    It means he did such a horrendous job as an Oscar host he paved the way for someone else from a completely different field (Hugh Jackman, who's an actor, and not even primarily a comedic one) than would normally be looked into for Oscar host.

    i.e. Only a Republican sucking at governance for eight years could prepare the country for a black man as president.
