And I think what makes 5E go faster that bogged down 4E was the power bloat. That's one reason I really liked Essentials and wish they continued along that path, but history is history. I agree, if we hit, combat is quick, but needing 11-12s to hit instead of 6s or 7s just means more misses. But again, understandable given that healing is less frequent in this edition.
Out of the corner of his eye, Ay notices the goblin break free and quickly attempt to take off. However, Ay hasn't calmed down, yet. He's tired of being led into ambushes and traps, and he's not about to let a messenger get away to call in more reinforcements.
He makes a beeline for the escaping goblin, his superior speed making it easy enough to catch up to the creature.

Swinging his staff, the crafty creature manages to duck low, but only angers Ay more. He unleashes a flurry of attacks at the creature. His anger blinding him, though, his punches and kicks only meet air! The creature is free to flee!
"One is getting away," Ay shouts back to the others.

I dunno. I mean, I think I'm the only one that has hit so far, besides Philo's table push? And that's probably only because I swung 9 times so far (9 swings to get I think 3 hits?). I think this fight could easy swing (no pun intended!) either direction if one side was hitting.

Holding his ground, Dural alters his stance to try and avoid the makeshift cover that the room seems to be littered with. Swinging low, he brings his hammer up and around, smashing into the unprotected side of the bugbear in front of him. As soon as it connects, the room brightens in a flash, as his hammer pulses white divine radiance that sears and burns the flesh of the evil creature.
Attack: Bugbear again.
Bonus Action: Divine Smite using up a 1st level spell slot since I finally hit it!

Dural grunts and groans under the weight of the strike that crunched down upon his shoulder, but his resolve is a bit more sturdy than a goblin's arm, and his incantation around Ay remains in place.
Barran's hasty arrow catches the unaware goblin between the shoulderblades, and the stricken creature sprawls on the floor inches away from turning a corner and out of our narrative entirely.
Barran tries to find something witty to say involving the word "Bree-yark," but the moment soon passes and he gives up.
Concentration! Thanks for making the roll, I had completely forgot about your spell, Aegis. Oh, and that Goblin is quite dead. Its hard to run for help with a crossbow bolt sticking out of your brain.
It seems Geth decided to finally give us some dice back. Maybe he got tired of the Swing Party as Bursar so nicely put it!
Instinctively, Ay dodges to the side as Barran's bolt stuns and ultimately deals with the fleeing goblin. As it hits the floor, Ay gives it a quick kick to make sure it isn't moving before turning back to the group. The deafening silence of whiffs has retreated, the sounds of clashing blades and crunching bones replacing it. Seeing the dwarf having knocked the bugbear to it's knee, Ay charges in. In a sweeping motion, he catches the bugbears other leg behind its knee, sending it to the groud and it's wickedly spiked Morningstar soaring into the air. With a swift downward kick to it's gut, the creature jerks upright just in time to catch the morningstar squarely in it's head. I don't see him getting up from that, Ay thinks to himself. Seeing the hobgoblins' eyes darting about, Ay slides over the nearby table and works his way between them and the door they entered from.

Action: Attack Bugbear
Move/Minor: If Bugbear is alive, Martial Arts to attack again. Stay still if it is still alive. If I kill Bugbear, slide over table at E2 and move to D3 (20 feet). My understanding of AOOs is that should not provoke since I haven't left the reach of anything. Once there, attack Hobgoblin 3 if I haven't already used Martial Arts. If the leaping over the sliding over the table requires any check, please let me know @Steelhawk .

The Hobs, seeing their bruiser go down, redouble their efforts against the Paladin...hoping to at least cause some damage before they too fall prey to pesky Adventurers. The #1 cause of death of dungeon dwelling creatures since time immemorial...alas.

Yeah, I did a tally earlier. Up to Steelhawk's last post, there were 35 attacks, not including Philo's table push and your Reflex Save attacks. Out of that 35, 11 were hits, with about 7 of those happening in a row in the last round... so there was a spot in there where we had like 15 or so misses in a row! Geth is not a generous god.

Whirling around, the dwarf follows through with his hammer swing on the giant bugbear, hoping that the good fortune he had with that one strike would continue and quickly end this goblin threat.
Attack: The not asleep Hobgoblin.
minion, roll 1d20+4 for Attack
minion, roll 1d8+2 for Damage
The lone remaining Hobgoblin darts his eyes back and forth between his opponents, seeking a way out of this situation. Deciding, he swings wildly with his sword, rocking Philo and Dural back on their heels and allowing the Hobgoblin to withdraw from their striking distance before turning and disappearing down the hallway to the west.
And see this fellow stride out from the kitchen...replace the axe in his hands with a heavy cast iron frying pan and a long chain affixed to his leg.
"I'll have words wit' whoever don't like me cooking. Words, I tell ye!....eh? Youse ain't no Goblins...you the ones responsible fer all the racket in me dining room? Angus Steinrut at yer service....who might you be?
Yeah, so...we'll just assume that the Hobgoblin on fire didn't make it, despite his 2 remaining HP, and move on...
What do you guys do about this new development?

Dural recovers his footing from the feint by the Hobgoblin and is about to follow him down the hallway when he winces at the loud clanging noise coming from the cook. He then pauses as he takes in the strange sight that walks into view, lowering his weapon and Findul slightly. "Yer dining' room be infested with Goblins and worse," he says as he makes his way over to one of the few surviving tables, and smashes the hammer down onto one of the plates that had a particularly large piece of Carp in it, "...Just makin' sure it be dead." He then clears his throat, "In any event, Angus? Ye aren't seemingly around 'ere. Ye happen to know an Umpold back at the tavern? Dwarf, likes his drink, grumpy...excessively so?"
