Big fuck off transport ship. Can't do shit in a fight (will get destroyed QUICKLY by real capital ships), can carry stations and 5-10 escorts. My favourite ships. Examples - Mammoth, Orca, Elephant (good in a scrap). Once you can afford one of these, you're on your way as a trader.

TS - Small transport. Ferries shit around. Very slow and very bad in a fight. Keep them in safe areas and don't fly them yourself. Can be outfitted with trade software 3 to become automatic traders in one sector (ST) and then level up to multiple sectors (UT). The mainstay of most trading companies.

TP - Decoration. Don't buy one.

M7 - Luxury Yacht. Only one exists. Huge shields, decent handling and speed, incredible weapons, tons of PSG turrets, can dock two (!) ships. Corvette sized. Basically cheating.

    Races and their ships

Argon - All rounders. Good for the first of each kind of ship. TL has largest capacity and smallest hanger. M6 has most turrets. M2 relatively weak (only beta PPCs up front) and can't equip beta flak, but still awesome. M1 has largest hangar. Most ships above M3 have mass drivers. Arguably the best M3.

Split - FAST. Big weapons. Big generators. Small shields. Don't fly these unless you're really good. Experts tend to favour their M3 and M6. Their M2 is a fucking beast and has beta flak. Even the Elephant can fight.

Paranid - Notable for tiny cargo space and the use of PSGs. The Odysseus is the only ship that can equip Gamma PSGs, which are a thing to behold. Somewhat impractical in friendly sectors

Teladi - Slow, ugly, big. Big shields. BIG fucking shields. Cheap. Pirates tend to use Teladi gear because the Teladi are unscrupulous. Their M2, the Phoenix, has a 10 gig shield and beta flak and is a complete arse to take down. Huge though. Ridiculously huge. Their ships all look like Red Dwarf.

Boron - Awesome looking ships, pretty good all round (I don't fly them). AWESOME looking. Their M2 can't equip flak but can equip gamma PPCs in every turret, making it amazing out of sector. AWESOME looking.

    Weapons

Alpha is weakest and fastest, Beta slower and stronger, Gamma slowest and strongest

IREs - Scout weapons. Shit. Basically instant hit, so good for missile turrets.

PACs - Interceptor weapons. Good mixture of speed and power, good for anti-fighter turrets on Destroyers

HEPTs - Stronger weapons, normally seen on fighters and up. Very strong, slow, use a lot of energy. A volley of AHEPTS will take out an M4 or M5 in a second IF you can hit them. BHEPTS are corvette weapons, and so slow that only in very close range or against capital ships are they useful. I've used them anti fighter though, they take shit out fast.

PSGs - \Area affect weapons, fires a big cone of killing stuff. Used mainly by Paranids, very strong and amazingly destructive on multiple turrets, but unuseable in friendly sectors.

PPCs - Big fuck off snowballs that kill shit. YOU WILL NOT HIT FIGHTERS WITH THESE. EVER. Anti capital ship weapon. Only equippable on capital ships, one TL and one corvette. Each GPPC costs the same as an M3 ship.

is there any (dis)advantages to starting the plot game and then just not advancing the plot til you feel like it? (besides the starting bonus $ and ships that quickstart provide) i assume just entering certain areas of space will trigger events and shit.

No disadvantages at all. If you finish the plot you get some nice rep bonuses, but there's no real advantage to doing it or not doing it. Regrettably, you don't use your own ship for most of the missions anyway.

from what i read you need to knock out the shields, hurt the hull somewhat, then hope they bail. evidently the latest version of the game added a 'courage' factor to the npcs which randomizes the bail rate a bit.

Ok so i'm having a really weird problem with sound.

Whenever i'm on comm with people, or whenever that little box appears at the top right, I am not hearing the voice of the person.

What happens is that the box pops up, I see their mouth moving, and after about 3 seconds the sound will pick up right in the middle of the sentence.

It's even worse when theres quick dialogue, then the voice doesnt sound at all.

    This is incredibly annoying.

It's basically random. Take out their shields and slowly damage their hull. Some people use IREs to whittle them away, but you have to be in a fairly safe situation to do that. Sometimes you'll just get three guys bail at once, and then go forever without a capture. Getting the fucking ship out of there is the hardest part, until you have a TL to use as storage.

Also that post above took so long to type that not reading it is an infractionable offence for everyone on the forums. There will be a quiz.

Ok, apparently my controls are like hella fucked up. It seems to think that holding a button means you're hitting it 50 million times in a row. If i hit escape to enter the menu, it flickers back and forth. My joystick controls only work sometimes, and I can't figure out how to make them work all the time. The throttle control is not actually the throttle, but a secondary lever on the throttle, and I can't reassign it. The missile launcher says hit the button to select a target and hold to fire, but holding it just makes it cycle through all the targets.

Has anybody else had similar issues? Am I the only one with these? I mean, I really want to use my badass joystick, but should I just use the mouse?
