Having played the 360 demo a few times I have to say I really like it. The first time I slide kicked a guard in the groin and then disarmed him from behind was a truly terrific feeling. But considering the amount of backlog I have I think I'll have to let this one wait til the new year.

At least it will be something to look forward to.

All these "blah blah I am a reviewer so I am going to emphasize the flaws more than anything else" is reminding me I still haven't gotten Alone in the Dark.

I can only speak for the 360 version when I say do not buy that game. I anticipated AitD so goddamn much. I watched all of the videos released for it, got myself all pumped up for the release, and picked it up day 1 to try it out.

Initially, I loved it. Then it got to the first set piece in the building. After many failed attempts, I get past the first part. I chalk it up as maybe I just wasn't used to the controls yet.

Lets fast-forward six or so hours. I believe my exact words were "This piece of shit is supposed to be Atari's last 'big title' game?"

The only reason I got six hours into it in the first place was because I wanted so badly to like the game. However, I just couldn't look past the fact that it was a buggy piece of shit that needed at least another six months of play-testing before it was ready for release. Seriously, at one point, I was driving along the road in Central Park, and my car (on a flat road, mind you) suddenly flew up in the air, glitched about four different directions, all fast-like, and plopped back down to the ground, thus letting the swarm of bat-things to catch up to me and kill me. And before anyone says anything, I know the bats can pick your car up, but there were no bats around, and it didn't act like it does when they pick you up. It just decided it wanted to fly for a few seconds. That was only one of many, many bugs I found, just in the first six hours of the game. I promptly took it to Gamestop and traded it back in.

Again, I wanted to like that game. I really did. The item combination idea was really neat, and I really liked how they dealt with inventory. Also the game looked absolutely beautiful. However, as President-elect Obama puts it "You put lipstick on a pig, its still a pig." This game was a fucking pig alright.

You don't read reviews so they can tell you what to buy and what not to buy.

You read them to get a feel for the gameplay, see what are the highlights and what are the low lights, try and figure out if it's something you'll dig.

Many times when reviewers bitch about something, there is some truth to it. It's easier to emphasize on the flaws of a good game, since, more often than not, they bring down the overall experience, and are thusly more prominent for criticism. Alone in the Dark is a good example; it has moments of brilliance that are outweighed by extremely poor design decisions. You might legitimately like the game, but it is futile to ignore its flaws, as many of them are definitely not subjective.

How you weigh these flaws is entirely subjective, however. In a game like Mirror's Edge, we know the game has flaws. Several different people have already pointed out the same problems, and in the case of 1up, shown them to us. These flaws might not be important to you, or might not impact your enjoyment of the game, but, as with most games, it is ultimately possible to improve on the formula, or fix whatever problems it has. I won't speak to the quality of these reviews, but however much you might disagree with them, they are most likely not outright lying to you. If someone says the game has shitty AI, chances are you'll run into some shitty AI at some point. In some cases they might be flat-out wrong, but when we have a fairly straightforward list of different problems that this game has, it's only wise to put them into consideration.

The Eurogamer review seems about on par with what I'm expecting from the game: Totally not a game for everyone, you're either going to really like it or really hate it, and it's got some chunky bits but overall, if you get into the game, it's more than the sum of its parts.

The length doesn't bug me at all—Eurogamer has it at 7.5 hours, and I've seen anywhere from 6 to 10 quoted—since I plan on replaying for time trials and just for shits and giggle, like I do with my other games. The inside sections feeling clunky and confusing kind of echoes how I felt in the demo, even; when outrunning the guards, after going up the stairs I went to the left for a few tries, since the wall was red that way too, and couldn't figure out why I kept dying right away when the guards caught up with me. I figured out to run the other way, though.

I'm not expecting everyone to love the game, which is why I ultimately don't care about reviews and more care about how I think I'm going to respond to the game. I can understand why fans of Assassin's Creed love the game, even though I hated it; polarizing isn't always bad.

I assume some of the bugs were worked out for the PS3 version, but that doesn't fix the asinine car sequences, tedious collecta-thon required to get to the next Act, or the maddening auto-save system.

There is genuine brilliance in the game, so I suggest you rent it, but it truly is a spectacular failure.

From the demo, I'm guessing Mirror's Edge will be a much better experience.

Its funny because I played all the way through AITD and had a great time with it and experienced no bugs at all...I loved that game, not exactly a buy, I say rent the shit out of it, as it is pretty short, unless you really want to go through it more than once. Oh and I did buy it. I wont say it was a bad choice since I loved the game but I will say it wasnt the best choice since it was so damn short and, well, I dont MIND short games, but, for me, it had no replay value.

Oh and to be on topic here, Im going to do everything I can to get ME, despite my lack of moneyz at the moment, fucking...games this year...as I LOVED the demo way too much and I think it will be too fun to play the full game. This is a fresh new experience, one that hasnt been done yet, and I loved it very much, I myself cant wait, I will not be trusting reviews on this one, oh..well, actually, the reviews arnt exactly bad for the game, an 8/10 isnt bad, but Im hating how theyre talking about it what with the whole "This game is a piece of shit. Buy it!" thing. I like to read reviews on games if only to see what everyone agrees upon, sure someone may find it more exciting than others, and others may find the bad a whole lot more annoying that others but when I see something they agree on thats what Im looking for, despite my "Play it for yourself" attitude. I really hate people judging games a whole lot before its even out or theyve even played it, like theyve played the game themselves. Not ME because we have played it, only a short...very short...demo, but even so, annoying to me.

So if anyone here who loved the shit out of the game after playing the demo, changes their mind because of these reviews. Well then...tisk tisk!

I thought the good parts were good, but the bad parts were WTF bad. You didn't really mind the
insta-kill goo or having to collect 120 malevolent tree stumps to progress the plot?

I have a whole list of "don'ts" for game design after having played that, but I'm actually pretty glad I got to see the good parts.

M'sE (to distinguish from Mass Effect) being short doesn't bother me at all. I have a backlog which includes 3 JRPGs, and a quick blast of awesome now and then is refreshing. For instance, I play Soul Calibur 4 often, despite a woefully inadequate story mode.

That's what worries me. I also worry that people have a tendency to exaggerate when they post. On another site I saw a post stating the game is 5 hours, the very next post was "wtf less than 5 hours?" In a few days they'll have it shaved down to a 45 minute game. It's like that telephone game we used to play as kids.

I'll get it on day 1 because I really like supporting new IPs that are innovative/creative and take some risk. Luckily I really love what I know of the game too. Boggles my mind when I see people saying they hope it fails because it's not a pure shooter, or because they hate EA. What a way to advance the industry!

In non-thread-title related news, the remixes are really good. Are these incorporated into the game at all, or are they just a separate marketing-related move? I'd love to hear the theme kind of sprinkled throughout the game, like the barebones chords put into the intro of the demo.

EDIT: My favorite so far is the Junkie XL remix (Junkie XL also did the really good SSX Blur soundtrack):

Agreed. It is the greatest failure of a game I've played in recent memory. So much goddamn potential in that game, wasted behind multitudes of bugs and bad design choices.

Also, I agree about the car sequence. Fucker was cool as shit the first time. However, after the 15th+ time of retrying it, I eventually just skipped it. Pissed me off, because after seeing all the videos for it, I was really looking forward to playing through that awesome setpiece.

Agreed. Fully. It really does get a bit annoying with people saying things that arnt even true. If you havent played it you cant really judge anything for yourself. And that is something people need to start realizing. The amount of good games out there are great, you just need to be willing to take the risk sometimes. I mean, sure, there are some games that really ARE crap, but not everything is that way, and people going "goddamn...it only got an 8 or a 9.....this game isnt what I thought" are a bit ridiculous.

And yeah from what Ive seen and played this game is great, I wont be backing off from it if Im able to get it or not (funds are a bit low due to this horrible surge of games this year....) I also think the story could be good, in the Eurogamer review they said the story isnt great, that doesnt mean they thought it sucked, that just means it was good, which to me (I loved the Gears of War 2 story) will most likely love this story. But another thing to remember is its all up to what you think. Everyone thought Gears 2 story was laughable while I was loving it the whole way. So people, please dont change your minds, if you loved the demo, and really wanted the full game, dont let these reviews deter you. Reminds me of Infinite Undiscovery, that game was awsome and ALL everyone did a day before it was out was rag on how shitty it was and they hadnt even played the damn game, lo and behold it came out and people liked it, of course so many people had already decided to not buy it anymore but I loved that game and so did many others.

ANYWAYS, wow, quite the rant there, just dont judge games based on other peoples opinions is what Im getting at, give it a chance if you think itll be good, I realize we dont have all the money in the world but theres nothing like buying a game you wanted and loving it very much, theres a flipside to that, yes, but Ill bet, if you believe everything the reviewers say and dont base it off your opinion, by the time you get that game, and you go in thinking its crap, it will be crap to you.

Oh and to the person who commented on me loving alone in the dark, I found the root hunting to be a tad tedious but thats really it, even then I had fun driving around the car and running things over, even though the driving was a bit...>.>...sluggish......to say the least...

Oh and I just want to say, if its 5 hours, Id rather have 5 hours of brand new gameplay and an innovative experience than 20 hours of boring do the same thing over and over again gameplay. Cause you never know, if this game does good, with all the shit the reviewers are picking on for this game the next one will kick a whole lot of ass.
    huzzah for long posts!

demo was a ton of fun (Linear games are fine, people just can't seem to admit it I suppose), but I can definitely see the gameplay getting kinda boring. I may pick this up, the demo really was a lot of fun for me.

there's seriously nothing wrong with linear games, I can't even understand why people have problems with them. You have a problem (or a situation needing to be taken care of in the form of a plot device and you go solve said situation/problem....what's the deal with it being a bad thing?).

One thing I don't get are the complaints that the game is linear. The demo doesn't feel that linear to me. I mean, sure, they all end you up at the same point, but it's not a sandbox game or anything.

I guess it kind of make sense, with the game being all about parkour and everything, but still. It's not like all the buildings will be at the same height or something like that.
