I'm all for corporal punishment.
I got spanked as a kid and really it's the best way to let a kid know not to do something.
Taking away priviliges and being yelled at can only go so far.
the funny thing is that studies have repeatedly shown that punishment is only effective at stopping someone from getting caught at the offending behavior
now for some, they may mean they just stop doing it
but for many it may just result in them hiding the behavior
also punishment isn't effective at driving positive behavior that you want to reinforce
so while I'm not opposed to spanking and such within reason, some parents really should be focusing more on positive reinforcement of the behavior they want to encourage instead of relying so heavily on punishment of any kind

I dropped him off at daycare today (a bus picks him up, takes him to kindergarten, then brings him back) and we took the beagle in the car with us.
We get there, and he pets the beagle bye-bye, then we hope out, he runs up and gives me a big hug outside of the car, we go in, I sign him in, help him put his lunch & backpack away, then he gives me a HUGE hug & kiss on the cheek, walks away to start playing, runs back over to give me another hug, then I head back to the car.
He comes running down the hallway crying about he'll miss me and he wants me to stay and watch him at school and doesn't want to wait until this afternoon to see me again.

I am in a similar position. My brothers son was diagnosed ADHD with what I am told is a mild form of autism. My brother and his wife are dumb asses. They make no attempts to teach him or his sister and ignore him most of the time.
My sisters daughter has been diagnosed with the same things. She one the other hand has been in the care of my mother since she was a month old. I am the one that financially supports her. I am the one that taught her things. Not just her though. I have done a lot for my nephew or as much as I can. I was the one that taught him to ride a bicycle, play baseball, football, share, be kind to others and never to talk dirty to people. Which my brother and his wifes family taught him to do.
My niece has been doing great at making friends and behaving in school. She's learning at a good rate too. She's been a natural dancer since she was in a crib. That has made it easy for us to deal with hyperactivity. I told myself when she was taking from my sister that I was not going to let her fall victim to shitty parenting and terrible family members.
I don't think this post belongs here looking back on it.

You shouldn't just spank them all the time, of course.
You need to reinforce the good behaviors with rewards and punish bad behavior.
Also the punishment should fit the crime. You don't want to spank them for minor infractions.
Spanking should probably be done very occasionally. Spank them all the time and it won't mean anything.
