people who don't like catcher in the rye are pretty reasonable

I mean, it's a fantastic book, but it's ok if you don't like it

I mean there's a lot going on there, I can see how that if you ignored the layers and layers of subtext it would be frustrating

    it's not like, a blog

Yeah, even if you're trying to teach some sort of lesson, making a completely unlikeable protagonist is not the way to go.

Is cool cooler than pretty cool? Or is pretty cool cooler? I should know this street lingo stuff.

    its ice cold

I was racing through it, and I don't even lurk in SE++ any more, so the more I remembered someone, the more adjectives they got in front of cool.

Also, if I remembered a specific instance with someone, then I would actually write a full line.

    Go me.

i appreciate that some people can relate to that but it just frustrated me

that year i had to read The Scarlet Letter, The Awakening, Catcher in the Rye, and Wuthering Heights

it is entirely possible that by the time we got to Salinger i was reduced to a gibbering lunatic

who the hell thought Beowulf was cobbled together inexpertly

    it is fantastic

    what is wrong with people

Grundtvig, in the 1820s, criticised its lack of unity. In 1826, Conybeare complained about the digressions, and said it was too long. 1836, Kemble suggested that it was composed o different layers of composition. Ellmüller, in 1840, called it an inartistic patchwork of interpolated lines.

Basically, it wasn't until Tolkein wrote his article "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" in 1936 that the weight of opinion swung towards Beowulf being a unified whole.

Yeah, even if you're trying to teach some sort of lesson, making a completely unlikeable protagonist is not the way to go.

I got in a fight with my english teacher last year about this book. "This is the best book ever! OH MY GOD!"

From the back of the room, I pipe up: "Uh. No. Unless you want to read a book about a crying little bitch pick something else."

And thus did the shitstorm start

Holden was an ass who never had any sense of responsibility for the entire book, and had a specific set of mannerisms that showed up not only in his speech patterns, but also in his mental fucking narration.

I hate that book so much.
