So i'm considering switching to linux, but i'd like to give it an extended test run before i commit.

If i follow these instructions, can this potentially fuck up my flash drive? I don't have anything file wise on it, i'd just like to not ruin it.
Does linux run better off of a CD than it does off of a flash? (i'd think the flash drive would have the advantage here)
Also, i have a friend with a busted cdrom in his laptop and a bad virus infection. If i use these instructions, will i also be able to easily install ubuntu onto his harddrive? It's just like running it off of a cdrom right?

that's kinda the point of keeping it on a USB drive.
i have my USB linux for internet, etc that i can take anywhere with me and i have windows on my main machine for gaming.

i know mikal's just running linux off a USB drive (which i still don't understand since he's already got Vista on his box and SP1 made things not so bad) but i wasn't aware there was a linux port of Diablo 2 out.
unless you're talking about running it through WINE, which is a bit more complicated.

Not really. Install wine (two clicks in Synaptic), put the CD in the drive, double click install.exe.

It would be delicious and free, but whenever somebody notices you don't eat Windows they call you a hippy. Also, your little brother's annoying friend discovers that you can make a Linux sandwich from scratch using raw pig and wheat, then spends all day telling you how much faster he can eat it.
Am I like the only person that has not been raped in the ass by Windows? Because I simply have not experienced all of these horror stories that people keep bringing up.

i'm *not* going linux only.
I'm putting linux on my USB drive so that i can set up my interface the way i like and it becomes portable. It's also useful for cracking WEP's and things of that nature.
I'm also doing it because it seems like the best way to fix my friend's laptop that has: a busted cd rom, and a very bad virus.

Windows makes it easy to do simple things and fucking ridiculous to do complicated things. It's also terribly fragile due to reliance on ancient brain-damage like the registry.
Holy shit, the registry, I could write a whole post about what a bad idea that is.

Uses the same brands of meat and bread as Linux, but they also put on a half pint of mayo and you can't ask them to hold it. All the customization applications are ported from Linux, or the related sandwich BSD, but none of it expects the mayo to be there.
