I totally finished the thread title in my head before I opened it
A Better Tomorrow is a great, great film.
A Better Tomorrow 2 is... great in a very different way... especially the english dub... It does have the greatest final shot in cinema history.
The main actors, mortally wounded, covered in blood, sitting in high backed chairs covered in blood in a mansion filled with blood and dead bodies, sitting together contentedly. The one in the middle has a samurai sword in his lap, of course.
Hard-Boiled is incredible, and any one who fancies themselves an action movie fan owes it to themselves to see it. The hallway shootout - 2 minutes, 43 seconds (two takes spliced together to appear as one). Awesome. The gunplay has, as far as I'm concerned, never been topped in any movie before or since.
The Killer is like the action of Hard-Boiled with the awesome story and character work of A Better Tomorrow. Not to be missed.
I've seen Bullet in the Head but only once... I remember it being enjoyable.
Saw one the other day called Time and Tide directed by Tsui Hark. Its got the same zany gun play style as films like Hard Boiled, but the finale has them gun fighting while abseiling and rappelling around a crumbling tenement block.
wait, the long take in Hard Boiled was actually two takes? where the hell was the cut?
Not sure exactly, Woo mentions it on the dvd commentary that I have. I want to say its when they are in the elevator and have their bit of dialogue halfway through the shooting and the exploding. Actually the commentary tracks for both Hard boiled and the Killer are among the more interesting ones I've listened to. Woo talks about being mad that people claimed he stole the 'gun in the flower box' from terminator 2, but Hard boiled came out the same year as T2 and he says had no idea about that scene.
i love this thread and basically anything by jackie chan, chow yun fat, tony jaa, and jet li. even their american stuff like replacement killers and rush hour and kiss of the dragon and unleashed. though war was pretty dumb. and now i'm rambling.
but yeah, has anyone seen the dead or alive trilogy by takeshi miike? because hot damn those are pretty awesome as well as being ridiculously stupid

if im remembering the right movie, the first dead or alive movie had the most ridiculous ending ive ever seen of anything ever

I would like to reiterate that Hero is awesome and if you don't think it is beautiful or exciting then I guess you've been watching too much fisting porn and maybe your aesthetic sense is broken. The acting is good, the story is good, the fighting is awesome, the colors are excellent, and it is a nice homage to Roshomon or however it's spelled because I can't look it up to check.
I don't suppose you guys could recommend a good, recent martial-arts flic in the vein of Ong Bak (i.e. the less CG and wires the better)? I watched Ong Bak and Chocolate, by the same director, and now I've really got an itch for more. The Protector just didn't do it for me, something about it seemed less harsh in terms of the movie's sets and shooting. Ong Bak just looked rough, and I loved it.

I really liked hero, but a a whole half of the movie was devoted to writing, and that's pretty goddamn silly

go back to bed son, the grownups are talking
It's so boring I cant believe it
It tries to be artistic, but it just isnt.

you apparently try to appreciate art but fail
i will forgive you if you've only seen the theatrical release in the US, otherwise you should maybe reevaluate your definition of "artistic"
Well I have seen a theatrical release in europe.
I think I'm very well versed in art as such
The problem is, the only thing Hero is going for is aesthetics, but somehow it fails. The narrative is laughable. Add that up and you get poop.
