So Gore Verbinski, the director of such films as Mouse Hunt, The Weatherman, and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, has signed on to direct a Bioshock adaptation to be written by John Logan who did The Aviator.
"Bioshock" takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he'd thought.

"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," said Verbinski. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.

Though no release date is even being targeted, Verbinski said he plans to start pre-production as soon as Logan's script is finished and approved by all involved.

Apparently it'll be R-rated, and he also might be doing a Portal movie(?)

And if anyone thinks this'll turn into a Halo, well...
Variety wrote:
"Bioshock" publisher Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the pic. It's believed to be the biggest videogame-to-movie deal since 2005, when U and Fox signed onto the since aborted "Halo" pic, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%.

Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick said the "state of the art" deal is structured so that "Bioshock" won't end up in turnaround like "Halo," which is back with Microsoft.

    made me so mad

    that's it guys.

we're doing it "SE++ presents Eternal Darkness"

yeah he does, but his schedule keeps getting busier so he may have to detach himself from the movie at some point. I'm not sure if Bloomkamp is still attached as director either.

the problem with video game movies is that there have been so few good ones. the directors look at the game and think hey this sold millions of copies lets make it a movie. but once they get down to it they are unable to capture the essence of the game and you end up with something like Doom (had some unique cinimatography but pretty bland over all) or Resident Evil(not a bad movie series but to far from the game). The only one I really enjoyed and it could just be nostalgic value was the Super Mario Brothers Movie (despite being so far gone from the game)

I'm thinking that too. I'm not sure how far they could take "woman running around walking through things completely alone."

Whilst it'd be neat having glaDOS and seeing her on the big screen, I really don't know how they'd make it exciting.

The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin. His father's a robot and he's fucking fucked his sister. Lego. They're all made of fucking lego.

Phone Booth was a movie about a dude standing around in a 1m² cell for an hour and that wasn't half bad

I'm pretty sure there are people in Hollywood who can make a Portal movie work

If this thread was just about Pirates of the Caribbean I was going to complain.

And if this thread was just about Bioshock I was going to complain.

Now that I can't complain about either of these, I have to say I have no fucking idea how Bioshock as a movie will work.

But it's a puzzle game. It's engaging because whilst you're solving puzzles you're listening and finding out all sorts of backstory about what went on. That doesn't sound like a good film to me.

Unless they did a prequel that had glaDOS going online and the reverse-heimlich maneavour, then that'd be neat. Otherwise I'll remain skeptical.

From a "why was the story awful in the last third" perspective or a "how did they let this happen" perspective?

If it's from a story perspective
    Spoiler:

from a technical perspective, I guess they just ran out of ideas, or decided that not enough people would play the last third to warrant making it good?

    Bioshock movie?

    I'm in.

Though to be honest, in the game I loved the presentation of the story more than I loved the story itself, but I'm sure a screenwriter with that resume would do just fine.

Can't say I ain't psyched to see the bee-arm in full force from all angles.

But I can't be sold about the game. What sells it is a dude by himself exploring a city in ruins. I can't see how that can be translated into a movie.

If this is all you got out of the game thats unfortunate. But many many movies have had a lot less to go on. There is a vast wealth of imagery, themes and characters that the film could draw from. The ending was brilliant. Not many first person shooter endings top it, in fact, none that I can think of come close.

One experience that basically cememted Bioschock in my mind as a truly realised world, was seeing a dead family, sitting on a couch, inside a barricaded home. The father having shot the rest first, then killed himself. Ive never felt so much sadness and dread in a videogame, such rich atmosphere. For me, it was an utterly engaging microcosm, a tour of humanity's problems infused with all that dark dreadful claustrophobia, walking through the remains of an entire cities slow decent into chaos and anarchy, the logs alone are something that you could focus on in a film, irregardless of the Fontaine storyline, which was comparatively weak.

I played Bioshock only recently, having heard little about it prior to popping it in. I think some perspective is called for when playing Bioshock. It was fucking stellar. It weirds me out that people are all 'meh' about it.

i think a bioshock movie if done properly will actually be quiet an emotional ride. not just a action movie. however i do expect to see awsome use of plasmids but not to the point where they over power the rest of the movie.
