Oh wow, I had no idea they brought over Mario RPG music for Brawl.

    That's a great rendition, too.

X-COM: UFO Defense gets an honourable mention for brilliantly atmospheric music. The low key track during a UFO recovery is so great in setting the mood.

To Goatmon: They didn't. Someone hacked the disc, and found a list of missing songs, including Beware the Poison Mushrooms. This is someone's idea of how it would sound.

    Oh.

Wait, so some random hacker put together an orchestra rendition?

Someone who saw the hacked list, yes.
edit: They just used an orchestra synthesizer or some such program.

Actually, after looking around, apparently the "Lost Songs" are actual music tracks on the disc that didn't make it into the official soundtrack because they weren't considered finished enough. Or something.

So, basically, there was significant (or just moderate) editing involved, not just a guy making up new versions of the songs.

That particular song was made by a dude with an editor. He posted on a forum and talked about it.

When they take video game music and arrange it for orchestra

    it is pretty consistently awesome

As Shorty mentioned in the OP, Mega Man X has some awesome metal. I would love to hear it played on real guitars and drums.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADK_l9uz_C0

Ratchet and Clank had pretty cool music
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q9tHs4bhf8

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxXuVGMBOOA

I would also recommend Jeremy Robson, McVaffe, and Zohar of OCRemix. McVaffe tends to ruin his stuff at the end with unnecessary drums, but s'allright

    Jeremy Robson (FFVI)

    McVaffe (Zelda)

You'll see what I mean about the drums in this one

    McVaffe (Okami)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD9HrJFz0jM

Zohar (Chrono Trigger)- it's worth downloading, trust me.

The best geeky thing I did when I lived in Japan was go to the Final Fantasy: Tour De Japon Concert. It was an orchestra playing music from all of the final fantasy games. This was the highlight of the concert for me. At the very end of the concert Nobuo Uematsu came out and conducted the Final Fantasy Main Theme.
Opera Scene from Final Fantasy VI

I've said this before in vidja game music threads, but

    Zelda Reorchestrated is pretty neat.

Also, I'd like to put forth that the Guilty Gear music is pretty much fucking cool.

Ah I forgot all about Banjo Kazooie

This intro is such a fucking classic.

    Intro

And the theme of the main lair, which was played to different instruments, so the intro would start sounding like whatever world you were about to enter.

    Gruntilda's Theme

also here's a bunch more BK tracks

You're thinking of someone else. Uematsu only does sound and music, he's too busy to do anything else. Are you thinking of Tetsuya Nomura (directed Advent Children)?

Hey, no problem. It was just that everything I'd read on the guy said he works all the time on music.
It's weird being tall in Japan, but cool because I'd scare people and could see over any crowd.

Fandy: That's the response I was secretly hoping for.

Yeah, that guy owes me like five rimjobs for making all male characters into bishonen ladyboys and for not being able to design a setting that doesn't look like the backdrop in some j-pop music video.

FF: Crystal Chronicles has some of my favorite music, it has a very nice Celtic touch. Plus, it really makes you feel like the country bumpkin you were in that game (I swear they are using kazoos for some of the songs). The GBA connectivity thing was such a tragedy if you weren't equipped for it.

The story for Crystal Chronicles was pretty cool, but it gets repetitive quickly, since you're given repeats of the same backstory every time you returned to an area.

Gameplay was kind of meh, but it had some great atmosphere.

Graphics and music were both top notch for a gamecube game; The engine was really polished, but the music was really the best part of that game.

The opening sequence is easily my favorite now and forever, both for the video and the music.
