Comics for kids

My 6 1/2 year old cousin is reading like crazy lately, and I'd like to encourage that as best I can, so I was wondering what some good kid friendly titles are? I've heard Marvel Adventures were aimed at younger readers but outside of that I'm lost :P so any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

PS: cousin's a girl, but she likes superhero stuff so pretty much anything's fair game.

Disney. I'm not kidding. There is a lot of gold in those old Disney comics, especially the Duck stuff.

I'm sad Carl Barks died. He's the Good Duck Artist.

[EDIT] You know what's really good too? Young Justice. And it's even (relatively) kid friendly. And if you're going let her read YJ, you might as well give her Impulse. And buy her stuff like Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbs collection, even though the comedy can be sophisticated.

When I was a kid, I grew up on (translated into) Dutch adventure comics like The Adventures of Tintin.

    [EDIT2] Powerpack!

Try giving her Bone or some of the Minx books. The entire Bone series is available in one giant tome for a pretty decent price. On the Minx front, Plain Janes, Re-Gifters, and Confessions of a Blabbermouth are the best ones I've read from the line.

If she likes any of the Batman/Superman cartoons, get her some of the Batman: Adventures, Justice League Adventures, or Justice League Unlimited trade paperbacks.

Edit: Actually, the Minx books are probably a little too wordy for her. They're a little more suited for kids in their late adolescence/early teens.

Marvel Adventures, the Johnny DC stuff (JLU, Batman Strikes, Teen Titans Go), Clockwork Girl, Owly, any of the Power Pack digests, Calvin and Hobbes, and Peanuts.

I'm going to second Mask on Owly, but be prepared that there's no much reading in there - it's almost entirely told through facial expressions and speech bubbles with symbols/pictures in them. Which is part of the appeal.

Bone's got a slightly scary panel or two, so if your kid is skittish you might want to steer clear for the time being.

You might also want to pick up some of the Marvel Essentials books - worst thing that happens is she can use them as coloring books.

Oh yeah, I'll add a yea vote to Spider-Man <3's Mary Jane too.

Also, I think it's fantastic that you're encouraging her to read like this. I had an older cousin who used to give me books as gifts. He's pretty much the reason I went on to study English Lit.

Um, I mean that to be inspirational, not "Oh Gods she'll study something useless!" I swear I'm a productive member of society. I just also happened to enjoy the heck out of college.

If Power Rangers gets a Y7 for Fantasy Violence, then certainly Bone gets slightly more for having a guy who had his face melted by dragons.

Course, you could just put smiley face stickers over those panels.

Really, it wasn't that bad, but some kids are sensitive to even the tamest depiction of burn scars.

I'd say Mini Marvels as well, but most of the jokes would probably fly over her head because she's not familiar with the Marvel Universe.

Marvel Adventures got that covered. The kid friendly Mini Marvels stuff is normally on the last page.

The first Mini-Marvels Digest didn't parody the events in the mainstream comics, I believe. It was more about Spider-Man having a paper route and stuff.

So I'm thinking Bone would be good:lol: Ashamed to say I haven't gotten around to reading it myself, maybe I'll pick it up for her and "make sure it's appropriate" before I give it up haha. I'll also look for some of those JL books, she's seen a few episodes of Justice League and liked 'em a lot (who doesn't)
I actualy know next to nothing about Spiderman Loves Mary Jane, is it like them in high school?

I love Bone, but I wouldn't let a young child read it. It's nice for a while, but it gets quite violent and sad. some characters from the beginning die, and the hooded one without the hood... quite hideous.
