I'm at work for another 1.5h, but I took my action. I'll pull out my glow globe and continue shooting if my turn comes up again.

I'm not really happy with how slowly the game has been progressing lately, and I'm sure you guys would like it to be moving along a bit quicker as well. Is there another night a week we could play? Squeezing in two nights a week would help, or if you think we just need a different single night to be more productive...

Maybe a slight bending of initiative rules is needed, because I want to take my turn.

I talked to Utsanomiko - he should be posting his turns tonight. As for me, I will be on immediately after we finish up this endless setlist in RB2 (failed a song so we're taking a quick bathroom break).

Like, do you want to use a Fate Point to reroll it, or do you want to roll your next turn?

Erm... I know this is rather awkwardly late, but could you add my name to the list of people who'd be interested if another game got going? I just got the rulebook the other day, and the urge to do morally questionable things in the Emperor's name won't go away.

    Well, alright then.

Making a (rather abnormal) Tech-Priest, because the opportunity to have a team with 0 combat specialists is too good to give up.

If you want to get all your rolls out of the way for climbing down, that would be cool. If you do end up botching an Ag roll by more than four degrees of failure and mess up on your Strength test, I'll have to roll a bit for when you land in the net, but otherwise you should be able to take care of all the rolls yourself.

Well, as much as I'm glad the game got a chance to finish (almost none do) and I got some fun, characterful actions in, that will probably be my last purely-PBP game. After seeing how Dark Heresy runs in person, and the amount of group strategy, deliberation, and player-to-GM communication that can occur in 3-4 hour sessions, it really requires to be in person or voice chat.

If another session is run over Vent I might be interested.

EDIT: Having a mutant you're not supposed to kill in 40kRP is like having a door you're not supposed to open in D&D. Why else is he there, in the big picture? Certainly not to make it seem like mutants are acceptable in Warhammer. Hell, the starter adventures suggests rewarding players killing mutants among eachother. One of the reasons to keep other players from looking at your character sheet and hide your darker secrets at all costs.

If it's any condolences, I forgot I was going to lay a candle upon his body and set him on fire, say a few words of litany. Kinda to see him properly off, but oh well.

I don't know about running it in Vent, but playing real-time using some sort of RP program is definitely how I'd want to go for any future games.

The length of this game ran for much, much longer than I had planned on it, and we didn't even get through all of the game I had planned out. I feel I owe apologies to the players who were dedicated to this and showed up every time they were supposed to, and were probably fidgeting around all night waiting for the slowpokes to show up.

I've noticed the importance of punctuality in a scheduled game, especially on how it affects player motivation. If two or three people contribute within the first half-hour and every body else is two hours late or had last minute real plans occur, they're not likely to wait as long next week. They might refresh for twenty minutes and then do something else away from the forum or PC. Two hours of no-shows and the session ought to be canceled for the night, for everyone's sake of time.

The flexibility of participation in PBP is by far its biggest disadvantage, hurting the group for the sake of a couple people. I've been trying to think of ways around it, such as precedent to resolve one turn per day, as opposed to waiting for everyone to post and hoping they do once per day.

Ultimately, there's still going to be a big lack of communication and discussion going on in those minimum-post PBP games, and unless you find 4-6 people who can and will hop online at a time and post rapidly for a couple hours, there's not much solution.

Well, if you guys have any feedback to provide on the actual campaign itself, any sort of suggestions you'd have as per narrative or pacing, what you'd prefer to see or not to see in the future, etc., that would help me figure out what to come up with for experimenting with a real-time DH game in a month or so.

Maptools is definitely the way to go for DH. Whether or not to use Vent is up to the players. I'm at work right now, but I will have more later on.

Story was engaging, but the quick pace of combat combined with the mechanics of PbP play made for some very trudging sections. I know this is in part to my missing a couple of sessions; however, I think the point remains the same: that combat for DH must be run real-time.

The only problem I had the entire time was with the climbing scene. Keep in mind that the average stat of a new character is a 31. This means a 31% chance of making a straight Agility test. The chance of failure goes up exponentially with the requirement of multiple rolls. My suggestion is to not be afraid of granting bonuses. Having a rope, as opposed to climbing barehanded, should have granted a +20 to the check, and if the slope was at all forgiving (as opposed to your typical vertical stone wall), we should have received additional bonuses from that as well.

When all you do is roll percentile for everything, you have to jazz the game up with modifiers; otherwise every roll becomes the same. This of course only should apply to out-of-combat situations, as the combat system is already balanced in that everyone has low combat scores.

In the end, I had quite a bit of fun in the game. I think the tone was set to a gritty-enough level, and I thought everyone's characters (NPC's included) made for some fun and interesting interactions.

Combat was far from a problem for me, and I think with a small number of participants it's clean-cut and engaging enough to be one of the smoother parts of the game. Although I wasn't part of the bar fight, so maybe it felt slower than it looked.

The two or three slowest parts seemed to be location transitions and getting from place to place. The ammount of coordination needed to get a party to discuss and settle upon a course of action is severely hindered by PBP. A whole round of combat can be resolved in the time it takes to just get a round of suggestions on an even slightly open-ended task like 'where would we find an elevator?'. With most PBP games this takes a full day, and were were basically playing just one day a week.

In PBP I feel these situations need to minimized and streamlined as much as possible; present a new scene, outline the clear-cut options, get responses from the majority, assume everyone is in favor of moving forward, and progress the game to the next scene and set of options.

And definitely use modifiers, as I mentioned during after the first fall. An unmodified skill test is a challenging difficulty, on par with a Moderate difficulty in WEG's D6 or I suppose something like a DR 14 in D20. I design my challanges first with the basic idea for the plot and relevant skills to use (a river to cross, a merchant to haglge or con, etc), and then scale its difficulty depending on the general results I want to produce ("Only one or two should even be slowed down by the river, so it'll be Strength +30, three degrees to fail and need assistance", "they don't need that item and it shouldn't be cheap, so -20 to even buy it", and such).

I agree with lots of stuff said so far. PbP doesn't really feel right to me since it felt like every post I made had to have some kind of substance when in person/over vent your characters could make small talk and have a lot more depth to the game.
