Let's see where this takes us. I know there are a few musicians on this board, and I being a fairly huge community, we all have different tastes. It would be nice to see us all come together for one big music discussion. Opinions on music can vary from person to person, but musicians of every caliber can always band together and ask, "Woah, dude, what are you running that Rickenbacker through?"

I'm currently juggling a few projects in my free time. My main group is called Cicada Creek. Kinda all over the place. Krautish, proggish, people compare us all the way from Hawkwind and Iron Butterfly to Santana and Cream. Honestly, I like to think we have a bit of a peculiar sound.

While things in CC have wound down a bit (we're supposed to record an album tomorrow, but that's up in the air), I've taken to writing music for a new group called The Nod. I grew up listening to the New Orleans scene. EYEHATEGOD, Acid Bath, Soilent Green, etc. Lots of that stuff is heavy on the drug reference. So it's kind of a parody. The few songs we've written are funny. Like, "Smokin Gel" and "Oh God I'm Sick". Just fun stuff.

As far as gear, I'm running a modified Fender J with an Audere preamp through a Hartke head and Ampeg cab. The Hartke may need replacement soon. It has alot of options to contour clean sounds, but there's no ass to it. I gotta use a Big Muff to get any kind of distortion out of the thing. I played through a vintage tube amp the other night while jammin with a cover band. Can't remember the name, but it was only something like... 45 watts, but it SCREAMED. Had tons of ass to it. Great control over clean to heavily compressed sound.

I'm also pimping a cheapo Yamaha PJ. Sounds good, but there is absolutely no tone control to it. Only a pup blend and individual volume knobs.

1010550fi9.jpg

1010551ej2.jpg

I mentioned the Rickenbacker in the OP simply because... that's probably gonna be what I save up for when I make another instrument purchase.

I thought about adding a second cab to my Hartke, but I think it might be in my best interest to maybe upgrade to a 610, trade off the 410, and go from there. I don't want to make too many changes if I'm not plannin on sticking with that Hartke head.

And finally...

what with getting a new job and a lot more money from my current job than I originally thought, I'm thinking of buying a sweet amp. I've been playing on a little Marshall amp for the last little while.

The problem is, I don't know anything about amps.

I want an amp that is good for metal and/or blues. Educate me?

    Marshall's fine.

    I prefer Orange.

Hell, when I played with the cover band the other night, they had several Peavy's (most Mississippi stores do...) and they were fucking WAILING, even the small 110. Couldn't believe it.

This thread again, huh? Well I'm bored at work

    dsc00753al4.jpg

So the guitars are a '93 Les Paul Classic Premium Plus and a 2001 American Strat. My rack consists of two rockman 100 Sustainors in series with a 2 channel dbx 231 equalizer in the effects loop for each. They lead into My rockman chorus delay, wich then connects to my Crybaby Wah. Everythings controlled by the midi pedal board. All this is feuled by my Mesa Boogie Nomad 45. Probably a much nicer rig than I deserve and I'm still working on getting the right sound out of it, but what can I say I've always been a gear head.

I'm a big classic rock guy. I really want to be able to play some Robin Trower but I'm still no where near good enough.

I also found a hilarious NSFW pic of an upright bass constructed out of women and butt plugs.

I'll need to ask a mod if it's okay to atleast link to it. It's... hilarious.

    EDIT

Anyone know anything about banjos? I'm an owner of one now.

What do you drummers think I should pay for a third hand, very used, beginners set? I think one of the high hats isn't even a high hat, and what is being used to replace the high hat is cracked.

    I'm thinking... maybe 300. Tops.

Current user replaced the high hat stand and the kick pedal.

300 should get you an all right kit off CL second hand with no damages. Play it first.

Okay, equipment I own. In my band I act as the sound tech guy for recording, and we do it all in my bedroom. We (most specifically me and one other guy) have spent a lot, but the upside is I own it all and can do whatever I want in my spare time with it outside of the band.

The only band with an internet setup right now is my game cover band, but I'm in a regular band too, which is a bit like a British stylised Bad Religion.

I use Cubase SX 3 & Cubase Studio 4 (thank fuck for student prices), Mixcraft 4, and various Synths and VSTis. I record drums via my midi Electric Drum Kit (A Yamaha DTXtreme electric kit), and then use a mixture of purchased and home-made samples to make our drums sound good. For other Synth I use a very old midi keyboard and play it in, and then a selection of free and purchased VST instruments.

There's a hell of a lot of stuff that I could and would like to show, really, from my mixing desk to some of the software and tricks I've picked up over the years, but...

My pride and joy though is my drums. It's one of those kits that is just way too ridiculously large for it's own good, but I still find a time and a place for everything when I get to play my real kit.

You want a crazy drum kit do a Google Image search for Terry Bozzio. Every drum is tuned individually, and he basically plays solo songs on it that way.

now, i've just started very basic drumming, but why do drummers always have a million cymbals and toms, but only one snare? Why not have multiple snares? you can get very, very different snare sounds, this I know.

    Evil Multifarious on
  • APZonerunnerAPZonerunner Registered User regular
    edited September 2008
Furthest left is a piccolo snare, not a tom. That's the main snare sound difference that can't be obtained by simple tuning. The main reasoning is unlike an XHat (a constantly closed or open hihat that sits elsewhere - mine sits middle-right), any other position for the snare other than the traditional one just isn't useful, which makes multiple snares difficult to handle in a realistic way.

The main reason for hundreds of cymbals is that unlike drums every cymbal is drastically different, even the sound between a 17" and a 15" crash made in the same factory by the same company from the same metal will be very different. And that's without even hitting the different types of cymbal there are..

At some point in the future (when I upgrade my electric kit, which right now is pretty standard, and I want one with better pads with more triggers), I want to integrate an electric drum brain into the kit and have some electric cymbals. Some day.

I can't hear the difference between most cymbals but I know that's just my untrained ear. I'm sure as I continue to drum I will begin to feel the cymbal-hunger.

For the record, mine are (left to right) HiHat, Splash, Crash, China, Ride (with makeshift simmer, made from wire and a screw!) XHat, Crash, Crash/Ride (Hybrid Sound), Ride, Splash, China.

To reach that last china you actually have to flip your hand backwards, but if you're coming off the ride to move elsewhere you can graze past it on the way up and it makes for a fun sound and feel. It's not even actually a china, it's an old hihat I took a hammer too and turned into a china-of-sorts.

Hi5! I hadn't even played one before November last year, then my brother's all "I'm starting a band, I've got two others in, and you're buying a cajon to join in"

Luckily I'd had years of practice from drumming on tables, so it worked out alright. And yes, they are damned fun to play.
