So, I finally pulled the trigger on a closeout, last-matte-screen-ever MacBook Pro, it's here, and it's time for the Migration Assistant.
I was all ready to string a cat5 between the PowerBook and the MBP and use network mode, but I've discovered the Migration Assistant in Tiger on the PB doesn't have that mode. I tried copying the app from the new machine, but it won't launch (must be Leopard-only).
I can go out and get a firewire cable and do it the old-fashioned way, but what's the point of network migration assistant if it can only migrate from a new computer to another new one? Is there somewhere I can download an updated version for Tiger?

DO NOT migrate stuff from a ppc system to an intel system. It's one of the sure fire ways to fuck your new system. A better (longer) way to do it is to just reinstall everything you use.

Hmm. Aren't there settings to just copy your files and not the apps/settings?
Although I guess I wouldn't necessarily need the assistant for that.

In regards to PPC -> Intel, yeah moving apps would be bad but user files really shouldn't matter. I believe there are ways to tell it to copy just your user files (checkboxes), however, I hate Migration Assistant. Seems to break something every time I've used it.
Speaking of migrating...I discovered a neat trick recently. You can copy your entire home folder over to a new computer (must do this as root). When you're done copying your folder, go into system preferences, create an account with the same name as your home folder. Leopard warn/ask you that there is a home folder with that name already there, would you like to use it? Click yes/ok and Leopard will fix the permissions on the folder and set it as the home folder. Makes moving accounts to new computers really, really easy.

Yeahg, it's pretty awesome. means I've had the same user account since about 2003 or so |
