Let's see where this takes us. I know there are a few musicians on this board, and I being a fairly huge community, we all have different tastes. It would be nice to see us all come together for one big music discussion. Opinions on music can vary from person to person, but musicians of every caliber can always band together and ask, "Woah, dude, what are you running that Rickenbacker through?"
I'm currently juggling a few projects in my free time. My main group is called
Cicada Creek. Kinda all over the place. Krautish, proggish, people compare us all the way from Hawkwind and Iron Butterfly to Santana and Cream. Honestly, I like to think we have a bit of a peculiar sound.
While things in CC have wound down a bit (we're supposed to record an album tomorrow, but that's up in the air), I've taken to writing music for a new group called The Nod. I grew up listening to the New Orleans scene. EYEHATEGOD, Acid Bath, Soilent Green, etc. Lots of that stuff is heavy on the drug reference. So it's kind of a parody. The few songs we've written are funny. Like, "Smokin Gel" and "Oh God I'm Sick". Just fun stuff.
As far as gear, I'm running a modified Fender J with an Audere preamp through a Hartke head and Ampeg cab. The Hartke may need replacement soon. It has alot of options to contour
clean sounds, but there's no ass to it. I gotta use a Big Muff to get any kind of distortion out of the thing. I played through a vintage tube amp the other night while jammin with a cover band. Can't remember the name, but it was only something like... 45 watts, but it SCREAMED. Had tons of ass to it. Great control over clean to heavily compressed sound.
I'm also pimping a cheapo Yamaha PJ. Sounds good, but there is absolutely no tone control to it. Only a pup blend and individual volume knobs.
I mentioned the Rickenbacker in the OP simply because... that's probably gonna be what I save up for when I make another instrument purchase.
I thought about adding a second cab to my Hartke, but I think it might be in my best interest to maybe upgrade to a 610, trade off the 410, and go from there. I don't want to make too many changes if I'm not plannin on sticking with that Hartke head.
And finally...
WANT!!!
Posts
The problem is, I don't know anything about amps.
I want an amp that is good for metal and/or blues. Educate me?
Marshall's fine.
I prefer Orange.
Hell, when I played with the cover band the other night, they had several Peavy's (most Mississippi stores do...) and they were fucking WAILING, even the small 110. Couldn't believe it.
So the guitars are a '93 Les Paul Classic Premium Plus and a 2001 American Strat. My rack consists of two rockman 100 Sustainors in series with a 2 channel dbx 231 equalizer in the effects loop for each. They lead into My rockman chorus delay, wich then connects to my Crybaby Wah. Everythings controlled by the midi pedal board. All this is feuled by my Mesa Boogie Nomad 45. Probably a much nicer rig than I deserve and I'm still working on getting the right sound out of it, but what can I say I've always been a gear head.
I'm a big classic rock guy. I really want to be able to play some Robin Trower but I'm still no where near good enough.

Though I have a different model, (a Washburn) it looks almost exactly like this one.
Oh yeah, and mine has a Jesus fish in gold on the head.
I'll need to ask a mod if it's okay to atleast link to it. It's... hilarious.
EDIT
Anyone know anything about banjos? I'm an owner of one now.
I'm thinking... maybe 300. Tops.
Current user replaced the high hat stand and the kick pedal.
I bought a brand new e-kit for twice that.
Did it have hex shaped drums?
Apples and Buicks.
300 should get you an all right kit off CL second hand with no damages. Play it first.
well, apples and iMacs, really.
get it
because one of them is an electronic apple
sort of
....shut up.
Yeah, the drummer in my band is currently using it.
The only band with an internet setup right now is my game cover band, but I'm in a regular band too, which is a bit like a British stylised Bad Religion.
I use Cubase SX 3 & Cubase Studio 4 (thank fuck for student prices), Mixcraft 4, and various Synths and VSTis. I record drums via my midi Electric Drum Kit (A Yamaha DTXtreme electric kit), and then use a mixture of purchased and home-made samples to make our drums sound good. For other Synth I use a very old midi keyboard and play it in, and then a selection of free and purchased VST instruments.
There's a hell of a lot of stuff that I could and would like to show, really, from my mixing desk to some of the software and tricks I've picked up over the years, but...
My pride and joy though is my drums. It's one of those kits that is just way too ridiculously large for it's own good, but I still find a time and a place for everything when I get to play my real kit.

Our recording gig is one single studio mic, mono, hooked to a 2 track, then to a MacBook and Garage Band.
:P
You want a crazy drum kit do a Google Image search for Terry Bozzio. Every drum is tuned individually, and he basically plays solo songs on it that way.

Excess!
And yeah, I'm familiar with him. Big Zappa fan.
Did you not have the gong out when you took the pictures or is it just behind the throne?
The main reason for hundreds of cymbals is that unlike drums every cymbal is drastically different, even the sound between a 17" and a 15" crash made in the same factory by the same company from the same metal will be very different. And that's without even hitting the different types of cymbal there are..
At some point in the future (when I upgrade my electric kit, which right now is pretty standard, and I want one with better pads with more triggers), I want to integrate an electric drum brain into the kit and have some electric cymbals. Some day.

To reach that last china you actually have to flip your hand backwards, but if you're coming off the ride to move elsewhere you can graze past it on the way up and it makes for a fun sound and feel. It's not even actually a china, it's an old hihat I took a hammer too and turned into a china-of-sorts.

I totally want a Moog. Super bad.
The Korg DS10 though will have to do for a while.
Hi5! I hadn't even played one before November last year, then my brother's all "I'm starting a band, I've got two others in, and you're buying a cajon to join in"
Luckily I'd had years of practice from drumming on tables, so it worked out alright. And yes, they are damned fun to play.
You're not in any of those videos...
And can I have your key player's number?
EDIT
Oh, wait, you are in the videos. The camera man just shuns you. Sentence two can still stand.
You can have my number, though.
My Silver Beard
This however, is my pride and joy Limited Edition Alpine white Epiphone Thunderbird bass. Bask in its glory
We'd be accused of ripping off The White Stripes
Fixed.
that does not make those posts inaccurate though
I also have a Tanglewood acoustic bass which is quite lovely, although I don't play it nearly as much as I should.
Bozzio, Levin, Stevens is a great super group. their album is definitely Black Light Syndrome is worth a listen.
So I have crappy equipment for recording and am getting promoted wednesday. the cover song contest has motivated me to get a better rig. Suggestions on starter equipment for recording?
