So I installed the game and all I get is a black screen. It just sits there until I minimize or ctrl+alt+del out.
Anybody have any ideas?
I've been having that problem too, but it pops up after awhile. Have you tried starting it up and walking away for a few minutes to see if it ever comes up?
Not yet, just downloaded the patch from the Red Alert site and installed it. We'll see if that does it.
EDIT: Shit, no dice. I patched it, same problem. I let it sit for several minutes while reading the manual, and it still won't work.
Did you patch to 1.01, or all the way up to current (1.02)? The latest patch is the one that fixes that black screen problem.
I patched to 1.02.
Weirdly enough, when I restarted my system the problem went away. Though now I get this graphical glitch where like half my screen with flicker black for some reason.
I know it knows i am online as well, because it prompts me to download the patches when i start up the game ( just got 1.03), and it also authenticated my registration in game...
Well I'm also through a router, and I haven't messed with any ports yet. It doesn't prevent me from playing online, it just often disconnects me randomly. I just re-log and carry on. Annoying, but not unplayable.
Has anyone else on a university campus had issues with connecting to the Gamespy server? I don't have any firewalls running, and I've never had problems with other online games. I'm thinking it has something to do with the university firewall blocking certain ports that have to be open.
I tried getting help through EA's wonderful support system, but they haven't responded yet.
Huh. What model router do you have? Have you tried connecting directly to your cable modem? This is an exceptionally weird problem.
Re: university dorms, some folks on the official boards are having problems hosting games but I haven't heard of a dorm firewall keeping you offline altogether.

I have a Netgear WNDR3300
its super fancy
and yeah, i get the same thing just running the modem
which leads me to believe theres something on my computer, or i have a stupid setting wrong, or gamesy just doesnt like me
I just noticed it says "attempting to connect to gamespy" at the bottom before i see the "Could not connect to Red alert Online" message
I love this game to death, but there's one thing that's constantly aggravated me throughout:
The return all units to base command.
This is doubly annoying because I honestly have no idea *what* the hotkey is that makes this happen, only that I hit it the most right during a heated battle.
I finished the Soviet campaign, as per the instructions, earlier tonight. Now I've gotten into the Allies' campaign.
While Tim Curry was fantastic as Premier, J.K. Simmons as the U.S. President is just genius. Whoever casted him should get a promotion. I also like the Allies' music a whole lot. Lot's of great hard rock goin' on there. I also like the cheesecake more on the Allied side. A lot more...innocent than the Soviet debriefing chick.

If someone could help me with defending the floating fortress in the Empire campaign, that'd be sweet. But don't feel obligated to if you're not that far. I don't wanna spoil anything.

The "Attempting to connect" message is normal, I get that every time trying to log in.
This is perplexing. You've tried shutting down any local firewalls and anti-virus software, I assume. Not sure what else would be worth a try.
download hamachi, install it, and then connect to the network "PARE3" with the password "PA".
Hamachi makes a virtual LAN, and makes your computer think that the other people on the same hamachi network are on a LAN with you, so you can play with them over LAN and bypass the online service.

A dedicated air to air superiority fighter sortov should trump a antiair-antitank-antistructure generalist.
If I had a computer that could play it I'd be all over it. Damn.
I'm behind a router that might be something
whenever i hit the Log in button after hitting the Red star, it just says "could not connect to Red Alert 3 online"

WTH?
Maybe you're thinking of the second ability for jets where they return to their landing pads.
This entire game is just making my smile like a big doofus.
