So, yeah, you definitely need the Network Addon Mod if you don't have it already. It comes with an installer and everything so you don't have to worry about the files, but if you want to anyway mods are installed under the "Sim City 4\Plugins" directory in your "My Documents" folder.
As for gameplay advice, what I like to do is start off slow - the very first thing you need to do is turn a profit. Then expand from there, and make liberal use of cheetah speed.
I wish they would as well. (I came up with this username 3 years before The Sims came out and I've never actually played The Sims. I just liked SimCity 2000 a lot.)
But so far we've gotten SimCity Societies and SimCity Creator is coming out for the Wii this week. I don't really see a reason to care about either.
Given that, I'm not optimistic Maxis is going to do a true SimCity sequel anytime soon.
Hey has anyone been following Cities XL? It looks like it might not be that bad of a new SimCity alternative. The road building in it looks pretty slick since there's no grid system.
That looks pretty fucking amazing, actually. Wow, I'm keepin' an eye on this thang.
Divide your cities up into the different Forums. DnD can be a heavy commercial down-town area, and SE++ landfill, sewage, industrial, and power plants.
Looking forward to participating in this thread (when not in class). Sim City is one of my all-time favorite franchises. Such a shame they took a dump on it with Societies instead of producing Sim City 5 proper. Thanks EA.

I made a cyberpunk city in societies so large that it crashed my computer
All I ask is that there be a cluster of churches in a district named for me.
It's been a while, but wasn't the church building dropped in Sim City 3000? I do remember SC2000 spamming those giant Christian churches all over the (residential) place.
In the beginning: residential and industrial. Any commercial beyond a very, VERY minute portion of your city (10%) is overdoing it. Do not build any public buildings except MAYBE a school.
Two biggest pitfalls: too many public buildings, too much commercial.

Not entirely sure I'm a fan of the look of the game.
Edit: Looks like they did some pretty fantastic work on their transportation though.

Indeed, you shouldn't really build any public services until people want them.

I quite liked the way the cities looked when it was gliding through. Seems like it would be pretty graphically intense though?
In any case, you fuckers just made me realise how much I want to play SC4. Now I must go and buy it on the weekend. Societies only entertained me for a few hours... it really was a poor effort. The concept was interesting, but ut kist kinda seemed a bit too "dumbed down".

Make the city in a shape to actually look like an ass
hey satan...: thinkgeek amazon My post |
A penis.
EDIT: Or, if you make it like an ass, make town hall in the center with every road in the surrounding blocks leading to it.

My city will be bigger!
They need to up and do SC5 already.
why would they do such a thing when they can crank out sims expansions and continue to roll around in giant piles of money?
I'm waiting for 'Spore, Petz Expansion"
If that happens I'm buying a shitload of Kingsford and starting a good old fashioned <insert title>cide.
It's Will Wright, not Blizzard, Jesus.
See: The Sims, The Sims 2
There were two expansions for Sim City 4. Two.
Go cry wolf elsewhere, if you would be so kind.

I plan to, but the problem is that SC4 is really geared towards multiple cities to make a profit.
;-)

That seemed to up property values pretty quickly.
But apparently nooooooooo they don't like fountains in SC4.
