Stevens is going to win in AK? Does anyone respect that decision?

Uh, might? They've been throwing millions of dollars at it for years now.

Prop 8 is holding its margin. The coastal counties, which trend no, are still coming in and could close the gap, but they're running out of bodies.

    WTF? Seriously.

And he can't even go to the poll and vote for himself.

The deal there is he will win, then he will be kicked out, but if he wins then he will be replaced by another republican.

When's the last time a president won with 52% of the vote or more?

    Bush in '88.

Before that, Reagan in '84. But that was a Mondaling.

    Before that...I dunno, Nixon? Kennedy?

LBJ probably, Kennedy didn't win big at all against Nixon, it was close.

Yea, just looked it up, LBJ won a staggering 61% of the popular vote in 64, against Goldwater. This was the election of the infamous daisy add, btw.

Actually, the Republicans would probably be well-served by running a Nixon-like candidate in '12. (They'd have been infinitely better served by running a Nixon-like candidate this time, but they're stupid so whatever.) Watergate aside, he did a pretty good job.

I stand by my prior statement calling my friend's boyfriend an idiot for voting Nader.

    Missouri is under 1k difference.

    Grrrr....

400 votes, but the only precinct left to report is Dunklin County, and that's red territory with about 1-1.2k votes left to count, I think.

Are there any absentee or military ballots involved here that have not been counted yet? Any chance of a recount? Electoral shenanigans?

So, in terms of numbers, this is complete blowout, right? I look at a electoral map, but it's all greek to me. He got way more points than the other guy, and he won impossible states, and stuff like that?

Basically, ignoring both men for a second, on a scale of 1 to 10, this win ranks about 20?

Pretty bitchin' regardless. Way to show up, America. :)

We've seen bigger victories. But yes, within reason this is about as good as it gets. A black candidate managing to plunge two states (hopefully) past the Mason-Dixon line and sewing up the entire Great Lakes region (Indiana!) is pretty big. Add Florida....yeah, big victory.

And 4% or so in the popular vote is pretty big as well.

It's neat, going back in the previous elections and watching the blue and red shift sides.

We're not sure about Stevens. Alaska apparently doesn't have counties, so we can't see where the vote is coming from. If Anchorage is outstanding, I like Begich's chances.

I know I should be ecstatic, because Obama is the new president, and my state (NC) has voted in a democratic senator, and is neck-and-neck for the presidency, which is about as good as I had hoped for. But I also found out tonight that my dog I have had for over 10 years died yesterday, while I was at college, completely unexpectedly.

Is it selfish of me to spend more time mourning tonight than celebrating?

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

They said that if it was closer than .5% in minnesota it is a forced recount. If it is more one of the campagins can pay for the recount.

I question calling a 51/48 result a blowout, electoral college or no.

    Right, it's not a blowout. It's a mandate.

Actually, I posted too quick. I meant to add that 51/48 is not a blowout. Nor is it a mandate at all. It's a false mandate, the came kind of mandate Bush had in 2004. Obama's going to need to be really careful about how he handles that.

What the fuck are you talking about? Obama is at 349 compared to Bush with 286. How is that the same?

By popular vote, not electoral vote.

    50.7% Bush 48.3% Kerry

Obama is at 52-47 according to MSNBC/CNN. This with ZA, OR, and WA still not even halfway through reporting. I would expect to see that margin go another point easy.

According to some legal definitions, he's not officially convicted until there's a sentence. The courts decided in this case, he's a free man up until he gets told how long his ass is going to jail for.
