As a near life-long Punisher fan, I was very happy with this story and gladly accepted it as part of the character's background.

Oh I didn't mean to imply any dislike for the explanation: I totally agree with you that it's necessary in order for his character to exist alongside all the things that happen around him. I'm not a Punisher fan (not out of dislike, but just lack of interest), but I found the explanation quite satisfying.

I think it was the origin of MAX Punisher, as Ennis always has bits of recurring story you have to remember. Spoiler: show spoiler hide spoiler When Micro has Frank in the interrogation room, he makes specific reference to "the darkness" that called out to him in Vietnam, that gave him a war that never ends. In Punisher: The End, Frank makes reference to this as an old man, likening the War on Terror as futile as his personal war. That war leads to the end of the Earth.
