Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Considering the Wa. State political system is notorious for not getting anything done, I'm glad they got this one through in near record time. Both have done much for children all over with, Childs Play, when you see many other's that are quite rich that don't do squat for anyone at all.
Express your opinion!
This is an opinion-based forum, after all. Don't hide your thoughts, we want to know them. This goes double for thread-starters - threads which consist of link+'discuss' will be mocked'n'locked, no matter how timely or interesting they may be. You can try again, or someone else will.
You might want to edit to avoid this just getting locked.
Whereas, they are basically officially awesome now.
Whereas, this better not mean no more cock jokes.
Now therefore be it resolved that the op shoulda oughta actually said something in his post.
Edit: Behold! OPinions!
And I guess I should add that, hell, if it's a slow day, this is good politics. And if politicians are supposed to fix everything wrong with the world, well then, this is as good a place as any to start. Honouring people who do good things is in and of itself a good thing too.
To D&D it a little - "Is it the place of a state government to pass resolutions like this given the Recession and the fact that people are dying in Iraq", or if that doesn't get your goat "Anyone who refuses to support this resolution, either in vote form, or morally, is the modern day equivalent of the Prime Minister of South Africa during the Apartheid Years as all laws or resolutions restrain free movement of viable human beings are evil in some way"
Here is the text of the resolution btw

SENATE RESOLUTION
8640
By Senators Jarrett, McAuliffe, and Fraser
WHEREAS, The greater Seattle area is home to over 45 video game companies, making the
video game industry in Washington one of the largest in the nation; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Holkins, a comic writer, and Mike Krahulik, a cartoonist and artist, both
originally from Spokane, Washington, collaborated to create an online comic about video games
called Penny Arcade in the fall of 1998; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik recently celebrated the comic's 10th anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, In 2004, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik launched the first annual Penny
Arcade Expo, a gaming festival in Bellevue, Washington; and
WHEREAS, By 2008, the Penny Arcade Expo has grown to become the largest game
convention in the United States, with over 58,500 video game enthusiasts attending the Penny
Arcade Expo at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in August 2008; and
WHEREAS, The Penny Arcade Expo attracts thousands of tourists from around the globe
to visit the city of Seattle while attending the convention, and has served to further reinforce Seattle's

WHEREAS, In 2003, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik created the Child's Play Charity, an

worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Child's Play Charity has raised over 4.5 million dollars for sixty different
Children's Hospitals since it was established, including Washington's own Seattle Children's and
Sacred Heart Children's Hospitals;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate officially
recognize the accomplishments of Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik in becoming widely accepted
leaders in the computer and video game industries, encouraging industry growth through
scholarships, and advancing Washington State as a hub of the gaming industry through the presence
of Penny Arcade Expo; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate honor Jerry Holkins and
Mike Krahulik for their hard work and dedication to improving the lives of hospitalized children
worldwide through their creation and continued work with Child's Play Charity; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted
by the Secretary of the Senate to Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik.
I, Thomas Hoemann, Secretary of the Senate,
do hereby certify that this is a true and
correct copy of Senate Resolution 8640,
adopted by the Senate
March 5, 2009
But this is still fantastic news, and I wonder how many old state senators are now going to be inclined to look up the comic to see what it is they just absent-mindedly honored... And then be horrified.
Damn those guys and all they have done for us. Damn them all to hell.
If I was kidnapped, woke up in a lab, told they were going to replace my vocal cords with those of Tony Jay, and lock me in a sound booth until the day I die I would look those bastards right in the eye and say "Alright you sons of bitches lets do this. This one is for the children."
To D&D it a little - "Is it the place of a state government to pass resolutions like this given the Recession and the fact that people are dying in Iraq", or if that doesn't get your goat "Anyone who refuses to support this resolution, either in vote form, or morally, is the modern day equivalent of the Prime Minister of South Africa during the Apartheid Years as all laws or resolutions restrain free movement of viable human beings are evil in some way"
Well....
State Government... 'State'
They are not the ones that send troops to war. They only deal with inter-state issue's. This is the Washington State government. Not the U.S. Senate. And Wash state did pass a resolution before condeming the war.
This resolution was more about the state showing their appreciation for what two ordinary individuals have accomplished and given back to both the state and children worldwide.
Considering the Wa. State Senate is notorious for not getting anything done, I'm glad they got this one through in near record time.
You, uh, you do realize that this is the WA State Legislature "not getting anything done", right?
I mean, it's still cool for Mike and Jerry, but it's the legislative equivalent of procrastination.
if this is procrastination, it's at least the GOOD kind. Maybe Mike and Jerry don't need honouring for penny arcade itself( as cool as it would be to big it up for cock jokes), but starting Child's Play was a Big Damn Thing, and deserves respect.
And yes, they'll be all, it's not us that made Child's play, it's You Guys, and the Power of Heart!
But man, they had it coming. they can just deal. No good deed goes unpunished.

Hell...
All of the political offices in Wa. don't get anything done. It's almost worse then the Volgon form of government.
I was being silly in my example about Iraq, on the basis that in this forum (and indeed in any internet forum) one often sees spurious linkages to the topic at hand. I was doing my part to start this process off. Ironically?

I am comforted by Richard Dawkins’ theory of memes. Those are mental units: thoughts, ideas, gestures, notions, songs, beliefs, rhymes, ideals, teachings, sayings, phrases, clichés that move from mind to mind as genes move from body to body. After a lifetime of writing, teaching, broadcasting and telling too many jokes, I will leave behind more memes than many. They will all also eventually die, but so it goes. - Roger Ebert, I Do Not Fear Death

I was hoping for a long discussion on the definition of irony:cry:
This is pretty cool. Politicians like being able to pass feel-good bills every once in awhile, and this has the benefit of making people feel good wherever there are PA fans.
edit: Article from Kotaku
Spoiler:
The Washington State Senate has gone to the trouble of approving a bill that serves as nothing but a tip of the hat for the creators of Penny Arcade, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik.
Senate resolution 8640 - introduced on March 5 and passed on March 5 - honours the contribution the pair (both originally from Spokane, Washington) have made to the state, the games industry and to children's charities across the world courtesy of their Child's Play initiative.
You can read the full account here, which is as heart-warming as it is terribly formal.
If faith is just a silent tribute, mine is just a desperate act.
For all we know, this took 10 minutes of the day and it's a nice honor for two guys who do a shit ton of charity and, as we can read in the resolution, tourist work for the City, State and Country.

It probably wasn't even that. I can't speak for american politicians, but I think it'd be akin to the way a board will pass a motion of thanks for a guest speaker. It takes all of about two minutes.
From what I gathered, it was several hours actually. The Legislature had two speech's and then voted electronically. The Senate had two speech's and then voted roll call style.
And with politician's giving speech's, its pretty safe to say, oh... 4 hours total?

It's like when you go to the mall to buy Dead Rising, and the mall gets attacked by Zombies
Because 9% think it's too high, and shouldn't be cut! 9% of respondents could not fully
get their arms around the question. There should be another box you can check for, "I
have utterly no idea what you're talking about. Please, God, don't ask for my input."

Well it's nice to know that at least one state legislator has either heard about Penny Arcade or knows someone who has heard about Penny Arcade.
This actually wouldn't surprise me...you figure at least some staffers must play the vidja.
But it's nice to know that somebody finally saw fit to recognize some of what they do. I think Child's Play is what did it, though really organizing a convention that brings tens of thousands of tourists to the city probably helped as well.
I never could have imagined this nine years ago, when PA was merely one of several webcomics I read regularly.
