Half Life 1 mods?

RaslinRaslin Registered User regular
edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
Alright, so, my buddy is having a lan party at his house on tuesday. While we all have at least a few games in common, mainly CS:S, I was looking to try some new stuff. So, I realized both me and him have HL1, and a few of our other friends do also. I remember some of the HL1 mods being really fun, though not having many players when I started playing them.

So basically, I'm looking to get some good HL1 mod action. We probably will have 4-6 people there, all with computers good enough to run HL1 and mods. So, any suggestions for mods? They hopefully shouldn't have a big learning curve(as we'll be learning together for the most part), nor be reliant on larger numbers(Natural selection, looking at you).

Games I already have in mind:

Firearms
Hostile Intent
Day of Defeat
The Ship
That DBZ mod
Team Fortress Classic

And while I realize there are some really good HL2 mods, most of our computers don't run, say, CS:S that well(like, lowest settings, between my laptop, my buddied desktop, etc).

I cant url good so add me on steam anyways steamcommunity.com/id/Raslin

Day of Defeat beta 1.3 ;)

Natural Selection is great fun if you can get a good game going. The learning curve is a little bit steep but you should be able to figure out how to command well in a few games, and alien-wise it isn't as hard.

Firearms is tons of fun if you want to play a more arcadey FPS.

Check out Front Line Force and Global Warfare, also. They are so old but those were good days.

    Edit: I keep remembering mods!

Science and Industry is INCREDIBLE. You gotta play that, it is a classic.
    Pirates, Vikings & Knights
Sven Coop. There are TONS and TONS of map packs you can download for this so the playability is huge. It's all co-op, too.

So many more, I can't remember all of them.

Yeah, for a LAN I'd also recommend Science and Industry and The Specialists.

Speaking of Firearms though, what ever happened to that? I remember it being popular and still played up until around their big Beta->1.0 push that a lot of mods strive for, then it just sort of dropped off the face of the Earth. I seem to recall around then that something happened with their website, it was either hacked or the team broke up or something, and I just don't really remember the mod going anywhere after that.

S&I + Sven Coop. Awesome. Of course, sven coop might have aged... I can imagine that gmod has probably filled the void that SC left, but I think it's still worth a go.
As for sven-coop maps, you will want*:
    -toonrun (comes with the mod)
-sc_wrongworld ( http://files.filefront.com/wrongworldzip/;3870632;/fileinfo.html ) (I always found it incredibly entertaining, though I never figured out how to get past one room...)
    -sc_wrongworld2 ( http://files.filefront.com/wrongworld2zip/;3870634;/fileinfo.html )
-question (one of my fav maps - http://files.filefront.com/questionzip/;3870355;/fileinfo.html . I *think* that's the right file, it's incredibly difficult to find the map nowadays.)
    -breakfree/breakfree2 was enjoyable (http://files.filefront.com/breakfreefinalzip/;3870701;/fileinfo.html, http://files.filefront.com/breakfree2zip/;3870338;/fileinfo.html)

And of course you can play through HL1 co-op.

*Note that I may have terrible taste.

Yeah, S&I is team-based, but not so much so that it won't be as fun with so few people. 4-8 people can have fun with it, it's just going to be a bit more odd. It's like a constant game of CTF, only with assault and kidnapping.

My suggestions in order from best to last: Sven Coop, The Specialists, Pirates Vikings and Knights. There was a mod called Jailbreak that was really fun if you could find a game, but I dunno how much fun it'd be with just 4-6 people. You might try Rocket Crowbar, too...I vaguely remember it being entertaining, but I don't remember enough about it to say it's good.

Yeah it works well with any amount of people. I use to play it all the time, so much fun. It can get a bit challenging.

Some other old school mods are Action Half-Life and The Opera, which I believe Tycho or Gabe may have done some art for IIRC. I could be wrong though, so don't quote me on it. The Opera is really old and kind of buggy. Some people recommended The Specialists, it is a lot of fun.

One of the funnest mods I have ever played is Half-Life 2: Jaykin' Bacon Source. Some of the most fun I have EVER had in a mod. It is an HL1 mod, just google it and check it out. May not be your cup of tea but I know I had tons of fun playing it.

PS07 is a pretty insane mod, too.

Half the people involved went to making a new mod. The other half started FA:Source. FA:Source was bad. Ok, maybe not bad, but not anywhere near good enough. The other one just vanished. Alos yeah there ws some drama about leaked code, taking down of websites, backstabbing etc etc.

Too bad really. At one point FA was a huge mod that was getting all kinds of mainstream attention.

There was huge drama that happened. You can read about it at firearmsmod.com if you wish. Some people went to start FA 2 against a lot of peoples' wishes (which is still being developed) and other people went to start Firearms: Source (with wishes!) and neither are released yet so I don't know what you are talking about FA:Source being bad :P Some other people went to make a mod called "World at War" (incidentally, CoD5 uses this name, and some other game before it used it) but it has died.

FA never really got to a 1.0 like Day of Defeat and CS, it kept doing release candidates until 3.1 when it pretty much died after tons of drama and other stuff.

Which RE map did you guys play? I think there are 2. There's one that has a little mini-game area where you can get the chaingun and unload on zombies.

Ok sorry. The test builds I was given the opportunity to play were horrid in my opinion. The overall response from other testers however seemed to be "Great job" when clearly it wasn't. Perhaps it changed, it just didn't seem to be going in a very good direction.

Sorry I was vague. Also I'm not trying to start some stupid argument about it, just tossing in my two cents. That's all it is.

Oh and hi neko. I remember you from the OTF I believe.

Several months. I forget the build number. If they're doing better than I'm happy. I loved FA and most of the people involved. I probably played more hours of 2.5 and 2.6 online than any other multiplayer game. Hell I was in the league and even ran a clan for awhile. :) I sincerely hope they're doing well and are successful. I apologize for my attitude about the game earlier. I was just a bit bitter about how they were handling the game.

Hrrm I think it was FAL. Yeah FAL. Our crowning moment was somehow making it to the playoffs and being absoloutly decimated by S^D. No shock there. I have no idea how we had even gotten that far. The clan might've been in CAL before I happened along though. [RA] if that means anything to ya. We used to joke that at some point everyone in FA had been in RA at one point. Then I was in PoP for a bit before my pc died. Then FA went and died while I was gone.
