Final Fantasy VII, NA. The first time I loved a box art, because it conveys the feel of the game perfectly - you are this guy right here, and you're about to take on some serious shit. It's the angle that does it.

A nice little mockup of what that rumored remake could look like.

I'll spoiler the whole post for V-scroll purposes.

Table of Contents, in case you just wanna' skip...
    -Metal Gear (MSX)
    -God Hand (PS2)
    -Way of the Samurai 1 + 2 (PS2)
    -Hitman Trilogy (PS2)
    -Okami
    -Resistance: Fall of man (PS3)
    -Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
I always liked the old Metal Gear cover. Apparently the guy who made it was instructed to make it look like that dude from Terminator (Michael Biehn).
    578853_18221_front.jpg

Lots of awesome stuff on the PS2's already been listed, so I'll just throw out a few that stand out to me personally...

I think the cover for God Hand deserve a mention, not for any artistic merit but simply because that dude's head is getting punched off.
    Win - NA/EU cover.
    932558_74690_front.jpg

Fail - JP cover. NA wins! :^:
    932558_75989.jpg
    Looks like that shit hurts.

The Way of the Samurai games have nice clean, iconic covers...
    536780_front.jpg

    915115_54735_front.jpg

And I may well be alone in this, but I always thought the Hitman PS2 trilogy had great cover design - always very clean, and the images give a real sense of the character's elegance and badassery.
    1196141102-00.jpg
    539985_front.jpg
Another example of the NA/PAL version being better than the JP - they kinda' gummed theirs up with superfluous gun porn.

    (JP cover - fail)
    539985_26965.jpg

    919983_53285_front.jpg
These covers really capture the spirit of the games. I'm cold-as-ice and I'm comin' ta' gitcha'!

Also, Okami is worth a mention (always, in every conversation).
    NA cover, not too shabby.
    920500_54203_front.jpg

JP cover. Dig the tree and use of Ammy concept art!
    920500_54202_front.jpg

On the current gen, I really like the covers for the first Resistance and Valkyria Chronicles, each for totally different reasons.
    928399_67462_front.jpg
I think this one works for a lotta' reasons. The dominant Chimeran skull is alone a very striking image. Like the cover for Dead Space, it goes on to tell you everthing you need to know about the game: The era is WWII-ish, and there's crazy mutant/alien bastards to kill. That's all you need.

    Valkyria
    942165_99991_front.jpg
Valkyria Chronicles on the other hand I love just because of the blazing color of Sylvaria's hair and eyes against the ruddy brown of war, and the introduction of the two principle protagonists below.

The JP cover leans towards the Squad-ness of the game, but compared to the NA cover it doesn't begin to really stand out. The title is better, sure, but a happy-to-be-together bunch of anime-lookin' warriors on the cover of a game? Been there, done that to death. The dominant image of Sylvaria on the NA cover gets it the win from me.

    "from wiki"
One of Panzer Dragoon's major artistic influences was Moebius' (Jean Giraud) Arzach, a comic book series created by the French artist. He even contributed in the creative process of Team Andromeda's game with original artwork.

So the US version got rid of Moebius artwork in favor of....girl with gun on dragon in polygons :(

Actually, that's the EU art. I can tell by the black sidebar.

US Saturn games have a white one.
