Today's youth? Do you not remember your childhood? I remember seeing porn in 2nd or 3rd grade.

It existed before the internet, you know.

Really? I think I saw my first porny photos in 5th grade.

Yeah, I didn't see it that early either.

Now we know why you are the way you are, pikapuff.

So nintendo wii exposes children to porn thus creating a whole generation of pikapuffs?

    This shit is serious.

    Trust me. THey don't

    "Don't look at at that!"

    "Why, mommy?"

    "Because you're not supposed to!"

As opposed to, you know, actually trying to explain that when a guy and a girl love each other very much, sometimes that girl will shit on the guy's chest.

That's sigworthy. But not for me. I still like my current one.

Parents (who get quoted for things like this) are retarded. They think that if a computer is on the internet at all (or not), then a "porn dealer" can force their way on to your computer and shovel porn into your child's eyeballs against their will.
"That's why it's so important to read into and do research and background checking before you invest in it," Schroeder said. She studied her daughters' Wii to identify the built-in parental controls.

Other parents, however, complain that Nintendo's scheme is unsatisfactory, and that the Wii browser lacks a "cyber-nanny" or filtering function.

::Achem:: TOO FUCKING BAD. You don't have to enable it in the first god-damned place. If you want the kids to have to go through Net Nanny (which doesn't work and is easily bypass-able), then make them get up from the couch, walk a whopping 10-to-20-feet and use the actual computer.

If you don't want your kids going online, don't let them. YOU have to set it up. YOU can simply not. YOU can block the MAC address, or even just turn off wireless.

If a kid can get online from scratch, he or she has earned the right to look at whatever they want to. :P

    So awesome.

Isn't that console the wrong side up? Or does its heathen owner not want to play any GameCube games on it?

No, it's the correct side up to play GCN games. All's well. Please lower the pitchforks and boiling oils and such.

OK, I see it now. Keeping our systems horizontal (the wife and I both have an inherent unease with vertical disc-readers) was getting in the way of my mental rotation. Carry on!

It's best for parents to react on the side of caution when dealing with sex and youth. Who knows if the Wii or PS3 even have protection to protect children against online predators. This is one instance where the media isn't blowing something up, out of proportion

Are you serious? IE and Firefox don't have any sort of magic pedo-b-gone system either and yet they don't fall under the same scrutiny? This isn't nintendo's fault, this isn't sony's fault. It is not their responsibility. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the parents to control what their children are doing. This feat is not difficult at all with the wii being dependant upon wifi AND having its own parental controls.

I've seen enough Dateline specials to know that pedophiles are a real problem on todays internet.

I just hope Nintendo and Sony consider this when releasing something that could potentially be used to lure kids right into pedophile's basements. It would be negligent of them to do otherwise.

And in to response to your post; computers don't come with firefox. These consoles do come with a browsers for kids but not always used by kids

But they do. This article is just being sensational. It doesn't investigate as to the fact that both systems DO have the ability to block the web browsing. Yes, protection is important, but facts are either purposefully or ignorantly being omitted.

Wrong. The Wii browser is a download, and you have to enable it for it to function.

I can't speak for the PS3 but it can't be difficult to keep it dosconnected from the net.

I know. Because it (the Wii) does. Dumbass. Just disabled using Wii Shop points, the Internet Channel, and the News Channel. Took me all of 2 minutes.

Of course, a 4-digit pin isn't exactly iron-clad, but if you go back every couple weeks to change it it's pretty decent. And any kid who is willing to brute-force a 4-digit pin will probably find porn through other means anyway.

So again, for anybody that missed it, there are several ways to keep kids from surfing porn on the Wii. You can

    A) disable the Internet Channel (and Wii Shop channel)
    B) disable online settings
    C) simply filter it (the Wii) out at the router end

So not only can it be done through router settings, but the Wii makes it possible using shiny buttons, easy to follow instructions, and soothing sounds. At least for porn. As for online multiplayer leading to online predator goodness, I think Nintendo's stance with the DS can be used as evidence that it isn't likely to be an issue.

In short, you are a dumbass.

EDIT: Also, while computers don't come with Firefox they do come with IE, or Safari, or Konqueror. And generally do not come with Net Nanny or whatthefuckever.

Listen, most parents aren't very knowlegable about technology; does the wii come with instructions on how to do this, or do the parents have to figure it out themselves.

    What about the PS3?

There is tons of information for parents looking to disable their children from accessing most inappropriate sites on the PC.

It's only a matter of time until predators start using Wiis and PS3s for predatorial purposes; probably when the prices drop.

And right here, right here, is the real crux of the problem. Far, far too many parents do not want to both raising their children. They bleat for "cyber-nannies" and parental controls, not wanting to do a single damn thing themselves to raise their children, yet they are always on the lookout for when they can exploit their children for personal gain. Children are becoming a commodity, and it makes me ill.

As was already said, the Wii has pretty clear instructions on how to do this. So I'll just say it more profanely. If you don't know what the fuck you are talking about, shut your filthy whore mouth you damned taardvark.
    What about the PS3?

Dollars to pesos says it has parental controls as well. Anybody here own one and want to confirm?
There is tons of information for parents looking to disable their children from accessing most inappropriate sites on the PC.

Well gee, why not just disable the Wii Browser, then, and force their kids to use the PC instead. As has been mentioned, it's easy to do. Tons of information are not needed...the manual and/or half a fucking brain in their skull should suffice.
It's only a matter of time until predators start using Wiis and PS3s for predatorial purposes; probably when the prices drop.

Xbox Live has been around how long? Plenty of little kids on there, too....I've had to listen to the fuckers. How many cases of predators using Live to lure kids into the buttsex?

Seriously, candy is used for predatorial purposes too. Want to ban that?

So, I've been molesting children over the internets all morning using my Wiimote, and I've gotta say, it's not all the fun that the article proclaimed it would be. The control isn't accurate enough, the graphics are l4m3, and I never get the feeling that I'm really IN the game. I'm going back to XBOX live for my molesting needs.

All Nintendo would need to do is add an extra brochure to the packaging, just like the Quick Setup guide they have. With pictures and everything.

"PARENTS: How to keep PORN from your children and the Wii.

    1) Use the Wii Remote to point to the screen and the cursor at the big "Wii" button and click A.
    2) In the same manner, point and click to "System Settings".
    3) And again with "Parental Controls".
    4) And now select "Yes".
    5) PROFIT!

Not only have you ensured PORN will stay away from your children, but it will also prevent them from playing games inappropriate to their age.

Thank you for purchasing Nintendo Wii!"

"potentially be used to lure kids" - They are GAME systems .. just putting one in your house would help lure kids to it even without the internet (I know, not what you were thinking)

And since when is FireFox "for kids" ?

This whole thing is stupid .. If a parent doesnt know that ANYTHING that allows people to share files/information can and will include PORN, then they are too stupid to have kids.

Did anyone ever use the Dreamcast to look at porn? If I could get a broadband connector, that's probably what I'd do...

But how come this shit hasn't come up before? We've had systems that can BROWSE TEH INTERNETZ since the Sega Saturn, and we've had systems that can play over the internet since the SNES and Genesis (though not in this country). It seems like the media is just grabbing onto the success of the Wii, which they have reported on more than any other game system in recent history, and saying "ohSHITZ, Wii might SPWANKILLZ J00!"

    O_o

Why the fuck can't journalists understand it. Web browser (on any device) == access to the web == access to pornography. The fault does not lie with the makers of the devices.

If anyone is at fault it'd be internic (or whatever they are called now) for not creating a domain suffix for pornographic sites and enforcing the naming system as it was intended to be used. Such a system would make filtering such sites a trivial task for parents (and as a benefit for those old enough to want it, an easier time finding sites). Don't really understand what all the resistance to that idea is. Naming conventions exist for a reason; so we can quickly and easily identify what we want and what we don't want.

Edit: On the topic of Wiipron. Someone needs to make a Wiimote enabled porn site... Touch sensitive......

Oh, no think of the children!
See mine and incendiary's earlier post, lol.

I shudder to think of the interesting ways that first grader's will use this technology.

It's been made abundantly clear that Ten O'Clock is time for Rainbow Six. It is not time for other games! You might think that it is, but it isn't. Don't show up at 10:05! That's not when it is. It is earlier.

    Alaska's bigger than Texas.

Alaska can't be its own country, though. Its population is dismally small (half a million?!) for such a large area of land. Plus, a lot of the income of people in Alaska comes from the federal government, which would suddenly disappear from their checkbooks as soon as Alaska ceased being a state. The US would never allow any of these states to become their own countries, though. It would mean we'd have to get all new flags, since there weren't many 49-star flags made. And that would just piss us all off.

The only reason its a big deal is because most old people view video games as something for children. "Porn on the PC? No big deal, those are for grown-ups. Porn on the Wii/PS3?! Shit, those things are made specifically for people under 12, the littlest, tiniest of babies, ... this is an outrage!"

Seriously, they see it as the equivalent of having a Tickle-Me-Elmo doll that recites some letters to Penthouse forum when you squeeze its hand.

Then "they" are retarded and need to be taken out back and put down.
