    And worse, you can pick up some very poor betting habits. You play how you practice, and free poker leads to cavalier betting, which is a recipe for disaster in "real" poker.

    But just playing in play money tournaments is useless.

    No. You play blackjack against the house, for example, and it is only a "rate of loss" game if you're playing it wrong. Also, while you don't play poker against the house (strictly speaking), they do take part of the pot.

    Basically what I'm saying is that you're right in implying that virtually all games result in a "rate of loss", no matter how you play them.

    The last poker game I played was 2 weeks ago, and that was a friendly cash game amongst poor friends.

    I bought in for $10, lost that, bought in for $5 more, ended up making $5 and getting my $10 back, so I left with $20. Towards the end though it was just me and one of my better friends and we were playing Follow the Queen, 7 Card Stud, In Between the Sheets, and a couple of others.

    Not bad, but I am looking forward to a bigger tournament coming up that some cops throw every couple of months.

    Lost $40 at the $2/4 Hold 'Em table. But those $40 lasted me 5 hours of talking with interesting folks and watching the uptight guys yell at the people who didn't know how to play.

    Worth it I think

    I made $2500 in a week playing $2.50/$5.00 pot limit Hold 'Em, would have been $4000 if some guy didn't hit a one outer against me on the river, was still a really good week though.
    Over the next two weeks I lost like $1200 on hands when I was >90% favorite.
