My only problem with Hexen would be the eye-melting textures. They never bothered to break up the pattern so looking at anything was like seeing into eternity
Thats not Hexen....

In any event, check out the N64 port of Hexen. Its basically the PC game, but with better graphics. Kicks ass. Only downside is that its kind of tough to strafe. Of course, its easier to strafe than using the ridiculous pre-WASD default setup Hexen on PC has.
Blargh, I meant Heretic. HeXen would have been badass if it were more like Doom and less like...whatever it is.

No it wouldn't have. Its badass because it isn't like Doom. Doom is perfect, you can't out-Doom Doom.

Hexen is like a puzzle/exploration/shooting game hybrid.

Disliking the control schemes of Doom/Hexen/Heretic/Strife has been moot since ZDoom.

Anybody else find it ironic that a thread for old DOS games is NSF56K ?

Also, one old DOS game that I still find addictive (it's a shame I've never been able to find the full version -- and it's not like the original programmer is likely to sell more copies now...) is called Reaping the Dungeon.

It's a Rogue/Nethack clone with some really cool and original ideas (and huge levels).

So you win points for both a jill of the jungle and masters of orion mentions. You lose points for neglecting this.

Unless I missed it, of course. Sorry if I did!

Probably include some gameplay.

Ooops, missed it on page nine.

Besides SC2k, Colonization and some Kings Quest, I can contribute Conquest of the New World.

It was sort of like a Colonization meets Age of Empires sort of thing. It doesn't run in XP's emulated DOS (except the tactical combat simulator), but it does run in DOSbox. I'm disappointed that my DOS game selection is so meager. Otherwise it's all 'old crappy version of MegaMan', 'weird version of Mario', Orbiter, and a bunch of games I can't remember beyond their storage on 5" floppies.

What was the name of the EGA game where you would control robots and.. Dagnabit I don't remember the objective, I know you spent a lot of time avoiding other robots. It was top-down and blue, pink, and purple seemed to be the only colors it liked. I can't remember anything else about it.

Quad something?

Since every other sierra game has been mentioned at least twice, it's about time that some one brings up their best series:

You know, they would get 40 dollars from me if they would just pack all their old shareware games into single DS-cartrdige.
Crud. I used to play Hocus Pocus, Clydes Adventure, and Captin Comic all the time (I each one with the other cuz I got them at the same time). Some of the most frustrating games of my child hood.

Captain Comic:

I'd get so far in the game and when I finally thought I had reached the end it just kept going and going >.< !

Clyde's Adventure:

You use your wand to make certain blocks disappear to give you access to different areas. Whenever you use the wand, jump, or even take a single step your energy would deplete.

Uuugghhhhh!!!

Captain Comic was neat, and very hard. Mmm, blastola cola!

Clyde's Adventure was also hard, and the way his nose wobbled while you ran was slightly disturbing. His scream when you fall into lava was great though.

Loved that too. I remember it had a great story, especially for a shareware game... Can't remember what the story actually was though.

Other shareware games I played heaps...

Electro Man

Skyroads

And..Oh my god. I just remembered the best shareware game ever.. my sister and I used to play it multiplayer. It was Italian I think.. called Lezac or something. I think there might've been more words in the title. Can barely find anything about it online.

It was a platformer type game with 2-player co-op play, where you had to blow up platforms and buildings. Each level would have a different quota of stuff you had to blow up (most things were destructible IIRC). You had different sized bombs to throw around. There were also enemies and stuff to collect -_- Awesome fun waiting til the other player was under a massive structure and then blowing up the foundations of that structure with the biggest bomb, making it all come down on them.

And when you blew stuff up it wasn't like it would just disappear either. It would go flying. The stuff on top of it would go flying, and come down all around you. Hectic!

Wow. I used to play this so much. Always used the black car (one of the initial 3 you get). And I still remember 'They call it the belly of the BEAST!'. And Atlantis was awesome.

I remember that one, thought it was called Electrobody for some reason. There was this one point in the sharware version I got stuck and couldn't continue because it looked like the level needed you to go into a hole that was too small for the character or something. Was it actually possible to finish that shareware game, or was that an actual game stopping bug I ran into?

For some reason I remember and wonder about that even after a freaking decade.

Darn, how do you mean nostalgia? I loved this game when I was younger and played it so much.

Just watching the video makes me all woozy inside.

Oh that's right, Electrobody! That's what the version I had was called too...I have a feeling I got it off a PC Format coverdisk. The game was renamed to Electro Man later I think. I remember spending days trying to get to bits of the level I hadn't been to yet..I vaguely remember the bit you're talking about, but not sure if that was one I figured out or not. I think there were tricks involved in getting to certain areas.. Never finished the shareware version either.

I enjoyed this:
I never played it. For some reason, it was called Little Big Adventure in Europe.
Because that was its title. It was changed to Relentless in the US, probably so as to not 'confuse' people. Same reason Innocent Until Caught 2: Presumed Guilty was shortened to Guilty, and Another World turned into Out Of This World.

The disc I bought is called Relentless, but I've always known it as Little Big Adventure. Which is weird, I guess.

Old school Sierra adventure games are notorious for having obscure puzzle solutions.

Holy crap - I completely forgot about the Manhunter games!!! Those were both awesome!

I've got fond memories of just about everything up to King's Quest 5, at which point I just got interested in other game types. I've considered, a few times, picking up the King's Quest or Space Quest compilations, just for old times' sake.

Another favorite just occurred to me, though I don't remember if it was among the last of the DOS games or the first of the Win95 games - Carmageddon! I remember getting huge style (and splatter!) bonuses for spinning out through crowds of pedestrians, and ramming opposing cars to eliminate them from races... Lotsa fun, that one.
