II. Rock Band Clan Tags
Any one looking to rock out with other PAers on Xbox LIVE is more than free to add the gamertag Rock Band PA. Once the invite has been accepted, you can then select Rock Band PA from your friend list, shift a pane, and then browse all its friends. As far as courtesy goes:
  • Drop a message or inquire as to which slot is available to whomever is rockin' in Band Quickplay.
  • Headsets aren't required but it does make the whole a bit more fun.
  • Don't be a dick. This is just for fun.
  • Warn others before you sing back-up vocals to I'm So Sick.
  • If you have DLC, be prepared to play it because a majority of the PA people have large amounts of them. We don't really try to match up DLC, but if it is there, we're fucking playing it.
III. Rock Band: A Rundown

It is much easier to see it than to explain it in words.

I was just thinking - the biggest evidence that RB1 on disc tracks will come to RB2 in some capacity is the fact that almost 2 albums (Boston's self-titled ALMOST) are based off having a song on disc.

With the new, confirmed, mode that allows you to play a full album, I doubt they'd overlook tracks that are sitting on the RB1 disc.

Since the last thread had a discussion on the Music Creator in GHWT, does anybody know how or what Activision is doing to avoid getting in trouble with the RIAA? Isn't such a feature about creating songs asking for trouble? If the RIAA is willing to go after sites that offer Guitar Tabs, what's going to stop them from going after Activision?

Back to the RB discussion... why does September have to be so far away? =\

Or they could just as easily offer it as purchasable DLC later. Why turn down money?

I imagine it would be similar to something like City of Heroes, where they would just take down songs that sound similar to already made songs. With reporting and such.

Although actually there shouldn't be any problems if you made a song and gave credit to the original makers, because then it would just be a cover.

I think it'd be nice if, in addition to getting gold stars, the game lists if you've done an FC on that particular song. I'd suggest platinum stars, but I know it's possible to FC and get a lower score if you use Overdrive worse than a previous attempt.

Or better yet, have separate pages attached to each song saying how many times your character has played it, FC'd it, average star rating, favorite instrument, etc., etc., etc. Or just a more flashed out character stat page in general.

    I'm a sucker for statistics.

From what I understand, covers are technically a violation, but it's unenforced.

I'm pretty sure if you put a cover version of a song on your album that you sell then you have to pay somehow via some agency and then it's cool, but I think if you cover a song live then you don't have to pay anything. But I could be wrong obviously. So basically if the songs people make and upload are free for other people to download, there shouldn't be a problem if it's credited, but I'm sure the RIAA will want money anyway so they're probably going to not allow covers and such. But who knows.

    :|

But I don't want them to make Gold Starring uniformly easier. It should be hard as hell to get what is basically an award for playing a song nigh-perfect. I just want them to make sure there aren't specific songs where it's virtually impossible because of some freak nature of the note chart. I mean, I never GS'd more than maybe 25% of the songs on guitar, but when I did I knew that I'd damned well earned it.

I was thinking about staying up that late to get the Who songs right when they are available, since I'm kind of usually up that late anyway. But I dunno, depends on how tired I am. I've never played on Live before either, so I don't think I'd do that anyway.

I imagine it would be similar to something like City of Heroes, where they would just take down songs that sound similar to already made songs. With reporting and such.

Although actually there shouldn't be any problems if you made a song and gave credit to the original makers, because then it would just be a cover.

I was in a ska/punk band in the early 2000's that did pretty well, and we recorded and released an album. We recorded it at a studio in Central New York, and released it ourselves, via our website, in addition to having local stores (mom and pop, and even some chains like Borders) buy them in bulk at a discount and then sell them. And any retailer or person who wanted to buy them in bulk to sell wherever they were could contact us to work something out (there's 250 copies in Japan somewhere!).

But the point is - there was no record label, no distributor, no agent. Just us, with our producer being a nice enough guy to help a bunch of kids out and getting us in touch with a place that would mass produce it in smaller quantaties than you'd typically need to order. How on Earth would the RIAA find us? And why would they ever bother us?

Well - they did. The 10th track on the album was a cover of "Centerfold" by the J. Giels Band. We got a letter within a month of the CD being 'released', if you could even call it that, and quickly filled out all the paperwork they sent along with it to avoid any legal action.

    J. Giels Band got 7 cents from every album printed. Thier record label got 11 cents I believe. I always wanted to know when they got a check for the $90 it cost us to print the 1st 500 CD's, if they ever took the time to realize what they were even getting paid for.

So I can only imagine how insane the cost of just covering a song would be in Rock Band.

Oh, and one more thing for people having issues getting gold stars: The gold star score threshold is now easier to achieve in Rock Band 2. No more cursing at impossible deploy paths!

Yeah, I don't think I want gold starring to be easier. I mean, it's already painfully easy to gold star the vast majority of guitar and bass tracks. At this point, It's almost not a challenge anymore. I can download DLC and gold star most tracks on my first go. Drums and vocals are marginally harder for me, but I have a feeling that Arikado doesn't have too much difficulty gold starring vocals and proficient drummers easily gold star drum songs.

Now, making sure that all songs are gold starrable and not have any that are bugged, that's a different story.

So am I a terrible person for originally wanting to get Rock band with my roommates, but since we aren't moving in until early september, we are holding out for Rock Band 2.. but since Guitar hero world tour has make-your-own-tracks... I want that more?

Does Guitar hero world tour have online play? I mean rock band looks pretty spiffy and everything but being able to do your own stuff is pretty big.

Whenever a friend of mine brings up that music track creator deal, I ask him "Ok, so how will it work?"
I am willing to bet that the music creator will be one of two extremes:

    1) Really in-depth with amazing tools for customizing your instrumental track in various styles. You can spend hours/days/weeks processing and producing your track. Not for the casual or musically challenged. Some might even say the menus are eye sores.

    2) Really simplistic. You can spend around an hour and have an entire track set to play with your friends. You get few options in terms of sound and style and there are other limitations. However, a fair amount of people will be wanting more out of it.

If Activision can find middle ground, then it'll bring just as many fans as haters. Having seen GH3, On Tour, and GH: Aerosmith, I sincerely doubt that the music creator will be something streamlined and amazing compared to the rest of the solo/multiplayer content.

I'm hoping for at least the ability to do use some of the more off-the-beaten-path scales like the Japanese or Mixolydian, because then I could get my Friedman or Petrucci on.

Also, the guitar notechart for Snow can kiss my ass. Took me three tries to finally pass it (longest it has ever taken me to pass a DLC song, I even knocked Blackened and Ride the Lightning out in 2 tries each) and then only with a 4 star (too many little single misses in the long chord strum sections). I think I'll put some time in a get it to 5 stars and then lay it off to side. I doubt I'll ever be able to gold it.

Man, I hope that leaked list at the end of the last thread turns out to be more true than the other leaks. Because that last leak was much better.

I am also very excited about this new supposed singer-cant-fail mode. That will make parties much, much, much, much more awesome. It is super annoying to always have your singer fail out without even coming close to hitting a phrase.

Yeah, the fact that you can sightread and gold star a song on expert guitar says nothing about the game so much as it says you are far above the curve. Making a song challenging for you makes it impossible or close to it for the majority of the user base.

This is a discussion/argument that has been going on for a while now. There are many who are pretty good at the game who find it to be too easy. They want it to be harder. More complicated.

This discussion/argument will continue forever into the future.

So I recently got Rock Band, about a week ago, I'm really loving the drums, and was doing pretty well I thought with them (I never liked the guitar in guitar hero, my fingers and five frets couldn't keep up well, but I'm getting better at it slowly), but I'm now just hitting a big ceiling in Medium on drums - the last 40% of Green Grass and High Tides utterly wrecks my face. Day Late, Dollar Short is the same case, but I was able to beat all the free play songs on easy so I at least unlocked them that way. I just cannot make myself keep the beat with GG & HT at all after the fast part starts. Doesn't help that you can't play all the songs on easy either so I'm kind of stuck if I actually want to get to the last fifteen tracks at all. Is there any pointers or things to try besides practicing on the song a thousand times? =/

    no, it's pretty much practice.

go back and five star the rest of the songs on Medium drums. in order to five star you will have to get better at hitting notes well and in long chains, so by the time you get back to the tougher stuff you'll be more prepared.

True. I just don't think gold starring needs to be easier. It kind of deflates the reward of the getting the gold stars in the first place.

I mean, I hardly have any gold stars on expert drums, but if they lowered the threshold for gold stars to where my five star drums scores were gold star quality, I'm not going to feel like I'm fucking awesome because I just gold starred a drum song. I'm just going to know that the bar has been lowered and my skill level hasn't changed a bit.

Agreed. Little things like the difficulty bubbles shifting up and down slightly (like the layers in photoshop weren't lined up right), Panic Attack being by Finger Eleven when it's been confirmed as Dream Theatre and R.E.M.'s "Whats The Frequency, Kenneth?" being titled wrong gave it away. But it was a damn good effort.

But a lot of those songs really did seem like great choices for RB2.

From what I've heard on the 1up podcast a week or so ago, the Music Track Creator falls under #1.

The host was saying how one of the Neversoft guys was laying track over track over track with multiple samples of each instrument to the point where he recreated 'Smells like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana. They didn't go into detail on whether it was close to the real song, but the way they described it made the Music Track Creator sound very complex. Definitely something that your average person, which is the majority of users, will even bother with.

Personally, I think there will be a very small, and I mean, small minority of people who will really get a kick out of this. I don't even think the people who normally make custom songs will do much with this since all they had to do in the past was slap notes onto pre-existing tracks and not actually make the tracks themselves.
