Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom announced

Ah, the classic game of setting bounties, allying with elves, slaying foul beasts, and listening to those irritating character voices has returned.

Not much info on it, but let's reminisce on the glories of Majesty I, one of the few truly unique games that was available in my elementary school book sale's videogame catalogs.

I hope the voice acting returns, myself.

I was going to make a thread about this but it slipped my mind. This game was cool and somewhat original.

Seems it should have a sequel before now.

What would be totally awesome is to make it a combo Majesty/Dungeon Keeper game with multiplayer.

You didn't control your heroes directly, either. You had to put bounties on unexplored land or monsters for your townsfolk to take advantage of.

so what was the original like?

Your heroes would be of various classes, some mutually exclusive (ie, you can't build both the buildings for Paladins and Warriors of Discord), gain levels, learn new skills, and behave in ways according to their intelligence and class.

If you built a market, smart warriors would stock up on healing potions before going out to adventure. Dumb ones would skip the first part. Some of the ranged heroes would try to stick behind a tanking hero when available.

It's hard to describe since there isn't really anything quite like it.

Majesty was such an awesome game. Especially with the excellent expansion.

What was especially cool was how each kind of hero had such a distinctive AI that was as much a factor in deciding what to build as their stats. EG: Thieves are the most strongly motivated by rewards but will not lift a finger for free. They will even attack your own buildings if an opponent puts a reward on them. Wizards are cowards but (once they hit level 7 or so) also unstoppable killing machines. Rangers like to explore unknown territory and will defend the town in a pinch. Warriors tend to stay close to home but are strongly motivated to defend.

Same for all the monsters. Different monsters prefer (not exclusively though) different kinds of targets. Fucking ratmen always go for the tax collectors and markets.

    OMG, I love this game.

A roomate and I decided to have a head to head LAN battle one weekend. After about 6 hours of continuous play (one single match), we decided to go out and get something to eat. We left our computers running because the game basically plays itself. When we returned later I found that I had a level 56 Mage on my team who was single handedly destroying his entire city. It was quite fun to watch, of course there was no way for my roomate to win at that point. I have no idea how he gained all those levels while we were gone.

Seriously. It was always such a pain in the ass to try to keep them alive long enough for them to become badasses.

I loved the original game, even if after a while it felt more like I was watching a game than playing it. I always enjoyed getting the necromancers and druids rather than the monks and priests, although the barbarians' Wrath of Krolm was fucking awesome. The last mission where you had to fight every single boss was just a never ending string of "KROOOLLLMMM" as my heroes raced around the map beating the hell out of everything.

I really think the key to making it more involved really would have been to make the RPG aspect of the heroes more in-depth.

Oh, man, first day purchase without a doubt. The original was so damn original and fun. I remember once a troll managed to kill one of my warriors with just a little shred of life left. One of my little wussy builder guys (gnomes, if I remember correctly) ran over and actually killed the troll. He was so happy, so proud of himself.

    Then the Ratman came.

In the expansion one of the later levels is so damn hard. You have to destroy 6 ancient barrows. Every time one dies there is an earthquake that damages all buildings and a wave of mobs. After 30 days a perma-earthquake begins that starts an unstoppople DOT on all your buildings until your palace dies and you lose.

Also, you can only hire 1 hero per guild but they start at level 9-13 or so.

Actually, on the hardest settings (especially with the much stronger monsters in the expansion) gnomes are the best demihuman choice. And they are the best choice in competetive multiplayer. You can get your base built and a good force of heroes going so much faster its insane. When the other guy who is holding out for dwarves is still building his first guild hall you'll have rangers, warriors, a market and a level 2 palace.

Not sure if I like the look they are giving the game, but it's nice to see it shape up. I was a big fan of the first and I'm sure I'll give this sequel a spin.
