Oh and on the age thing

I had an 18 year old babysitter last year when i was 13 except she was kind of not cute so i dunno if it counts as awesome.

i'm actually kind of embarrassed at my books list.

i haven't read for pleasure really since starting university.

That sucks. I would go crazy(crazier) if I wasn't able to escape into a book(or even a comic book) once in a while.

yeah, all through grade school and highschool i was the guy hiding books under his desk and reading during class. Then in uni i just spent so much time studying that my free time was spent on other things.

I mean, i read a little. mostly junk though. i kept up with the dark tower series, the sword of truth series, read a handfull of other stuff, some comics. Not nearly enough.

i actually spend hours each day reading, but it's all internet stuff and technical stuff.

One of the only good things about being sent to Iraq is that it affords me the oppertunity to catch up on books and comics that I have missed through out the previous year (The Anihilation Series was awsome)

I would date an older woman

    I would

I have a date with a younger woman this weekend. Easily the biggest differential downward I've ever been party to.

    How much younger

    what's the split here

    not terribly bad

    26 / 21

but still, relatively speaking, the youngest girl I've ever dated

Oh yeah, that's not terrible. My parents are about 4 years apart so I'm a bit more open minded about it.

ironically, based on what i know of her so far, she's probably the most mature girl i've ever gone out with

I'm not gonna lie to you guys, she lived in Idaho and I met her while I was fishing with my cousins.

I'm not proud of it and I didn't really like her but she was eighteen and I was thirteen and it seemed awesome at the time.

Hey, Pooro. Have you read anything good lately? I just finished the books WaM got me in Portland, and I'm pretty much out of stuff to read.

And if you suggest an anthology of 75-word postmodernist short fiction, I will fucking stab you in your eyes.

I keep meaning to ask you to recommend me stuff to read. I don't want to invest time in shit, so I wind up not reading lately.

I just picked up house of leaves at random from the library. Is it worth pursuing? So far I'm liking it.
    I waffle.

Sometimes I think it's ostentatious gimmickry, other times I think it's a pretty good book despite all that.

In my personal estimation, House of Leaves is checkers to Gravity's Rainbow's chess.

so recommended plan of action is to finish this, and get the heavy colour book next?

Having Gravity's Rainbow as your first foray into Pynchon is like learning to swim in the deep end of the pool, with lead weights around your ankles.

I did exactly this. I enjoyed, and felt like I understood most of the plot, but yeah, definitely some aspects of it that are still fuzzy. I'll read it again.

my father has been trying to get me to read this since childhood. I should really stop being stubborn about it.

If you'd like, I'd appreciate some recommendations. I'd love to start reading again, ut the thought of spending so much time with a book that winds up being shit is daunting.
Well, if you haven't read Catch-22, definitely read that next. Based on your other books, I think you'll enjoy it quite a bit.

And it's fucking hilarious, without being overly simplistic or goofy.

neat. can i come back to you after i'm done for more recommendations?

also: i saw an eeepc today running linux. God it was sexy. Only 400$. Tempting. So tempting.

Seriously, it's a pretty goddamned great book, and hard to find, but historically pretty fucking significant. It was frequently distributed by nazi soldiers during WWII and was banned in italy, under pain of death if caught reading it.

while, yeah, that does tend to be the core theme that runs through a lot of steinbeck's work, the way he paints the portraits of the poor and struggling underclasses is so brilliantly written that they really do deserve to be read. In Dubious Battle is a great fucking book about the worker's strikes during the great depression.

No. Absolutely not. I was cracking wise.

Steinbeck was a brilliant fucking author. Much like many of his generation, it wouldn't have mattered if everything he wrote was literally the same story about the same characters doing the same things; his writing is extraordinary, and even when his themes and plots overlap, it's more like seeing the same beautiful view from dozens of different angles than just seeing the same thing over and over.

    Exactly.

I mean, sure, you could reduce most of his plots down to a couple of words.

    Tortilla Flat: Mexicans in peril
The Pearl: Mexicans can't handle money
Grapes of Wrath: Poor people get dicked
In Dubious Battle: Poor people get dicked
Of Mice and Men: The retard gets dicked
Cannery Row: Lookit all these drunks
    Travels With Charley: I'm oooooooold
America and Americans: I'm so oooooooold

but, like episodes of House, it isn't about the formula as much as it is about the way it's unraveled
