The best part of Steel Phalanx, and I say this as an Aleph player who finds them super boring, is that with their year of interminable character releases; including characters they had to make up and add to the rules in order to release, they never got a fucking Thorakitai box. That is a core element of the faction with seven distinct profiles, and they have three models from a starter set.
I've been waiting for them to expand OSS because I really like their stuff, and if the new units are more alonge the Deva, Naga, Danavas and Asura lines I'll happily make a 300pt OSS list, but I would not begrudge Steel Phallus a Thorakitai box.
I really like the Ayyar. I was hoping I'd like the sculpt because it's a unit I really want to try. The Shikame is something I've wanted to add to my Yu Jing since I saw the profile and I really like the dossier art. The Danavas looks amazing, and the actual sculpt is nice. Interesting that there's two heads on the Dossier art. Maybe a blister of 2? I was pleasantly surprised when CB did 2 model blisters with the Kaauri Sentinels. I liked that format and was sad when they stopped it in favour of single model blisters or boxes. Major Lunah is pretty great. Really nice dynamic sculpt, which I'm glad CB have been getting back in to. Mercenary with a Viral Sniper is interesting, and she's definitely Haqqislam in origin - her leg armour and visor are distinctly Haqqislam.
I've never really had a problem with the Steel Phalanx focus, because the alternative was Steel Phalanx missing models and OSS missing models. I'd rather have Aleph getting models, and Steel Phalanx being finished out personally.
Thorakitai are annoying, but that really seems to be a function of them not being happy with the Thorakitai profile or sculpt. With how crazy CB has been about basing models on popular culture, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the intent is to base the Thorakitai sculpts off the characters in the GitS movie, or already sculpted them and are just waiting until the movie is out.

Thinks I did not expect to happen at Adepticon - to walk into the Corvus Belli booth, and have Angel Giraldez start pumping my hand. I think it went over his head when I asked, "I'm sorry, did you think I was someone who mattered?"

From what I've heard about the CB staff, they're all super friendly.
Warsenal showed off some amazing terrain - their new Alcazaba line. They've done the previous gencon exclusive Studio B, which seems like is was a test peice for the range. they then showed the Caravansary, but not they've got what looks like the whole range up.
They also showed their Lo Pans Noodle House.
It still amazes me how much official terrain is out there and how detailed they're making terrain with MDF. Early MDF terrain was cheap and simple stuff, basically small or large boxes with etched detail. Now we're getting stuff like this.
Honestly, while it adds to the game's cost a whole bunch, Infinity's focus on dense terrain boards and the range of urban landscapes for it are a big pull for the game.
If I had infinite time and money there's a bunch of like, big theme boards that I'd just want to make to capture the setting more than anything else.

Yeah, one of the guys in our group has a full MAS board on their District 5 mat, fully painted. A lucky few people in our league got to play on that and had a blast every time. Everyone else played on normal grass boards with more than usual 40k type terrain and it's just not the same.
Most of their Infinity terrain is out of action for repairs. Apparently people like to put their enormous miniatures cases on tables and use them as a sort of cow catcher to shift terrain out of the way to give them room. Unfortunately for MDF terrain, it catches on the table and snaps various walls and such. Since that's happened they've now got a rule of no miniatures cases on the gaming tables.
One I'd love to do would be an Imperial service base of operations: The edges of the board (about 6 to 10 inches) are various YJ slums, businesses and buildings. The rest is taken up by an elevated plateau containing the installation. A classic blend of various Asian architecture, lush gardens and even a small set of ponds obscure the fact that every single interior functions as either living quaters for The Imperial Service, holding cells for their prisoners or other such things. The perfect image of the power of the state above the people. Beautiful provided you don't look too deep. The south side of the board has an elevated railway line connected to the plateau and the buildings in the city are such that jumping onto it (or using one of the few service ladders) can be done easily after deployment.
Other than that like, a Vaudeville Strip (maybe with an Aristeia arena as the primary terrain piece) would be a rad way to show off the weirder bits of the setting.

All right, so with Adepticon out of the way, I'm an Infinity player now. With a PanO starting base of Knauf and a fusilier, and looking at the Order Militant, would anyone have recommendations for a competent 100-150 point base?
Well, Fusiliers are less available in the Military Orders, and Knauf is Sectoral only. But if you take regular PanO you can have them all, so that's definitely an option for you. Any particular military orders minis you like?

That was one question I had (since I now need to actually read the rules and not just pick them up by the osmosis of watching people play) - Would going Military Order preclude Knauf, or do they still count as a general human faction?
The problem from jump right in to the deep end.

General human armies are the generic lists, so Pan Oceania.
A sectorial is a different army list that limits or expands the availability of certain troops - sometimes taking them entirely from out of faction, adds linked teams, and essentially creates a theme, both aesthetically and through gameplay. As a Military Order list, you will have a lot higher access to Order Sergeants and Knights, and much reduced or entirely removed access to almost everything else. That's what a sectorial does.
Knauf, as a mercenary, is only available to generic human armies. So if you want to use him actually as Knauf, you'd have to play Pan Oceania rather than Military Orders.
That said, he'd make a fine proxy for a Specialist order Sergeant with Multi Sniper Rifle.
Military Orders: Big beefy boys, lots of courage. Pick them if you want rad space knights and all that jazz. Also Joan of Arc fucking rules.
Shock Army of Acontecimento: A bunch of the weirder Pan-O stuff. Honestly I didn't look at them much because I didn't like them.
It's fun to be in the N C A: The Neo Terran Capitaline Army are the richest boys in the Human Sphere. They have all the best toys, all the biggest guns and troops that have earned the right to use them. This translates into kinda the most Pan-O of Pan-O armies. Good shooters with good equipment that win fire fights. They have a range of toys from a link team with throwable mines to a TO camo, rocket launcher wielding, BS15, power armoured asshole who could probably be happily argued to be one of the best overwatch pieces in the game.
Shockingly my vote is for the NCA. Especially if you're new. Military Orders are pretty damn limited last I checked. Though honestly the best advice anyone can give you is to pick models you think look cool or which have rules you think would be fun to use. You wanna lead heroic charges? Bring a pain train 5 HI Military Orders link team. You want to fuck around with remotes? Field a robo army of the NCA's finest.
For sectorial vs non sectorial it's up to you. If you want a wide variety of units go vanilla. If you want a more thematic list and to play with link teams (which are fire teams of 2-5 models that move together) then pick a sectorial you like the flavour of.
Or just play Nomads. The true power of the Human Sphere :rotate:

Aconticimento are jungle fighters. The planet is a bread basket world which is massively dense with vegetation. They've got a mix of light and medium infantry that do the heavy lifting, suppored by limited heavy infantry. They get some out of faction help in the form of the Aleph units Nagas, Drakios and Scylla, the background there being those units train with the Aconticimento regulars
My friend plays them, they seem like a fun non-standard PanO list. But that's the rub - they're very non standard compared to what PanO is known for.

And I didn't think about using Knauf as a proxy sniper. That's certainly an option if I want to go Order.

You'll find the community is pretty happy with proxying. So much goes on anyway due to the amount of profiles that don't have models that it's just kind of expected that there will be some proxying.

So in addition to getting Fat Yuan Yuans, we also get a set of hilarious scenarios to use them in. They use the joke profile. Yuan Yuans smoke grenades are replaced by beer cans (stun grenades), and they have the heavyweight rule.

Just a note, something I didn't pick up on immediately when I started playing.
The power of vanilla lists is that you get access to the best models your army has, while in sectorials you only get roughly a third of the entire list, minus most mercs. The trade off is that you get to run multiples of some models (not as big a deal as it is in other mini games), and you get link teams.
Link teams basically reward you for taking a bunch of a single unit, which is normally bad in Infinity. In games like Warmahordes and Warhammer, being able to take an infinite number of a model/unit can be overpowered, or even completely break the game. With infinity, because of its order-based action economy, having two or three of the same dude simply means you have a backup in case one of them dies (in most cases).
Most armies have access to pretty much everything every other army has; some armies have tons of access to a particular ability (camo, hacking devices), and others can have very limited access, but generally everyone has everything. Now, when you start cutting two thirds of your options out, that stops being true.
Taking Nomads, for example, in the vanilla army I can get a WIP 15 HD+ for 24 points, and a TO Camo specialist minelayer for 32 points. If I take the Bakunin sectorial, I'm limited to a WIP 14 HD+ for 32 points, and no access to TO camo. If I went instead for Corregidor, I couldn't get either!
That's not to say that sectorials aren't good/great/better. Link teams give you more order economy through being able to move multiple models with one action (allowing you to have a larger number of models up field than your opponent), or by adding burst and BS to your attacks. Fusilier links with a Multi Sniper can be terrifying, BS18, B3 DA ammo for 53 points isn't bad at all.
Also, be careful buying multiples of the same model. If you end up not liking your sectorial, you might wind up with five of something you might not want to use one of.

About buying multiples of the same model, I've been playing for about 7 years now and I've done that once, and only plan on doing it once more. First was ordering an individual Sekban AP rifle from someone that does split boxes, and the other will be a Govad Rifle from the same person. This is purely because for those two units, across their linked team boxes and individual blister, they give more special weapons than I'm comfortable running in a Govad linked team, and in the case of Sekbans, I don't really like the universal proxy model.
Outside of that, I run sectorials within the limit of what models are available and I do fine. Sure, I'd love to run 2 Barids or 2 Farzans in Hassassin Barham. I'd love to run 2 Al Hawwa Forward Observers/Hackers in Qapu Khalki. But they only have a single model for each of those released so I just make do using a single model, and still do absolutely fine in games.

I'm working from the army phone app, so please bear with me if things are a little messy.
I'm thinking the best idea is start with the PanO starter box. That gives me:
3x Fusiliers with combi rifles (so 4 total)
Nisse w/Sniper rifle
Akali Commando w/ combi rifle
Orc w/ multi rifle
Knauf
If I add to that what I think is cool and useful-
Fusilier w/ missile launcher
Fusilier w/ HMG
Jeanne dArc-mobility armor
- how do I look in terms of putting together a 150ish list without too many glaring weaknesses? Is the lack of medics or hackers going to be an issue? I heard PanO has only one model with ZeroV smoke, but I haven't been able to find which one yet.
All comments, criticism, and advice is appreciated!

The starter set comes in at 126+ points depending on whether you make any of your Fusiliers a specialist (if you want a medic, you could upgrade a Fusilier).
At 150 points, I don't think there is a way to actually fit Joan with mobility armour with the 2 Fusiliers armed with an HMG and ML as that is 3.5 SWC (you are allowed 1 SWC per 50 points). The same is also true of the Nisse (or Knauf) and 2 Fusiliers, which comes out as 4 SWC.
You're probably pushing things trying to fit both the Nisse sniper and Knauf in the same list in a low point list (I'd personally favour the Nisse over Knauf).
I guess it ultimately depends what your heart is set on playing with, and what you'd be happy in dropping until you played larger point games.
Personally speaking, if I were starting PanO, I'd buy the starter set, and then the Auxilia boxed set, as the latter are nice cheaper specialists that can fit in most PanO lists.
Honestly if those are the list of models you wanna take to start with I'd run Joan as the non mobility armour version to start with so you can get that sweet, sweet SWC bonus. Then you can wind up with something like this:
Which would easily be completed by either dropping a Fusilier for an Akali (which is kinda bad because of a lack of orders, even for 150 points) or, in a more sensible option with the Auxilia's. Which would look like:
Which actually looks like a really fun, Pan-O ass force! You've got a BS15 HI, a Multi sniper, a HMG and an Auxilia in there for fancy toys and they're backed up by three of the group being specialists.
And yeah, if I were to reccomend 'default' purchases for Pan-O the Support box (doc+engy+2 helper bots), Auxilia and the Fusilier Box would all be up there. Probably followed by the Bulleteer Armbots because holy shit those things are annoying and cost effective.

So my friend and I are looking into playing this. I really want to play something where I can throw out some cool looking mechs. Nomads and Yu Jing look cool for that so I will probably go with one of those.
What do I need for this and generally how much do I need to spend to get a functioning army going?

I guess it ultimately depends what your heart is set on playing with,
Fortunately, my heart isn't set on anything, except using the two models I already own. XD I chose Mobility Armor Joan because I liked the model better.
I really like that last list... but so many good choices! Now I see just how hard it is to just, 'build one little force and that's it!"
If you want to actually play with TAGs then Nomads are likely the best faction for that. They have bargain basement good deal TAGs like the Gecko and Iguana, to the Lizard with one of the few heavy grenade launchers in the game (in a faction with hacking device plus for spotting tricks), to the salamander with a giant fuck off rail gun. For Yu Jing, TAGs are usually a bit harder to justify, but the Japanese Sectorial Army finds it really easy to find a use for the O-Yori due to their shitty access to heavy machineguns (edit: it is also comes in at a cheap price point, is the only TAG with martial arts that let it sneak to avoid hackers and fight competently against close combat units that usually rodeo kill TAGs if they get close. Plus it comes with two adorable high explosive robot kolas that suicide bomb anything that gets too close because Japan).
If you want to play with super nasty killer drones or other robot stuff, then Yu Jing over Nomads. The Nomad REMs are alright in the right list, but the Yu Jing ones are bullshit in most lists. Yu Jing also has robot heavy infantry, such as the robot that is a transformer that can turn into a tiger (it can sneak 8 inches per order which is super obnoxious when it can combo with smoke clouds), and JSA can field a link team of objective capturing robot terminator geisha that have every weapon under the sun built into them.
Ballpark for getting into Infinity is around $150 to $200 for a full sized list unless you are super inefficient. Somewhere around 10-15 models. Geckos are kind of inefficient dollar wise, but if you want a TAG you really can't do worse as a newbie. Geckos are really super durable up-jumped heavy infantry that want to bully lighter infantry, than a walking tank (and TAGs operating more like a tank require a lot of finesse to use compared to just a super durable heavy infantry). Plus when your Gecko gets disabled, the pilot gets out and starts shooting things with dual assault pistols (dual assault pistols are REALLY scary at close range).

Well now, lets not be hasty now... Nomads are the other faction with access to explosive robot koalas. Plus they have Uberfallkommandos that are berserker weaponized close combat furries (yes furries, as in a pack of cat girls and foxboys that run screaming into close combat). Then there are the cyberpunk AI hating battle nuns. Oh yea, and the genetically engineered monkey boy with a tail infiltrating commando with super climb and super jump. Their Interventor hackers (best hackers in the game) can deploy fast pandas that are robot panda weponized wi-fi nodes.
If JSA is space Japan, then Nomads are space 4chan. Jury is still out on which one is weirder.
If you're picking between Yu Jing and Nomads the main playstyle difference is whether you want a wider, more fragile toolbox (Nomads) or a bunch of solid troops that do one job well.
Also UberfallKommando are still my favourite units. They're super fun and so cheap you can put them in pretty much any Nomad/Bakunin army.

You don't need the core rulebook. PDF is free online, plus the free online armybuilder has all the stats. Plus there is a wiki with all the rules (I literally look up rules during games by saying "OK Google Infinity the game suppression fire").
Rulebook is a nice reference, and comes with a background material book.

How does the Gecko work as far as unit cost? Are thete two models involved? I went onto the online army builder and there is a 53 and 54 option with a different load out for each. If it is two models does the 53 or 54 cover the whole squad or would it be 106/108 for the squad?

My friend plays them, they seem like a fun non-standard PanO list. But that's the rub - they're very non standard compared to what PanO is known for.
And I didn't think about using Knauf as a proxy sniper. That's certainly an option if I want to go Order.

What do I need for this and generally how much do I need to spend to get a functioning army going?

I really like that last list... but so many good choices! Now I see just how hard it is to just, 'build one little force and that's it!"
Nomads sound really cool but Yu Jing sound way cooler with that ridiculousness. I think I will be going with that army for now. Terminator geisha and explosivie robot koalas sold me on it.
Thanks a lot for the descriptions. It has been really helpful. Since I am doing Yu Jing now and my friend is doing Haqqislam we are gonna get that Operation: Red Veil battlepack.

Also UberfallKommando are still my favourite units. They're super fun and so cheap you can put them in pretty much any Nomad/Bakunin army.
Both sound really fun though.

Rulebook is a nice reference, and comes with a background material book.
But the wiki is still the easiest way for me to look up a rule
But if you're just starting out being able to download the full ruleset legally for free is a massive boon and big bit of wallet relief.
