Thread for Tabletop Nerds

So we have threads here for D&D and for Warhammer/WH40K all the time, but I'm curious what other games you guys are into.


I know there were games of Apples to Apples and Munchkin at PAX, and in the last two years I've given Arkham Horror and Settlers of Catan as gifts for Secret Satans, so at the very least we can talk about those.


I'm currently playing a VOIP Shadowrun game with some other SE folks (<3 4th edition!) and I played a half-hour or so of Betrayal at the House on the Hill with Orikae and Melding at PAX.

    I tend to shift away from actual board games with a setup time and all that.

    Take a fun game like Puerto Rico, cardidize it, and bam, you've got an awesome game like San Juan.

    I also enjoy Ruse and Bruise, House on Haunted Hill, or sometimes the Order of the Stick game(it takes forever).

    I really got into the fourth edition rules when people were playing some online games, and would like to try them out with some people around here. Hopefully I can talk to Rank about that sometimes soon.

    I wanna get back into tabletop gaming

    but I just don't have a group anymore

    so now I have like a million books just sitting around and I want to play some werewolf again

    also I know if I started this I'd be the most likely one to be running it, which I don't think I can do considering I've been trying to get into writing more stuff and nanowrimo is coming up

    I love anything with colored pieces and boards and cards.

    I have also started collecting vintage board games.

    Right now I have Krull, Pac-man, the Inventors, Mad magazine and some others.

    Also I keep trying to make you a hacker character but it keeps ending up almost exactly like the Hacker sample character so I think you should just use that one.

    and it does take about 8-10 hours for a good game

    how do you guys do internet games

    is it through an aim chatroom or what

    because I'd probably be up for that, I've just had some bad experiences with playing games using posts on forums

    I've found that maptools + ventrilo works very well for Dungeons and Dragons.

    It would probably work well for other games with a wee bit of modifying.

    I played D&D once, I charged my dwarf toward a bush full of elf archers.

    The way it was explained to me after was that I was SO DEAD that not even divine intervention could bring me back.

    I was used to stuff like Rifts and TMNT where you could take multiple rounds of machine gun fire.

    Play-by-post never fucking works, I tried it a few times and finally realized what a waste of time it was.

    It is expensive, takes forever, but at the end you will feel like every turn was a chapter in a big space epic opera.

    Descent Journeys in the Dark plus all expansions, Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Twilight Imperium III plus expansions, Settlers of Catan, Carcasonne and Age of Empires III are mainstays in my board gaming group.
