    Bullshit. What made Firefly as good as it was was the chemistry between the actors, the inventiveness of the setting, and the pace of the dialogue. You can have all those without River.

    Why is she an important character? Because we're told she is? Sorry. Not good enough for me. More to a point, in what way is she so very intelligent? Again, because the writers say so? Fuck that. The fact is, we're just supposed to accept her boring, same-every-week shitfits, and what her brother says about her, and find her this fascinating thread that holds the whole goddamned thing together.

    EDIT: Then I don't like Firefly anymore. To make such an ill-conceived, terribly executed character the center of your arc is pretty much an unforgivable fuckup anyhow.

    I disagree that she is ill-conceived or terribly executed at all.

    River was the McGuffin -- The reason the firefly crew was on the run, the motivation of the alliance, the primary source of mystery for the audience to focus on.

    Also a great character.
