As for the Dead or Alive movie, they skipped out on the theatrical run and instead sent it straight to DVD. Honestly, I think the franchise would be better adapted to animation then anything else.

I actually thought DoA was a good film for what it was. Vapid and entertaining and not at all deep. And the characters looked suprisingly faithfull to the series.

Plus I like looking at boobs.

So who wants to come over to my place and watch the Super Mario Brothers movie?

I'm there.

I got that on DVD for 5 bucks a few years ago at Best Buy. Totally worth it. I put that in the DVD player whenever I need cheering up.

The Wizard is still the best Video game related movie, though.

To piggyback off of what some of you stated about Uwe boll.....

When rumors appeared that Uwe Boll expressed interest in a Metal Gear Solid movie, and claimed to have been given a script to read, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima responded in his audioblog HIDECHAN, "Absolutely not! I don't know why Uwe Boll is even talking about this kind of thing. We've never talked to him. It's impossible that we'd ever do a movie with him."

House of the Dead II was a straight to DVD release.

Let me just say that it was much better than the first one. It also has a crazy marine in it that looks and acts a lot like Jeffery Combs.

It was a pretty decent B zombie movie.

Edit: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was awesome. Don't compare it to the games and it is a beautiful sci-fi movie.

It was just a missed opportunity in that it had nothing to do with "Final Fantasy."

Have you seen House of the Dead II?
Ye gods, there's a second one?

Taking place shortly after the original, government operatives are sent to investigate a new infection that has rapidly spread across fictional "Cuesta Verde University". Professor Dr. Curien (Sid Haig), obsessed with the idea of bringing the dead back to life, has accidentally created a new generation of "hypersapiens", or zombies. The operatives must bring back a first-generation blood sample from a zombie in order to create a vaccine against the virus, which is spread through biting. However, tensions between AMS and special forces, stemming from the apparent inexperience of the latter, create conflict within the team. The divided parties now face an army of highly evolved zombies that can easily chew through their body armor. Eventually the operatives discover that the original hypersapien is Alicia, from the first House of the Dead film. The Operatives are unsuccessful in their 2 attempts to secure a sample. The last two remaining members sent to get the sample returns to the city where the chief was bitten to find it in ruin, possibly overrun by zombies.

My vote goes to Doom.
Seriously, What was the point of this film? I had semi high hopes for it (stupid me...)
It had nothing to do with the actual fuckin game it was SUPPOSED to be based off, and Hell Knight's are now using wrestling moves???
And jesus wept...the whole deal with the wheelchair guy getting turned into a Pinky?

Comeon, true they messed with the source material somewhat, but it was a better adaptation than many. Count yourself lucky Boll didn't direct it.

So what films are there? Quick summary (and my opinion)

Mario - Hilarious
Mortal Kombat 1 (and 2...ugh) - 1 is actually pretty fun. The sequel...not so much.
Street Fighter: The Game: The Movie - Awful. Utterly horrid.
Double Dragon - Brilliant. I forget the name of the character but the hugely fat guy with the big head..classic
House of the Dead - Uwe Boll shite, complete with scenes from the first two games thrown in.
House of the Dead 2 - Non-Uwe-Boll Shite
Alone in the Dark - Uwe Boll shite where NO-ONE is alone in the dark. Also, invisible lizard creatures and super humans...or something.
Bloodrayne - Should not be paid for, nor watched. Awful.
Dead or Alive - Terrible straight to DVD trash.
Silent Hill - Had promise, ended up comical
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - I actually fell asleep during this in the cinema and had a weird dream I was in the film. While they were driving around in the buggy I had a Gorrilaz song stuck in my head.
Resident Evil 1 and 2 - I didn't like them. Stand out daft moments: Kung Fu kicking a dog, riding through a church window on a motorcycle.
Tomb Raider 1 and 2 - Could have been soooo much better.
Doom - Hilarious, actually quite fun with a few drinks and friends round.

Others?

Was there a Wing Commander game? Or TV Show?
I seem to remember a Tekken film, probably animated.

Interestingly checking out imdb gave: http://www.imdb.com/keyword/based-on-video-game/

and I noticed "Maniac Mansion" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098851/

Dear God... Wing Commander.

It had Chris Roberts producing/directing and it still sucked...
(Since when the fuck was Paladin french?)

At least the animated series had all the original actors from the games reprise their roles.

AitD can be sorta helped. They were suppose to put out a new game based on the movie (franchise reboot)

I dunno about AITD... I just don't think Uwe Boll can produce a good film. Apparently the original script that was submitted to Boll was excellent, a slow moving, tense script. He said it wasn't good enough because it didn't have enough car chases, kung fu and explosions in it. And thus the new Aitd was born.

I also enjoyed Doom, for what it was I should say. Also me and my buddy actually liked the FPS part mainly because it was so spot on. Weird I know.

I kinda liked Doom, but doom (the game) has a very simple premise. Space Marine fights Demons from Hell on Mars.

Movie lacked demons from hell, although at least they did a rewrite so that the Mars and Space Marines were still in. (was even more RE like in early drafts)

...But not for the plot.

It certainly had the atmosphere and tension down pat. And some rad visuals.
And Doom... Cripes... I had to review that movie. Ouch.

OUCH.

on Dead or Alive: I agree it was crap. But if that movie came out when I was 12 years old, it would be number one on my list...for...aesthetic merit?

I have to say... I... enjoyed DOA. I watched it at a friend's house and while it was terrible and cheesy, that's why it was so much damn fun.

It knew it was based off a game series that is a bit of a joke for it's content and it wasn't afraid to hide it. I loved the fact that all the characters were accurate to the tiniest detail to their game versions, even ensuring all clothes worn were avaliable in one of the games and stuff. Sure. it looked ridiculous, but it was like fanwank even though I'm not a huge fan of the series, I'd just laugh and go, "Wow, Zack had that costume in the game."

It was really aware it was based off a game, and it didn't care. Because of that it came across as really whacky and, to me at least, really fun.

Terrible, terrible movie, mind. But fun. Guilty pleasure.

Huh. I was not aware there was a DoA movie, and somehow I completely forgot there was a Doom movie. I honestly think that I had that memory blocked.

Regarding the Final Fantasy movie, though: I realize it wasn't great, but how can you say it was a complete departure from the games? The world has been torn apart by a mystical force and can only be saved by a mysterious girl. A group of heroes escorts this girl to find the nine (I think) "spirits" that are needed to save the world. Not to mention that the entirety of the world's population is crammed into a small crowded city. Sounds like Final Fantasy to me.

Well, FF was a departure from the games. I mean, it just was missing many of the basic Final Fantasy elements. Even making a few references to "Prelude" or "Prologue" (the only tunes in every game except battle fanfare) would've been a nice touch. It sounded like FF on paper but in execution, not.

Adding in a one second glimpse of Chocobos doesn't change that, either.

On one of my site's forums, one of the admins is married to the chief character designer from the movie (now both of them are working Lost Oddesy/Blue Dragon with Sakaguchi) and he says that the feeling amongst the team was that they'd tried their best but the concept just wasn't going to sell to a wider audience. It is (was?) the biggest bomb in movie history. It nearly destroyed Square.

To me, an FF movie can only work if it's a Lord of the Rings style epic. Let's face it, FF and LoTR share the same basic ideas in many places, and really it's just good vs evil. It needs to be a grand, epic production like that. The problem with that is I'd say the characters and general world of FF titles aren't quite mature or detailed enough to transform well into that type of movie. I've always thought FF9 would work well as a 'kid's movie for everyone' on the same level The Lion King and other Disney movies do, as FF9 is very basic but has many layers of interpretation and emotion for older people, too. Same for FF6, really. I remember playing FF6 as a kid, and then again when I was older, and the feeling I got out of it each time was wildly different.
