Ballot discrepancies show up more often in D-leaning districts because voter caging and disinformation has been primarily a Republican game for many years now, and because denser populations are more likely to generate errors because there are fewer volunteers-per-voter at the polls to manage the chaos. It's a lot easier to ask for and receive help at a polling station servicing 2,000 voters instead of one servicing 20,000. Couple that with the fact that urban areas vote overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic candidates and its easy to understand why most of the errors fall on one side.

Why? Because he's not a Republican? My issue isn't with Franken or Coleman, it's with people who immediately jump to hate the Republican candidate or whine about Republican candidates winning democratic elections. Just saying things like "he'd be better than Coleman" means nothing. When challenged as to why Coleman is so bad the best anyone has come up with is "well a guy died right before he was elected and so he came in based on that" and some ludicrous wrangling copy pasted from some guy's blog desperately trying to pretend that Franken has won.

It's the lazy thinking that bugs me. What's so bad about Coleman? Plenty of people are able to express what they don't like about Franken, and you'll have to do a lot better than "he's a Republican!" because believe it or not, being a Republican isn't an objectively bad thing and the belief that it is (and the reverse from conservatives) is sending the country to the fucking dogs.

Being a republican is an objectively bad thing if you're running for Senate. Because it means that you're going to get to the senate and vote for republican leadership, and probably support things like the SCHIP filibuster. If the vote was for Coleman to run shit himself maybe you'd have a point, but it isn't: it's a vote for Mitch McConnell et al.

You're half-right. Maybe two-thirds. Democrats consistently pull a substantial number of those with four-year degrees or better as well as poor minorities who happen to be uneducated due largely to social issues related to their minority status. The Deep South is by far the least-educated part of the US behind the Plains and the Rust Belt, and all of those regions have been consistently Republican in the past (although Obama successfully turned the Rust Belt, so that could be changing). Poor, uneducated whites are the backbone of the Republican machine, even if it's rich whites who provide the funding.

Yeah but this is a fairly recent phenomenon. Uneducated whites in the South historically voted for more handouts, too. It was the successful implementation of religion in Republicanism that tipped it.

EDIT: Ok Elki is going to kill us. Back on topic. Is there an official result in the Franken election yet?

Coleman has just managed to have those stupid commercials on where he is drinking coffee like he is a normal "you and me" kinda guy. Franken just can't pull that off quite the same, especially with his fame.

Are you sure you don't just dislike him because you're so liberal? So liberal you can't even stand it?

That's insane, though. Do people not understand what any of his policies mean? Or do they just like voting one side and then the other for balance?

We should have a war against the Republicans and make them leave. But it should be civilized. We could call it a "civilized war."

As for this whole thing about Republicans, I don't know what to say. I mean, I consider myself more centrist in actual political philosophy but most friends that describe themselves as Republican or, worse, Conservative just seem so out of touch with reality that it is literally (yes, literally) frightening some times.

I think the main fault is the media, though. The right-wing media does it such a disfavor by blatantly warping reality that it's impossible to take the Republican party seriously when a good number of random people go around spouting that Obama is a Muslim, or a baby-killer, thinking he is ACTUALLY a Muslim and ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY dumped a baby in a dumpster. I have heard both of these. In person. I'm not saying Democrats are altogether unilaterally brilliant philosophers either but I've never heard something so crazy from any of the liberals I personally know or have met and I've met a good many more self-described liberals/democrats than conservatives/republicans.

I apologize if this is not strictly on-topic.

No sex education isn't exactly a core Republican principle, it's a religious one. There's crossover. That doesn't make it a "republican thing". You'd also be surprised at how many self styled liberal people are against abortion. My ex-girlfriend was a hardcore liberal/socialist and part of the great deal of time she dedicated to being as mind-blowingly stupid as fucking possible was spent at anti-abortion marches with a whole group of her dumb hippie friends.

No sex education, yes. But as Tube discussed, it's not necessarily a core Republican tenet so much as a hard-right faction of the party. The abortion issue ought to be considered open for debate--certainly it makes much more sense to debate that than gay marriage.

I heard it the day after Obama won. I am not making this up. Some middle-aged white guy in the deli around the corner was telling this to the guy who was delivering bread. He concluded his insane diatribe with "well, I hope you're happy, you just elected a babykiller," took his egg sandwich, paid, and stormed out. Tube, have you ever lived here? There are frighteningly crazy people here.

I also got into an argument with an 18-year-old marine on Halloween who was absolutely 100% convinced that he was a Muslim.

I posted about both incidents in [chat] and can summon the posts for you if you like. I'm not sure if that will lend any more credence to my claim, but I don't really care. I'm not the kind of person that needs to slander to prove my point and if you feel otherwise, so be it.

As to your other point, reality is only subjective to a certain degree. Believing that Obama a Muslim is not "subjective reality" it's "being out of touch with reality." It's a slur, and it's a valid slur.

I dunno, I heard a coworker state that Obama is personally in charge of a grand voter fraud scandal with ACORN at the helm. And I've read accounts on other forums from Pubs claiming shit no less absurd than the baby-dumpster thing. It's not hard for me to believe that someone, somewhere is that stupid, even if this particular anecdote is made up. I mean, the respectable faces of conservatism like NRO are stating that Obama might be a secret Muslim and that he's pro-infanticide.

    b) A small percentage of them were Democrats, at the state/county conventions during the primary.
