Play FFXII. It's technically active-turn based except the turns are really fast and you can map basic stuff to be done automatically. What this means is that the game can throw shit at you much, much faster and harder while still being possible.

Unfortunately the one big screw-up that they haven't fixed is the cumbersome setup, so more like thirteen.
Combat was simultaneously boring and extremely difficult, even with groups. Also the world was kind of uninteresting as a whole.
