ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that sources close to the Favre family say that the Packers legend (and most definite Hall of Famer) Brett Favre is strongly considering coming back to play with the Packers. Favre reportedly contacted head coach Mike McCarthy as much as two weeks ago, stating his desire to play. His family is supposedly supporting and encouraging him.

Teammate Al Harris was on NFL Live the other night and said that he knows Favre has "an itch" to play again.

Favre had 2 years left on his contract with the Packers and his return shouldnt hurt them too bad salary cap wise. In 2005 the Packers drafted QB Aaron Rodgers to be the QB of the future. Rodgers got some playing time last year and did well, but many consider him injury prone. The Pakers also drafted highly touted QB Brian Brohm in the latest draft.

Favre has denied that he is coming back. The Packers have no comment.

So, NFL fans of SE++, I ask what is your take on the big #4 putting everybody in limbo again with his "I may play, I may not" for about the 3rd year in a row?

    This is bullshit.

Teams begin planning for the next season the day the previous season ends. So since February the Packers have been designing a game plan around Rogers, and if Favre comes back he throws all of that out the window.

Also, if you go purely by stats, Favre is overrated. There. I said it.

See that in the OP? That's a FUCKIN MAN TEAR if I ever saw one.

And I think I'm in about the same boat as everyone else on this one. Reading things like this always brings to mind those two disappointing seasons when Jordan came back the second time.

I say just let it go. Pretty much no one gets to have as long and great a career as Favre (especially in this sport), and I feel it would be better for him to step down gracefully now while he still can.

The only Favre comeback I would fully support would be if he were there to actively support Rogers and work with Brohm.

personally, i am conflicted about favre coming back

i love brett favre. i love his attitude. i love his playing style. i love that he either wins or loses a football game at the flick of a wrist. he is truely the last real gunslinger quarterback

he went out pretty good last season. he took a young team a whole hell of a lot farther than anybody ever expected. he went out a winner. except his last pass being an interception to lose the game, but that still oddly fits his legacy.

i dont want to see him come back and just suck and have a horrible season.

    this

just leave on a high note like Bussy, okay

My first reaction was that I don't want him to return, my second is that the team is apparently supposed to be even better this year and I don't doubt he can still play.

My third is that I really want to see Aaron Rodgers play because I think he's pretty cool.

I'm sure John Madden's head is exploding just about now.

Rogers is indeed cool. He was on Rome's radio show last week. The dude is handling all this shit pretty well.

    All I know is this.

Favre got his shit handled by the Cowboys, hardcore.

Rodgers stepped in and kept them in the game and I think they even lead at one point.

I think the Packers need some predictability at QB and Favre delivered that last year but his track record doesn't suggest that he's going to do it again, ever.

Give me Rodgers, kthx. The dude's been on the bench for 3 years, it's time.

I think it would be easier on him if so many people (the Packers staff included) weren't constantly begging him to stay.

Most people here know I have the biggest mancrush on Favre in the world, and I'm a huge Pack fan.

But I'm just tired of the uncertainty. But I do understand to a degree. I knew that once he finally retired, he'd have second thoughts come July or August. That's inevitable. He's been playing every year since he was a little kid, and then high school, college, and 17 years in the pros. And out of all of those decades, he played in almost all of the games. (aside from his year with Atlanta, and his first two or three games in college, he didn't start)

Over the past few months I got comfortable of the idea of Rodg being our QB, I've been excited to see what he can do, and I've been looking for game tickets in New Orleans. I really like Rodg and his attitude and want to see what he's got. I think it'd be really unfair to him to have his job taken away at this point.

But that doesn't mean I'd be particularly sad if Brett did come back to the Packers. That's my favorite player ever, and just the other day I was watching replays of games in the early 90s and I felt sad knowing that he's gone. But I had come to terms with this.

If he came back now, he would inevitably retire again, and the media frenzy over the uncertainty would only be worse, ten times worse. And it's pretty bad now.

    What I think will happen...

    - If Favre actually did ask to come back, I don't think Ted Thompson will reinstate him. Unless Rodg goes down with a major injury or something. I think Thompson is really committed to taking the team forward. And despite what Brett can do on the field right now, you know there's almost no chance of a long term thing with him, at this point in his career.

    - I also don't think that Ted Thompson will release Favre and allow him to play for another team (which I honestly don't think Favre would do anyway) Favre has two years left on his contract, so unless he wants to sit, become 41 years old, and then come back for another team after not playing for two years, I can't see him coming back for another team, since I don't think Thompson will let him.

If Brett somehow did get released and chose to play for another team, that would probably be the hardest thing in the world for me to deal with.

I can't imagine what would happen if he left the Packers and then went to another team in the same division.

And I really wonder if there's much credibility to this at all. Mortensen has been known to say fire when he sees a spark lately. So Mortensen was a big reason I had some doubts.

I don't doubt that Favre probably told someone that he had an itch to play, but I have doubts over whether or not he actually approached the Packers and asked to come back. That's not to say I don't think it happened, but I'm just not sold on that yet.

I kind of hate that Favre gets a bad reputation over the media circus around him, when I don't think a lot of it is his fault. I doubt he's looking for attention at this point since last night when the story blew up all over the country, he only responded by text messaging the Biloxi paper just saying it was a rumor.

Didn't he make a point of saying that he was immune to the madden curse cause he was retired. If he comes back man he's going to get fucked up on his first play of the season for mocking the curse.

    Something like that, yes.

Doesn't mean Strahan isn't good at it though.

With all that aside, dude made his choice....don't come back to just suck it up a bit and then leave again. If he can't walk away from the game he should either coach, do commentary or own a team.

Bowing out with grace after a great career is nothing to be ashamed of.

You probably know this, but this is a big reason why Reggie White decided to sign with the Packers back in '92-93.

In a game versus Philadelphia (when Reg was still with them) in '92, he knocked the shit out of Favre, with the intent to injure him. Favre got right up, kept playing, and the Packers won.

Turns out Reggie did injure him though, dislocated Favre's shoulder. Reggie said he wanted to be on a team with a QB like that, so one of the biggest free agent signings ever came to the bay.

edit: I actually love Strahan, he's one of my favorites.
