Happy Fifth Birthday, Playstation Portable!

psp3000.png

From Wikipedia:

The Playstation Portable (officially abbreviated PSP) is a handheld game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Development of the console was announced during E3 2003, and it was unveiled on May 11, 2003 at a Sony press conference before E3 2004. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004,in North America on March 24, 2005, and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005.

The PlayStation Portable is the first handheld video game console to use an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its primary storage medium. Other distinguishing features of the console include its large viewing screen, robust multi-media capabilities, and connectivity with the PlayStation 3, other PSPs, and the Internet.

Sales of the PSP have (with cyclical exceptions) lagged behind its main competitor, the Nintendo DS. Nevertheless, the console is "the most successful non-Nintendo handheld game system ever sold". After the release of a remodeled, slimmer, and lighter version of the PlayStation Portable, titled Slim & Lite, in early September 2007, sales quadrupled in the United Kingdom the following week and increased by nearly 200% in North America for the month of October. The Slim & Lite had a minor redesign including a new screen and inbuilt microphone, and has since been followed by the PSP Go.

The PSP first dropped in the US on March 24th, 2005, in Japan a little over 4 months earlier, and in Europe about 6 months later in September.

So let's celebrate 5 years of PSP! What are your experiences with the system? Do you have one? What are your favorite games? Let's hear your stories.

I'd *kinda* like one, but other than going to work/coming home, I'm pretty much a homebody so portables are lost on me.

That and I'd hafta mod the crap out of it to play SNES/etc. stuff on it.

It's the only system I've ever had break on me that I didn't immediately go out and fix.

I was given one a few years later and besides the occasional game of Lumines or SFA3 it mainly collects dust while holding down important paper work on my desk.

I like my PSP quite well. I do find that games I own on UMD are infinitely harder for me to bother playing through than stuff I pick up off PSN. Kind of annoying.

One of my favorite platforms of all time. It's shame I never really play it. Although, now that I have a PS3 I have no excuse not to get some digital content.

I don't think the launch PSP-1000 was well built at all, seeing as how mine came to pieces after a very short fall onto a not entirely soft not entirely hard surface.

My "new" PSP-2000 however is decently well constructed and can go for more than 4 hours without a charge.

It's still the only portable system I've ever regretted buying and I own the Lynx, Virtual Boy, a crate full of NGPC, a Game Gear or Two, a Nomad, and yes, a Virtual Boy. It's odd because good games are out on it now but whenever I pick it up I realize I'd rather be doing something else.

I think a lot of that comes from external factors and not the PSP itself. I mean, the PSP is competing against the DS. In comparison to the greatest gaming system ever (IMO, you probably won't agree. Please don't dogpile me for it) of course it's going to come up short. I'm sure you could make the same comparison to the PS2 versus Xbox/GC, but it's late and too tired to come up with it.

And then not to mention the rise of the iPhone, which kinda killed any momentum it had for multimedia features. Also, Sony flip flopped on the system so much and was never really sure what it was supposed to be.

In summary: We don't play our PSPs because there's just so much to take our attention away from it, not due to any lack of quality.

Pretty much. My iPhone serves every last bit of mobile multimedia, Internet access, communication, reading (eBooks), and occasional casual gaming (like Bejeweled, the kind you can wrap up while taking a dump). So all that leaves is gaming. I realize that the games on the PSP are, in my opinion, far superior - I just can't be bothered to carry the thing around and worry about recharging it.

I basically only use it on flights, long drives, and the occasional Summer evening when I just want to lie in the grass while the dog walks himself.

My Playstation Pornable used to get quite a lot of use for the first 12 months or so, I played loads of Lumines and Metal Gear Acid, then a cat peed on it and I couldn't afford to replace it. I stopped following releases for it but it seemed to me as though there were few games I wanted for it.

Now I have a DS and an iPod Touch and I just don't miss it.

It's a shame as it was a gorgeous piece of kit, but there's no room in my life for another anymore.

I use my PSP damn near every day (especially since my wife lost my DS).

I generally will play at least half an hour before bed, and I take it with me to school. All I do is play (legit) games on it, though I kinda wish I had one of the older, easier to modify ones so I could play older games on it.

My intention is to DL everything off the store, so the Go won out for me - got it last week. I really like it so far (aside from one stuck pixel that drives me nuts), though I haven't played much on it. A little bit of Chains of Olympus and like, fifteen hours of Patapon.

Patapon is insidiously addictive. Good thing BioShock 2 came out, or I would be playing it still.

I've bought and sold four (four!) PSPs in my lifetime

I've had the same problems with it that everyone else in this thread does

It's nice but nowhere near as good or as deep as my Lite, which I've owned three of and played the fuck out of

Eh. It'll all be worth it when the absolute best game on the system (VC 2) comes out later this year

I had a cat that would on occassions pee on my bedroom floor if the litter tray wasn't immaculate. The PSP along with a half dozen books were lying on said floor when he decided to strike one night. I picked up the psp next day to play some Lumines and what appeared to be a gallon of piss gushed out of it. One dead PSP there and then.

I like the PSP but the inconvenience of UMD's and the shitty battery life generally end with me never actually playing the thing. I don't think I've put much (if any) time into the thing since the double hitter GoW: Chains of Olympus and FFVII: Crisis Core releases. Which was like two years ago...

I celebration of my 5th year of PSP ownership, I'm going to eBay just about all the games I own because they don't have any lasting replayability. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought Tomb Raider Legends...

But with those monies I'll be buying a few PSP games; got my eye on Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice and Ridge Racer 2 for starters.

Castration actually could have solved the peeing problem.

It took a really long time for PSP to become interesting for me, but now the game library seems to be getting better and better all the time. My pet peeve is that most of the games that I want seem to be coming from Atlus and other US companies, without a European release, and thanks to the Lik-Sang fiasco many online stores don't ship PSP games outside of USA.

At least Half-Minute Hero is coming this month.

I still don't understand what Sony was thinking with the PSP Go. Their online catalog still blows, you can never buy used/cheap games from retail shops (or friends), and the damn thing is so much more expensive.

Hell, if it weren't for Square Enix, I probably wouldn't even own a PSP (since every game I do own is from them, save PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, which caused many sleepless nights)

I really wish more games lived up to the PSP's potential. I love the screen and general feel. I'm glad I modded it so I get some more use, but if games can look like God of War and Metal Gear... I dunno. At least I get Armored Core and Persona ports? Oh, and effing Monster Hunter.

I'm the kind of person who really just chills around the house and plays handhelds, rarely using them during travel.

I pick up games for my PSP every once in a while, but I usually don't finish them. I try though, and I have finished a few. Castlevania was fantastic and so were both Megaman games. I'm currently working on Shadow of Destiny (Planning to finish this) and I'll be getting Lunar at the end of the month.

I just really hate the D-pad though. It's so bad. The nub helps when you can use either/or, but in games like Powered Up you need the D-pad. The hardest part in that whole game, and I beat it with every character on every difficulty, was one jump in Time Man's stage or whatever his name was that required you to grab a ladder over spikes. You need to press diagonally up and right to grab it, and that is so hard to do on the PSP D-pad. I died countless times from just not grabbing the ladder. I think there's exactly one more jump like it in the Wily stages, but the ladder is longer.

There's still a few games for it I want to play, and I intend to finally finish Half Minute Hero one of these days. But yeah, for all the negativity it's gotten over the years, it's actually a good system with a decent library of games. I like it.

Minus the cat pee, this is pretty much my experience. I'm a huge portable gaming fan, but the combination of 1) going back to school and not working as much, reducing my morning-commuter gaming time, and 2) getting an iPhone, meant that the PSP has been warming the bench for nearly the past 8 months. I actually ended up selling all of my games, and will end up selling or trading in the 2000 itself soon; I didn't see anything on the horizon that really called out to me, and I needed the Amazon credit for books. :( I'll miss not being able to play through the glorious FFT War of the Lions port, and I'll miss not getting to play VC 2, but I just didn't have the time to really justify keeping it.

I love my PSP Go. Part of that is that it's all mine and I don't have to share it with the family like the home consoles. Part of that is that I love Digital Distribution (I've probably spent more time & money on XBLA than I have on retail 360 games) and I'm a little ADD so I love being able to turn on the system and scroll through my game list while deciding what to play. Part of that is that I don't have an iPhone/iTouch and I only have an old original DS which is rather scratched up due to Ouendan so the PSP's screen looks so much better than the alternative. And part of it is just that the PSP's library more closely fits my own tastes than the alternative - FF7, Suikoden, and RE2 on the go! Lots of Strategy/RPGs! Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe! Great Action/Platformers like Prinny, Castlevania, and Mega Man remakes!

I love my PSP. It has a huge library with a lot of awesome games, being able to pick games up from the PSN store is pretty nice, and it also sees consistent use as an mp3 player and internet radio streamer when I'm in bed before I go to sleep.

All in all I think it's a pretty nice system, and it really has to be to have made it this far against Nintendo. I only wish Sony would advertise the thing a little more.
